Building a Bridge to Cleaner WaterA bridge is not just an architectural wonder that commands the attention of those who travel over it. It is designed to reconcile different areas and bring them to-gether. A bridge also unites ideas and issues that once may have seemed miles apart and transforms them into something that doesn’t seem so different after all. This notable configuration allows for the overcoming of obstacles that otherwise might be difficult to achieve by one’s own means.Beneath that bridge is one of Earth’s greatest commodities and a major building block of life. The water that travels instinctively towards the ocean acts as a sym-bol of the tremendous efforts and dedication of many people.It is amazing as you begin to understand that it is not just the Environmental Compliance Inspector, who goes out to industries to educate them on the impor-tance of Pretreatment and Pollution Prevention. It is also regulators, district at-torneys, lawyers, laboratory personnel, wastewater operators, collections system operators, and so many others that perform their job day in and day out. Tomás serves as Director of the Water Divi-sion at the EPA in San Francisco. The Water Division, in collaboration with states, tribes, and its many stakeholders, is responsible for safeguarding drinking water in the South-west and for restoring watersheds, oceans, and their aquatic ecosystems to protect hu-man health and support economic and recre-ational activities.

Jim is the General Manager of OCSD. Prior to becoming General Manager, he was Director of Engineering responsi-ble for the District’s biosolids program, environmental compliance, and source control permitting in addition to manag-ing the planning, design, and construc-tion of the District’s $2.6 billion capital improvement program.

Mark formerly served as President of the environmental group Heal the Bay, and was their first employee hired 20 years ago. Mark has worked over the last 20 years in the field of coastal protection and water pollution. He created Heal the Bay’s Beach Report Card, and has authored or co-authored numerous Cal-ifornia coastal protection, water quality and environmental education bills.

Chad grew up on the coast surfing, swimming and fishing, and eventually got his first job as an ocean lifeguard in Laguna Beach. He was appointed as CEO in 2014 after 16 years with the Surfrider Foundation, most recently as Environmental Director. Protecting the envi-ronment needs more than science and gov-ernment – it needs people! Chad oversees a network of 80 chapters, 70 youth clubs, 50 staff, and a number of programs and cam-paigns to protect our coasts for the future.
