Greetings of Peace as we approach mid-July and are in the “heat of summer.” How the time flies! I received a recent memo from Fr. Donald P. Oleksiak, our Diocesan Administrator that addresses some “Coronavirus concerns.” In part, Fr. Don says,

“The COVID-19 concerns continue to remain. Recent information released reveals an increase in cases and deaths. As more and more people are relaxing their approach to the virus a spike in cases continues. I am not a scientist nor a medical doctor and do not pretend to know anything about contagions and the spread of disease. I rely on the experts who continuously warn of the dangers of not exercising social distancing and increasing the spread of the virus by failure to wear a mask in public and wash your hands frequently. There is not a day that goes by that I do not receive either an email or letter from one of our parishioners who has an opinion on either side of the argument. I simply urge you to do your best to implement the use of social distancing…parishioners to wear a mask…and model for them yourself…the directives as best as you can. Thank you for your cooperation and efforts to keep our people safe…” As this is being written (on Monday morning, July 6), it appears the requirement for masks will soon be mandated not only in the city of Cleveland but throughout Cuyahoga County (and perhaps other cities, counties, and areas). Again, let’s look out for the safety and well-being of each other as we navigate through the muddy waters of this health crisis. Speaking of “muddy waters,” I am reminded of a “quote” someone shared with me a few years ago. “Our objective is to thoroughly analyze all situations, anticipate all problems prior to their occurrence, have answers for these problems, and move swiftly to solve these problems when called upon. However, when you are surrounded by alligators, it is difficult to remind yourself that your initial objective was to drain the swamp.” There is some humor in this, but also some truth! Let’s smile, stay the course, and do the best we can! Even with this CoVid “stuff” still going on, I hope July has provided an opportunity to take some “down time” from the regular rigors of life. Some love to garden and do outdoor tasks, others like to golf or do outdoor activities. Still others like to travel or relax inside. Whatever your pleasure, enjoy the season! Here in the parish, we are already looking to the “fall,” and the beginning of school, and other parish activities. Wow! We don’t know what “all this” will look like tomorrow, let alone a few weeks or months from now. We are considering alternatives and the implications of “all this.” We will keep you posted when we further plan and receive directives about “best practices” and other possible mandates--in addition to watching out for our “changing times.” Looking ahead, I am scheduled to be away in late July into early August. I plan to leave the parish after morning mass on Tuesday July 28 and will be back for the weekend masses of August 8-9. (This is “slightly extended” from my original plans since I “lost”

2 weeks of vacation time due to our earlier lockdown a few months ago.) I will satisfy any mass intentions that are scheduled and for which I will not be here by celebrating mass when I am away. Additionally, since I will not be here on

Saturday-Sunday, August 1-2, we will not have public mass here that weekend. Finding a priest to cover any parish is becoming more problematic, especially during this pandemic. Since, the dispensation is still in effect and the obligation to attend mass is abrogated, there will not mass here the weekend of August 1-2. Thank you. Again, please make a note that we will not have daily mass (or weekend mass) between July 29 and August 7. I appreciate your faith and your understanding. I will also write reminders in coming “columns” and will “post” this on the doors of the church. If there is the need for a funeral or other emergency while I am way, the priests at our neighboring parishes may assist, as they are able. Thank you, Fathers. Have a blessed week, stay well, and “keep the faith.” Blessings and Peace,

Fr. Gary
