National RunWay Cycling & Skating 2012

On 17 June, personnel from the Army Fitness Centre and SAFSA, together with other 6000 NSmen gathered at the normally out-of-bounds Paya Lebar Air Base to take part in the annual National Runway Cycling and Skating (NRWCS). RSAF claimed the title of the SAFSA NRWCS Champion Formation with 701 personnel taking part in the event! This event was jointly organized by RSAF and SAFRA to promote a healthy lifestyle.

We-Xercise Program &

Roadshow @ MINDEF Canteen

25 July 12, SAFSA held our very first we-Xercise roadshow over at MINDEF Canteen. Customised we-Xercise towels were specially ordered and handed out to interested parties of the program. The response was overwhelming as all 500 towels were handed out within 2 hours. Many DXOs indicated their interest in signing up for the program as well. It was encouraging to know that many DXOs over at Gombak were fitting in their exercise regime amidst their busy work schedule. We look forward to a higher participation rate for the we-Xercise program @ Gombak!

I am proud to report that the MINDEF team stayed above the other 45 teams from various Ministries, retaining the Champion title for Public Service Golf 2012. Special thanks to the "birds catcher" Mr Yong Shao Chang (AMD) , MAJ Koh Hong Soon (HQ UC), MWO Low Kok Chang (NDU) and 2WO Tan Teck Lee (NDU) for their outstanding performance. This year, ME6 Derick Low, who played 77, became the Overall Best Gross player. Mr Yong (78) and MAJ Koh (79) were also amongst the top-5 best gross players. Let’s not forget the other players who contributed in one way or another to the team. Public Service STAR Games (Swimming) Article adapted from ME3 Michael Pang Chung Liang

The public service division organized the Public Service STAR Swimming Meet on 7 July.

Despite facing strong competition from the Singapore Sports Council ( SSC) swim team

that comprised mostly of Philippines’ ex-national swimmers and water polo players,

MINDEF team triumphed the waters with a win as the overall 1st runner up for the

men’s category and 2nd runner up for the women’s category. Victory was especially

sweet as the fighting spirit of the SAF was displayed during the relay events when the

SAFSA team bagged the medals.

It was an honour to be the SAFSA swim team’s manager. Special thanks to Mr Eric Yan

for coaching the team, ME2 Low Pei Lee for assisting the manager ,ME2 Jeffrey Tan for

helping out with the refreshments during the swimming meet as well as the swimmers’

superior for their support given to the SAFSA Swim Team.

To the rest of the swimmers in the swim team, good job!

The Inter Formation Table Tennis Championships 2012 (IFC), organized and hosted by 3rd Div Arty, was held from 19th to 29th June at Amoy Quee Camp's MPH. The guest- of- honour was COL Lawrence Lim. The IFC Table Tennis Competition has always served as a platform to identify potential paddlers to represent SAFSA in the Public Service Games and external competitions organized by the STTA for regulars and NSFs respectively.

Other than that, this competition serves as a gathering for all passionate table tennis players within SAF, promoting the sport and as well as forging new friendships and reigniting old ones. There were many thrilling matches throughout the 3 days of competition. One of which was 3rd Div against RSAF on day 1. The 3rd Div team was spearheaded by the SAFSA OPEN Men Singles Champion, who was undefeated throughout the whole competition.

As the competition entered Day 2, it was evident that RSN and 9th Div were once again going through to the Semi-Finals, coming in the first and second respectively in Group B. While in Group A, MINDEF, RSAF, and 3rd Div were vying to secure a spot in the Semis after TRANSFORMERS topped the group. MINDEF demonstrated why they were the defending champions by producing an upset, shocking 3rd Div, with only 5 players (a minimum full team requires), by posting an overall score of 3:2.

To conclude, this year IFC's Table Tennis proved successful even though it was the first time 3rd Div Artillery hosted and organized the event. The SAF Core Values were demonstrated strongly throughout the entire competition, such as fighting spirit – giving our best till the last point, and professionalism – admitting edge balls and apologizing when the rally is won with luck.

SAFSA Inter Formation Basketball Competition 12/13 (Article contributed by CPT TAN CHYE LEONG, Basketball IFC Convenor 12/13)

After a total of 24 matches over three grueling weeks of competition, the 2012 Inter-Formation Basketball Competition came to an end on 20th July 2012. This year's competition, which was held from 2nd to 20th July 2012,saw the players showcase utmost perseverance and might, demonstrating their passion for the sport. Held at Mandai Hill Camp's Multi-purpose hall, teams displayed the camaraderie amidst the competitive nature of the sport. The guest- of- honour was COMD 2 SIB COL Andrew Lim. This year, CSSCOM provided a fairy tale storyline to the competition. Led by ME4 HO KOK LEONG, CSSCOM triumphed over traditional powerhouse and defending champion RSAF walking away with the title of the Overall Champion. RSAF, 3 DIV and 9 DIV / Infantry also put in great efforts to emerge as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Runners Up respectively. The Inter-Formation Basketball game was an opportunity for military personnel, both NSFs and regulars to put aside their ranks and regimental duties, coming together to engage in the sport they all love. Players from various formations brought with them to the games not only their arsenal of skills and tactics, but also, the values of professionalism and sportsmanship that they carried through to the end.

HQ 3rd Flotilla held its iCare day for the month of June at SAFRA Tampines. The event was held on 27 June 12 and included a sumptuous lunch at SAKURA restaurant, followed by a bowling session at Orchid Bowl. The HQ staff were divided into 2 teams and had a friendly match of bowling to compete for the 2 prizes, Best Individual award and Best Team award.

COM 3FLOT was invited to give away the attractive prizes to the deserving winners. Although not everyone were trained bowlers, the interaction allowed us to exchange tips on how to improve the techniques and skill of the game. All of us had an enjoyable and fruitful day at SAFRA Tampines.
