Key Points Reading
How I Learned Geography1 A boy and his family left their
country because of war. They lived in a small room. They had no toys or books, and very little food. One night, Father returned home with a map instead of bread. The boy was very angry.
2 The next day, Father hung up the map. The boy began to study the map. He traveled to faraway countries without even leaving the room.
3 The boy saw deserts, beaches, and mountains. He saw temples, fruit groves, and tall buildings. He spent many hours away from his hunger. He understood that his father was right after all.

“How I Learned Geography”Use this passage to practice reading with proper intonation.
It was nearly dark when he came home. He carried
a long roll of paper under his arm.
“I bought a map,” he announced triumphantly.
“Where is the bread?” Mother asked.
“I bought a map,” he said again.
Mother and I said nothing.
“I had enough money to buy only a tiny piece of bread,
and we would still be hungry,” he explained apologetically.
“No supper tonight,” Mother said bitterly. “We’ll have
the map instead.”

Key Points Reading
Extreme Earth1 Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on
Earth. It is 8,850 meters (29,035 feet) above sea level. Plants and animals do not live on the snowy, icy mountain.
2 The Sahara Desert is the world’s largest desert. It only gets 3 inches of rain each year. Summer temperatures are often 90° Fahrenheit. A few plants and animals live here.
3 The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef on Earth. Over time, tiny coral have formed the reef. Many marine animals live on the reef, including fish, turtles, and dolphins.
4 Angel Falls is the world’s tallest waterfall. Water drops 3,212 feet. Millions of years ago, wind and water wore away a plateau. Angel Falls flows over it.

Fluency: Phrasing
“Extreme Earth”Use this passage to practice reading with proper phrasing.
Our next extreme place is under water. It is the Great
Barrier Reef, off the coast of Australia. It is the largest reef on
Earth. It is bigger than New Mexico. In fact, the Great Barrier
Reef is the largest thing ever built by living creatures.
The builders are tiny animals called coral polyps. Each
polyp takes chemicals from the sea. It uses the chemicals to
make a hard outer skeleton shaped like a cup. This cup
protects the polyp’s soft body.
