American-Marsh Pumps, one of the oldestpump lines in America, are pump productssteeped in heritage. Since 1873, the American-Marsh line of pumps has withstood the test oftime. During the last 140 years, over 100 vari-eties of pumps have been designed and built. From steam pumps to centrifugal pumps,American-Marsh pumps have been built tomeet the ever changing requirements of society.Over the last century through continuous prod-uct development, more American-Marsh mod-els have been retired than most other pumpmanufacturers have ever produced. Hundredsof thousands of pumps have been made, alldesigned for longevity, allowing many of themto continue servicing customers over 50 years. All of our pumps have three superior charac-

teristics; Design, Performance, and Durability. Our engineering department, which includes anin-house pattern shop, designs each pump sothat installation and maintenance is easy. Ourperformances are engineered to meet or beatthe competition in each category. For 140

140 Years of Pump Manufacturing

years, American-Marsh Pumps products haveprovided cost effective solutions by buildingpumps to last. Durability by design is always themost cost effective solution. From engineeringand design to final assembly, experienced peoplecontrol each step of the manufacturing processwith quality control inspections performed ateach step. All pumps shafts are heat straight-ened. All impellers are computer balanced.Pump testing is done in our new state of the arttest facility. All of these factors ensure youreceive consistent quality product every time.American-Marsh Pumps has provided quality

pump products for over 140 years. AtAmerican-Marsh Pumps, we know that long lifeand superior performance are the keys to satis-fied customers. Casing: The casing is constructed of high tensile caststeel, ductile iron or other specified material. It is of thevolute type, carefully and accurately proportioned topermit smooth flow and to convert high velocity energyof the fluid as it leaves the impeller into pressure.Suction and discharge nozzles are flanged and are castintegral with the volute.OSD & OSG models have cast integral feet standard

and the discharge port is of the vertical centerline type. The casing assembly fully meets ANSI B73.1M dimen-sional requirements. Necessary vent and drain openingscan be provided upon request. OSD Low Flo modelsfeature concentric casings that minimize shaft deflectionand pump vibration.Impeller: The OSD impeller is of the reverse vane,

end suction type, casted in one piece of cast steel orother specified material. Running clearances need toonly be adjusted between the back of the impeller andthe casing adapter. This design allows for repeatable fac-tory tolerances, all of which can be adjusted on thebench, not just in the field. All impellers are hydrauli-cally and dynamically balanced prior to assembly. TheOSG impeller is of the semi-open, end suction type, casted in one piece of ductile iron or other specifiedmaterial. Running clearances need to be adjustedbetween the front of the impeller and the casing. Allmodels meet the stringent performance requirements ofANSI B73.1M. American-Marsh also offers 6 Low-Flow (LF) models to meet difficult low-flow/high-headprocess applications.Shaft: The shaft is of high strength steel or other

specified material, ground to accurate dimensions andpolished to a smooth surface. It is designed for extrastiffness to avoid all critical speeds in operation. OSDpumps lead the industry in low L3/D4 ratio’s minimiz-ing shaft deflection at the stuffing box. All OSD &OSG models guarantee less than 0.002” shaft deflectionat the seal face location, while in operation. As anoption, the shaft can be protected by a shaft sleeve ofample thickness to ensure long life. The shaft sleeve canbe supplied in various materials.Seal Chamber: The OSD pump has seal chambers

available in five (5) different configurations dependingon the jobsite requirement. OSD pumps feature theFlow Modified (FM) seal chamber that keeps solid mat-ter from collecting in the seal chamber causing prema-ture seal failure. The FM bores are available in a smallbore (FMS), a large bore (FML) and a small bore withcast integral gland (FMI), all designed to meet the pro-

cess requirements of the seal industry. OSD models canalso be supplied in a standard Cyclindrical Bore (CB)arrangement. The CB bores are available in a smallbore (CBS) and large bore (CBL) both designed tomeet the process requirements of the seal industry. TheOSG pump has seal chambers available in two (2) dif-ferent configurations depending on the jobsite require-ment. OSG pumps feature the Flow Modified (FM)seal chamber that keeps solid matter from collecting inthe seal chamber causing premature seal failure. TheCB bores are available in a small bore (CBS) designedto meet the process requirements of the seal industry.Seal chambers have provisions for various flush planarrangements customizing the seal chamber to meetthe requirements of the end user. For abrasive applica-tions, packing with a lantern ring can also be supplied.A wide variety of component and cartridge mechanicalseals can be used with OSD & OSG standard compo-nents.Power Frame: The power frame is constructed of

high tensile cast iron and provides support for theinboard and outboard bearings. The outboard bearingis of the double row, angular contact type and theinboard bearing is of the single row, deep groove typefor excellent axial and radial load support. On OSDmodels, axial adjustment of the impeller employs amicrometer adjustment which allows the user to dialback factory tolerances between the impeller and theseal chamber. This re-adjustment of tolerances can bedone on the bench, compensating for proper seal set-ting and eliminating the need to have the casing nearfor final adjustment. On OSG models, axial adjustmentof the impeller employs a micrometer adjustment whichallows the user to dial back factory tolerances betweenthe impeller and the pump casing. Bearing isolatorsensure that contaminents are kept out of the powerframe. For extremely crucial applications, magneticbearing isolators with a poppet breather can be speci-fied, hermetically sealing the power frame. The powerframe has an oversized, integral oil sump that providesoil for lubrication to each bearing. A large one inch oillevel eye is provided standard on the power frame tovisually indicate the oil level. The OSD bearings andshafts are so designed to last up to 61% longer than thecompetition. With OSD shaft deflection indicies sur-passing nearly all of the competition, 43-252% greaterstiffness is achieved resulting in longer Mean TimeBetween Planned Maintenance (MTBPM).

