A kindergartner with type 2 diabetesrecently visited the nurse’s office.* Shetended to his needs and as he walkedout of her office she noticed that hisshoes were untied. She said, “Youbetter tie your shoes so you don’t tripand hurt yourself.” He responded thathe couldn’t tie his shoes. The nurse justthought he had never learned, so shebegan to show him how to make aknot. “I know how to tie my shoes!” hesaid indignantly. And then he loweredhis voice and said,
