Sub:- Status of approved Lubricants used on WAP5/WAP7/WAG9 locomotives.

Ref.:- RDSO’s TC No. ELRS/TC/0034 (Rev.’2’) dtd. 28.12.2004.

Referred technical circular regarding lubricants for three-phase electric locomotives was issued in 2004. Since then, changes have been made in respect of approval of lubricants for certain applications and approvals communicated by RDSO from time to time. These have now been consolidated and Revision No. 3 to the Technical Circular has been prepared and enclosed for implementation and guidance.

For unified application on Suspension Tube (NDE) of WAG9 & WAP7 locos and Traction Motors of WAG9, WAP7 and WAP5 locos, trials with indigenous grease have been ordered as indicated in Note 2 of the enclosed table. Till such time final decision is taken after trials, imported grease should continue to be used for these applications.

This revised technical circular supersedes the earlier technical circular referred above.

Sub:- Status of approved Lubricants used on WAG9/WAP5/WAP7 locomotives.

Referred technical circular regarding lubricants for three-phase electric locomotives was issued in 1999 when the contract with M/s. Adtranz / BT was alive and they were fully involved in indigenisation of lubricants or finding alternative lubricants for different applications on three-phase locomotives. Since then, contract period of M/s. BT has been expired, changes have been made in respect of lubricants for certain application (advised separately by RDSO / Adtranz / BT) and a new class of three phase locomotive, WAP7, has come into being.

RDSO has prepared this revised technical circular on the basis of current status of lubricants and feedback received from Railways. Table of currently approved lubricants for various applications on 3-phase locomotives WAG9, WAP5 & WAP7 locomotives is enclosed.

This technical circular supersedes the earlier technical circular referred above.

Note-2: Earlier, Optimol Optigear 220 was approved for WAG9 loco. Vide RDSO’s letter No. EL/3.1.35/8 dtd. 27.02.2002, it has been advised to switchover to Klubersynth GH-6 220 in view of better performance. Several locomotives are, however, presently running with the old type Optimol Optigear 220. CLW/Railways should plan to switchover to the new approved type. In view of incompatibility of Optimol Optigear 220 with Klubersynth GH-6 220, it should be ensured that there shold be no inadvertent intermixing of the two types; for details, RDSO’s letter No. EL/3.1.35/8 dtd. 27.02.2002 may be referred.

Sub: Status of indigenisation of lubricants on WAP5/WAG9 locomotives.

Imported Lubricants as per the recommendations of M/s Adtranz are being used by Railways for different applications on WAP5 and WAG9 locomotives.RDSO has interacted with M/s Adtranz, M/s IOC and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) of equipments/bearings etc. and identified suitable Indian substitute for most of the lubricants. Some of these have been approved by M/s Adtranz. Accordingly, RDSO has prepared three categories of lubricants for use on WAP5/WAG9 locomotives enclosed as three Annexures as under:-

1) Annexure-I – This contains the list of application areas where Indian substitutes have been approved by M/s Adtranz for use on their locomotives. Railways may use these indigenous lubricants against the specified application areas on all WAP5/WAG9 locomotives.

2) Annexure-II- This contains the list of application areas where RDSO has identified Indian substitutes of lubricants in consultation with OEMs/M/s IOC but Adtranz has not yet approved these for use on WAP5/WAG9 locomotives. It has however, been decided that identified indigenous lubricants in this list agains specified application areas may be used in indigenously built locomotives and equipments only and for the imported WAP5/WAG9 locomotives, the original lunbricants as recommended by M/s Adtranz may continue to be used.

3) Annexure- III- This contains the list of application areas when suitable indigenous substitutes of lubricants an yet to be identified. Railway may continue using the original lubricants as recommended by M/s Adtransz for these specified applicatioins on all WAP5/WAG9 locomotives and equipments. Railways are, therefore, requested to take action for using the lubricants for different application areas as given in the above guidelines and report their performance to RDSO from time to time.
