Read for 45 minutes. Decide whether you need to read your fiction or nonfiction lens tool. (In blue folder)

Readers, interview someone at home tonight. (ex -mom, dad, grandmother, friend, sister, or brother.) Ask about something that he or she read this week. Listen closely. Think of some good questions to ask the person. See how much you can learn about that person as a reader. Write down (in your reader’s notebook) who you interviewed and what you learned about them as a reader.

Some examples of questions you could ask:

● What kinds of books do you like?

● How do you know if a book is just right for you?

● What do you do when you have to read something you don’t like?

● Looking back on your life, what was one big moment for yourself as a reader? For example, at time when you changed as a reader or you learned about yourself as a

Homework Rubric

reader.

● Who has helped you as a reader? What did that person do that was helpful?

Writing Find the page in this packet labelled “Writing a Story Bit-by-Bit.” Read both version 1 and version 2 of “Escaping the Shot.” (Directions continued on the next page)

Write at least three sentences about what the author in version 2 did that the author in version 1 did not do. Be specific (you can even use lines from the text to explain your ideas).

Reading Read for 45 minutes. Spend at least part of the time reading fiction (take out your fiction lens tool).

Get out your tools

● Reading Notebook, just right book, pencil

In your fiction book, stop at the end of each chapter you read tonight (if your book doesn’t have chapters, stop after a new event happens). Give yourself a comprehension check. Ask yourself all three questions. Write down the answers in your reader's notebook. Make sure to write the date, title of book and page number you stopped.

Readers give themselves a comprehension check

1. Who is in this part?

2. What just happened?

3. Does this fit with something that already happened, or is this new?

If you can’t answer one of these questions because you don’t remember, you might have to reread parts.

Success Criteria:

❏ I read without getting distracted.❏ I labeled my notebook page with an H for home, the date, and the title.❏ I jotted about all three questions above.

Writing In your writer’s notebook, write a story (that’s at least one page) in which you focus on writing in a way that makes a picture in your reader’s mind (just like in version 2 of “Escaping the Shot” from last night’s homework).

Success Criteria:

❏ I wrote the date and an H for home on my notebook page.❏ I wrote more than half a page.❏ I tried something in my writing that I saw in version 2 of “Escaping the Shot”

Math Practice your multiplication facts for at least 10 minutes. (Please write me a note if you were not able to get flashcards. I will print you some).

Complete Tuesday’s home math review. Circle the boxes you needed some help to solve.Social Studies

In your student council packet:

❏ If you would like to run for student council read box A and write your response.❏ If you would not like to run for student council read box B and write your response.

Thursday- Your student council packet is due today. Reminder, walking trip tomorrow!

Reading Read for 45 minutes. Take out your fiction lens tool.

Jot about what you are envisioning. Picture the setting. See the characters. And this

time, picture yourself as the main character. In your mind, can you see what the character sees? Can you feel what the character feels? What do you see happening next? Then, jot in your reader’s notebook what you saw in your mind.

Here’s a way you can start your jot: I’m picturing… because in the text it said….

Hint: Don’t just re-write what happened in the story. Add more details about the picture in your mind.

Example I’m picturing Trisha’s face turning red because she’s embarrassed that the teacher has to tell her all the words. I can hear the other kids laughing in the background. I feel bad for the character because she hasn’t done anything wrong, she just doesn’t understand.

Success Criteria:

❏ I read without getting distracted.❏ I labeled my notebook page with an H for home, the date, and the title.❏ I jotted my own ideas about what I was picturing.

Writing Either start a new story in your writing notebook or finish your entry from school. Make sure each scene (beginning, middle, end) of your story has action (what are the characters doing), dialogue (what are the characters saying) and feeling (What is your character thinking or feeling?).

Success Criteria:

❏ I wrote the date and an H for home on my notebook page. (If you’re continuing an entry from school, put an H next to where you started writing at home)

❏ I wrote more than half a page.❏ Each part of my story has action, dialogue, and feeling.

Math Practice your multiplication facts for at least 10 minutes.

Complete your Thursday home math review. Circle the boxes you needed some help to solve.

Science Look back at the text “Forces All Around”.

What other forces can be found in the illustration on pages 4 and 5?

Force Seen I know this shows a force because...

Reading Get out your tools: Reading Notebook, Just right book, pencil

Read for 45 minutes. Friday’s you can choose any type of text and any type of jot. Once you choose a book decide whether you need to read with a fiction or nonfiction lens. Just make sure what you jot about is your OWN ideas (What is the book making you think about?)

Success Criteria:

❏ I read without getting distracted.❏ I labeled my notebook page with an H for home, the date, and the title.❏ I jotted my own ideas and didn’t just say “This book was about…”

Writing Free write day! You can choose to keep working on the stories we’ve been writing in class, or tonight you’re free to write the genre of your choice (nonfiction, opinion, poem, comic, letter, etc.)

Success Criteria:

❏ I wrote the date and an H for home on my notebook page. (If you’re continuing an entry from school, put an H next to where you started writing at home)

❏ I wrote more than half a page.

Math Practice your multiplication facts for at least 10 minutes.

Create your own word problem that can be solved with subtraction and uses 3-digit numbers. Ex. Mary had 231 stickers in her collection. Sam had 159 stickers in his collection. How many more stickers did Mary have than Sam?
