Baptism & Baptism Class: Baptisms are held on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. The baptism class for parents is held monthly on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. Please call the Parish Office to pre-register for the next available class. Sacrament of Matrimony: In accordance with the regulations of the Bishop of Arlington, couples must contact a priest and begin preparation at least six months prior to the wedding. Parish registration and active participation for a minimum of three months is required before preparation may begin. Couples who are living together will be asked to live separately during the preparation time as living together before marriage is sinful and harmful to the future marriage.

First Communion: For Children: Generally, First Communion is received when a child is in second grade. Preparation for First Communion is a two year process, and students must complete both first and second grade classes before receiving Holy Communion. Please contact the Religious Education Office with questions. Sacramental Preparation for Adults (RCIA): Adults who wish to receive Baptism, First Communion, and/or Confirmation are invited to attend the Inquiry Class, taught by Father Saunders on Thursday evenings. Please contact the Parish Secretary or visit the website to register.

What does it mean to be an active Catholic? Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, have children baptized, or serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter stating that they are parishioners and active, practicing Catholics. To receive such a letter, one must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to a stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. We encourage all parishioners to become active in one of the parish organizations.

In a community as large as Our Lady of Hope, our most effective means of verifying participation is through the use of parish offertory envelopes or electronic giving, such as Faith Direct. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish, or are unable to contribute at this time, please note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your continued participation, and you will not be noted as "inactive" on our parish roster.

From the Desk of the Pastor

Dear Parishioners,

On that first Christmas, the angels praised God, saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to men of good will.” The shep-herds came and adored the newborn Savior.

In an age where peace and harmony seem so elusive, we take comfort in the gift of Christmas: Jesus, true God who became true man, came to reveal perfectly God’s truth and love to us. He died and rose for our salvation, reconciling us to God and offering us true life. He founded a Church, a family, where His presence continues in both Word and Sacra-ment. Treasure and reflect on the gift of Jesus and the faith you share in Him as a member of the Catholic Church.

When we open our hearts to Jesus and give our love to Him, when we live each day in His presence and follow His truth, and when we share in His mission, then we will know peace in our lives and be His peacemakers in this world. St. Paul taught, “Because you are God’s cho-sen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another; for-give whatever grievances you have against one another. Forgive as the Lord has forgiven you. Over all these virtues put on love, which binds the rest together and makes them perfect. Christ’s peace must reign in your hearts, since as members of the one body you have been called that peace” (Colossians 3:12-15).

As your pastor, I thank you for your dedication, sacrifices, and hard work that enable this parish to be sign of the Lord’s presence in this world and His instrument peace. In particular, I thank those who serve in the various ministries and organizations. On behalf of Father Schierer and all of the staff at Our Lady of Hope, I wish each of you a blessed and joyous Christmas and New Year! Please be assured of my prayers for your intentions and a remembrance at Holy Mass. May the peace, joy, and love of the Holy Family be present in your lives each day of the New Year.

May God bless you, Rev. William P. Saunders, Pastor

Our communities need strong Catholic men to answer the call to lead with faith, protection of families, service to others and to defend our val-ues. For over 100 years, Knights of Columbus have done exactly that, standing up for the Church, serving the least among us, & strength-ening our parishes & families.

Eligible Catholic men can now join the Knights of Columbus online in a simple, streamlined process. As a member, you join a worldwide community of nearly two million men, including almost 30,000 here in Virginia, who stand together. Men have a duty to lead, protect, serve and defend. The world needs more commit-ted, unified Catholic men to answer the call. Will you answer?

Visit kofc.org/joinus to learn more about the many benefits of membership in the Knights of Columbus.

Blessed Are You Among Women

On the First Sunday of Advent we heard about Eliza-beth, the mother of John the Baptist, and Mary, the mother of Jesus. In today’s Gospel (Luke 1:20-45) we hear the story of a time when these two mothers came together. After the angel told Mary that Elizabeth was also expecting a baby, Mary decided to visit her. She had to travel a long way—it took almost a whole week to get to Elizabeth’s house on foot. The map gives you some idea of how far Mary had to walk. It might have been almost a hundred miles!

Elizabeth greeted Mary with words we still pray today in the Hail Mary: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Do you know who Elizabeth was talking about?

Before you go to sleep tonight, pray a Hail Mary. Think about how excited Mary and Elizabeth were when they thought about their babies soon to be born. In two days, we will celebrate that great event when Jesus came to us as a little baby!
