Introduction

The 1553 letters of Cons 488/31 show the development ofFitzgerald’s administration. The early development of the PortGregory area, together with the maintenance and expansion of oldersettlements intersperse with an increasing need for regulations andstaff difficulties.

How to Use the IndexBoth the pages of the letter book and the letters are numbered.

The page numbers range from 1—378, with two additional pages,168a and 355a. The pages are not numbered after 378, althoughcontinuing until 455, and these un-numbered pages and are shownin the Index in italics. The letters are in date order but arenumbered erratically:

1 to 70 638 to 66572 to 87 655 to 69989 to 168 670 to 844

168a 846 to 853169 to 185 856 to 1021187 to 191 1023 to 1288193 to 289 1239 to 1265230 to 244 1267 to 1342305 to 331 1344 to 1349

333 1340 to 1342332 to 355 1344 to 1431

355a 1434 to 1445356 to 636 1449 to 1466.

It can be seen in the above that some letter numbers areduplicated. Consequently:

to find an original letterit is important to

note both the page and the letter number.
