Our Mission We are a Eucharistic community committed to living the teachings of Jesus. Founded in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, we share the responsibility to build the Reign of God.

Sunday, March 10, 2019 First Sunday in Lent

Liturgy Note: There are 3 options for the Penitential Act in the Roman Missal Third Edition. The first is known as the Confiteor (a Latin word meaning: “I confess”) in which we acknowledge our sins before God and the community and pray for God’s mercy. Within the prayer is the restoration of the triple form of admission of fault, which will be familiar to those who remember the pre-Conciliar liturgy. (“mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa” in English: “through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault”) During this triple admission, the instruction in the Roman Missal indicates: “and, striking their breast, they say:” Whether you strike your breast three times or make the gesture once, the ultimate aim of praying the Confiteor is to humbly acknowledge, to God and to one another, the limitations of our human failings and affirm our need for God’s grace and mercy along with the intercession of the whole Communion of Saints.

Gathering: Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days #479

The Confiteor can be found on the inside cover of the Gather Hymnal.

Psalm 91: Be With Me, Lord #65

The Apostle’s Creed can be found at #175 in the Gather Hymnal.

Universal Prayers:

Celebration of the Eucharist Weekend Saturday Vigil: 5:30 PM

Sunday 9 AM & 11 AM Weekdays: 8:30 AM

Monday Tuesday Wednesday & Friday

Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturday at 4:30 PM or by appointment

Dear Parishioners, This First Sunday of Lent is always an interesting one for me. If you are like I am each year when Lent approaches my mind is filled with a long list of all the things I’m going to do. I’m going to pray more, read the scriptures, be nicer to others, try not to lose my temper so much, give up sweets, no eating in between meals, I should go to mass more often and oh yes I better give more money to the poor. Is your head swirling yet? I know mine is! My Lenten list and expectations far exceed what is humanly possible. My long list all good and noble things sets me up for failure before the first fish fry! This year we are getting back to Lenten Basics and focusing in on the important aspects of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Each week as Lent unfolds you will hear more about these three themes. This first week our focus is on prayer. Each of us approaches prayer in their own unique and comfortable way. For some prayer is formal and memorized, and for others it is as if they are talking to their best friend. I suspect most of us fall somewhere in between doing a little of each when we pray. The one aspect of prayer that is most important and one that I need to do more of is to listen. To be able to quiet my heart and mind enough to actually experience the voice of God deep within. In this world of constant sound and stimulation some quiet would be a great Lenten practice. This year as always we have a number of events that will enhance your Lenten Journey. Please join us for the many opportunities our parish offers this Lent. “Lent is a call to renew a commitment grown dull, perhaps by a life more marked by routine then by reflection.” Sr. Joan Chittister May Our Lenten Journey be a Holy One! God Bless Terry —————————————————————————————————

The Sacrament of Reconciliation Thursday, March 14th at 7 PM

Our celebration will follow the Rite for Communal Celebration of Reconciliation with Individual Confession. Following appropriate time for scripture, examination of conscience, and expression of sorrow, the penitents will be invited to approach the various confessors in procession. They will confess their sins, receive a penance and absolution, and return to their seats. We will conclude with a prayer and a hymn. A number of area priests will be available to assist with our celebration. Please Join us! “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

Stand With Us! Interfaith Prayer Vigil, Thursdays at 4 p.m. For the past several months, people of faith have been gathering for interfaith vigils outside the office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Brooklyn Heights. At these vigils the participants pray, sing, hold silence, lift up prophetic values of justice and compassion, and exhort those in power to work from that set of values. Each week in prayer, they name the reality of families being separated by immigration practices, and pray that God’s intervention, power, grace and comfort enter into these situations of suffering and despair. The weekly vigils started in October 2018 when clergy from more than 25 congregations (and other faith-based groups) gathered at La Sagrada Familia church to share how their

congregations have been (or would like to be) involved in immigrant defense. Leaders and members of Islamic, Jewish, and Christian faith congregations talked about what kind of public presence we might want to do together. The weekly vigils began the following week: to bear witness to inhumane treatment being perpetrated on many immigrant communities, and to hold them in the light of hope. We invite people of faith and conscience to take part in a weekly interfaith prayer vigil outside of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office located at 925 Keynote Circle, Brooklyn Heights. Our goal is to unite and amplify many faith voices calling for compassion and justice to guide the actions of ICE and to bear witness to ICE-imposed injustices and human rights violations taking place in our communities. We welcome non-partisan signage that lifts up values of justice, peace, compassion and hospitality to the immigrant. You can help us to stand up with and for our immigrant neighbors with your “ministry of presence.” Members of the Resurrection Social Justice commission will attend a prayer vigil on Thursday, March 21 at 4 PM. Lisa Frey will lead the service. Join us! For information, contact [email protected].