Exclusive reverse vane impeller with balanceholes offers important performanceenhancing maintenance reducingadvantages. Repeatable performance andseal chamber pressures allow repeatableMTBPM cycle.

Front vane, semi-open impeller is fullyinterchangeable with the reverse vaneimpeller. Excellent choice for stringyand certain applications requiring highshear against the casing.

Front vane, Low-Flo, semi-open impellerfor operation at low flow with minimalthrust loads and vibration. Radial loadsare reduced up to 90% and shaft vibrationis reduced up to 50% at low flows.

An impeller cannotbe adjusted to twolocations.

Seal and bearing lifeare reduced due toincreased loads afterwear and mainte-nance adjustment.

Only an AmericanMarsh reverse vaneimpeller offers repeat-able performanceafter wear andimpeller adjustment.

Performance Life Cycle Comparison:

FMLOversized, tapered bore with 8specially shaped and evenly spacedcast-in flow modifiers.Designed for seals with large glandbolt and gasket circles.

• Single internal cartridge seals.• Dual internal/external cartridge seals.• Single internal component seals with flexibly mounted seats.*• Dual internal “true” tandem cartridge seals.Note: Bypass flush to internal seal normally not required. Barrierfluid or external flush may apply to dual seals (Plans 52, 53, etc.)

FMSSame chamber design as FML, butaccommodates seals with small glandbolt and gasket circles.

Same seal and flush plan recommendations as for FML.Single seals with all types of seat mounting configurations can beinstalled.FMS design is provided for the convenience of customers with sealstandards that include small glands. This design is American-Marsh’s secondary recommendation to the FML.*

FMISame chamber design as FMS, butincludes a cast-in integral gland.

• Single internal, flexibly mounted seals. Uses sleeve for sealsetting and fast installation.

• “Sanitary-type” applications. Less prone to bacteria build up.Note: Bypass flush is normally not required.

CBLOversized, cylindrical step boredesign for seals with large glandbolt and gasket circles.

• Dual internal component seals. Isolates the seal chamber fromthe process. Allows less expensive seal materials.Recommended in tough slurry applications.

Note: Use External Flush Plan 54. Others (i.e., Plans 52, 53) notrecommended without close tolerance pumping mechanism.• Single internal component or cartridge seals when applied with

a throat bushing. Usually selected to increase stuffing boxpressure above the vapor pressure to avoid cavitation, etc.

Note: Applied with Plan 11, etc.

CBSCylindrical bore design forpacking arrangements andconventional seals with smallgland bolt and gasket circles.

• Dual internal component seals. Isolates the seal chamber fromthe process. Allows less expensive seal materials. Recommendedin tough slurry applications. Allows for thermal convection typeflush plans; however pumping ring devices are recommended.

Note: Use External Flush Plan 52, 53, 54• Single internal component or cartridge seals when applied with a

throat bushing. Usually selected to increase stuffing boxpressure above the vapor pressure to avoid cavitation, etc.

• Usually preferred over the CBL when jacketing is selected forincreased effectiveness in cooling or heating.

Note: Applied with Plan 11, etc.

All seal selections perform best when the faces are located directly within the flush plan, particularly if solids, liquors, or slurries are present.Component seals with clamped seat gland designs locate the seal faces reasonably well. Flexibly mounted seat glands should include the vent anddrain option to better locate the seal faces. The FML is always the first choice chamber for maximum self-flush path benefits.

SHAFTS

Shafts are available in a wide variety of materialsand are sized for minimal shaft deflection. Solid, composite and hook sleeve configurations areavailable upon request.

American-Marsh Pumps provides the user dependability and durability. bydesigning pumps with upgraded, heavier-duty components. Durability bydesign is always the most cost effective solution.

BEARINGS

OSD ANSI pumps feature oversized, oillubricated bearings designed for long lifeand minimal maintenance. The inboardbearing is of the single row type and theoutboard bearing is of the double rowtype. The power frame utilizes two dou-ble lip oil seals to minimize the entranceof contaminents into the oil. MTBPM isdrastically increased by using larger bear-ings and larger shafts allowing for a small-er shaft deflection index all which extendsseal life.

IMPELLER RING

The impeller is investment castedout of customer specified materialand is of the exclusive reverse vanedesign. All impellers are dynami-cally and hydraulically balanced tomeet ANSI B73.1M performancestandards. Optional semi-openimpellers can be supplied uponrequest.

MECHANICAL SEALS/PACKING

OSD ANSI pumps feature five (5) seal chambers designedto meet extreme services found in today’s applications. FML,FMS, FMI, CBL & CBS seal chambers offer the enduser apump and an engineered seal chamber designed to meet spe-cific fluid and temperature requirements.
