China plays key role in UHD TV boom

2015 is forecast to be a big year for UHD TVs. Advancements in display technologies and panel sizes are expected to spur interest and boost the lines despite its still rather restrictive prices.

DisplaySearch estimated that global UHD TV supply this year will reach 15 million units. This is more than double the January to November 2014 total of 6.4 million.

The consulting firm added that UHD TV shipments started to pick up in the second quarter of 2014 and jumped in the third when the count exceeded 3 million units. This is an astounding 500 percent increase from second quarter figures.

China will be a key contributor to the expected boom in 2015, both as an end-user and volume manufacturer.

From the consumer market standpoint, China is expected to drive growth in the smart UHD TV segment. Consulting company AVC said that by third quarter-2014, 70 percent of flat-screen TVs in China had intelligent functions. An earlier estimate placed the share at 40 percent. China manufacturers, meanwhile, have already joined this particular trend, integrating various OS and smart functions into their new UHD TVs, broadening option for content and apps.

As for new display technologies, big China brands introduced at CES 2015 a slew of advancements geared toward boosting contrast ratio, brightness and display color range.

Haier, for instance, presented its first curved ultrathin LED UHD TV that delivers 3840x2160p. Changhong and TCL launched quantum-dot or QLED 4K TVs

New and upcoming releases will be bigger, brighter and smarter.

Artex Electronics Ltd offers model YKTV1450UHD UHD TV.

The model LE58D8 58in UHD TV is from Kontech Electronics Co. Ltd

The model EN-T550 from Wuhan Enbass Technology Co. Ltd is a 3D UHD TV.

while Hisense introduced its 4K ULED TV.

The table below shows the key features of China-made UHD TVs and how price is determined primarily by the size of their displays.

To address the anticipated jump in demand for large-screen models, TV panel vendors are expanding their selections of bigger displays.

According to the latest LCD TV Value Chain & Insight Report published by DisplaySearch, all of the top TV panel makers have set significant manufacturing targets for large displays. LGE will boost production of 43, 49 and 65in panels. Samsung will increase its output of 40, 48, 55 and 65in models while reducing yield of 32in types.

In mainland China, BOE, ChinaStar and CEC-Panda are shifting focus to bigger panels, specifically those measuring 50 and 55in. Taiwan vendors such as AUO and Innolux are doing the same.

As for key markets, North America and Western Europe

offer the biggest potential for business. The UHD TV retail market in the US was valued at $668 million in 2014, according to DisplaySearch. Seventy percent of consumers there prefer UHD TVs with displays ranging between 55 and 65in. North America sales are forecast to grow 12 percent this year.

UHD TV panel primerOne of the most important parts of UHD TVs is the panel, of which there are two types.

A conventional RGB UHD panel has three red, green and blue subpixels in a single pixel and a total of 24.9 million colors. This type supports a resolution of 3840xRGB(3)x2160p.

Meanwhile, LG and Samsung have developed RGBW, a new four-color pixel technology that adds a white subpixel to the three conventional colors. Samsung’s Green UHD and LG’s G+UHD are examples of this panel type.

Industry insiders, however, consider such variations as “pseudo UHD panels” based on how UHD panels are traditionally described as having three subpixels in a pixel. In contrast, Green UHD has only RG or BW subpixels in one pixel and supports 1920xRGBW(4)x2160p. G+UHD has RGBWR subpixels per two pixels and supports 2880xRGBW(4)x2160p.

Nevertheless, nearly all TV panel makers have a line of RGBW displays, which boast enhanced color range and accuracy.

Moreover, many UHD TV suppliers are adopting RGBW panels to sustain their low-end and midrange selections. This is because the display accounts for about 65 percent of total UHD TV costs and RGBW panels are significantly less expensive than conventional RGB UHD types. A 55in RGBW panel, for example is approximately $470 while its counterpart flat RGB model is about $550. A curved version costs $665.

UHD TVs: The future of television is here

UHD TVs, deemed not mass market-ready just two years ago, are the next big thing for TVs, at least based on what LG, Samsung, Sharp and Sony put on display at CES 2015. Also known as 4K TVs, such units display four times the resolution of 1080p sets and, despite the continuous lack of 4K content, are being promoted as a game changer in 2015.

Analysts agree. KGI Securities estimated that UHD TV shipments in 2014 reached 20 million units, or 8 percent of the global TV market. This number is expected to more than double to 47 million units in 2015, or 18 percent of the projected total market.

Gartner is projecting a jump as well, pegging shipments at about 50 million this year. Further, the research firm expects 4K TVs to make up 57 percent of global television production by 2018.

One reason behind the positive outlook is that while 4K TVs represent a relatively small market, process and technology advances in other TV segments have made UHD TVs significantly less expensive to produce.

According to KGI, the manufacturing cost differential between a ≤42in standard HDTV and 4K TV is now just 10 percent and 20 percent for larger units. The price gap remains significantly wider although average UHD TV quotes are expected to drop to below $2,000 in 2015.

In addition, low-cost mainland China brands are expected to boost 4K TV production and capacity this year. This will be especially apparent in smaller units as most mainland manufacturers focus on the ≤32in segment. Taiwan and South Korea suppliers, on the

4K is increasingly seen to be the standard in the next few years, and content creators and distributors are on board. 4K TV prices are expected to drop while yield is rising.

other hand, emphasize higher-priced, bigger-margin TVs at least 40in in size.

This specialization, and the fact that the largest investment in production has been made, indicates that prices in 2015 will drop significantly without sacrificing margins. This is on the assumption that China manufacturers do not make a marked increase in large-screen output and capacity this year.

4K content: Is there any?Although 4K capability will be built into more LCD and OLED TVs this year, there continues to be limited 4K content available. Moreover, unlike the switch from SD to HD, many viewers will not be able to tell the difference between HD and UHD, especially on smaller screens.

Globally, only a few select channels broadcast in 4K while in the US, the FCC has just started testing the format. In an article about 4K TVs at CES 2015,

TechHive said Comcast plans to launch later this year the Xfinity service in UHD as a Samsung 4K TV app. With it, full seasons of several hit shows will be available for viewing at no charge.

There is hope, however. It was announced recently that the UHD Alliance has been formed by a group of content providers and creators, and hardware manufacturers with the goal of increasing the amount of 4K content available to viewers.

The corporations involved are a who’s who of the entertainment industry, with Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Sharp, Disney, Fox, Warner Bros., Netflix and Dolby aiming to create a “healthy UHD ecosystem.”

Although the Alliance was not formed until late-2014 and was formally announced at CES, it is a positive sign for the 4K TV industry and another potential driver for the technology.

What's in store for UHD TVs?
