A message from Santos
It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the
Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on an inspiring
2012 season.
As an energy pioneer that has been powering
South Australia with natural gas for more
than 40 years, Santos is very pleased to support
an organisation that brings its own brand
of energy to this state.
Our principal partnership with the ASO – now in
its fourteenth year – is a significant part of our
widespread contribution to the South Australian
community.
We are proud to support the ASO because it is
an internationally-renowned orchestra that truly
enriches the community through the talent,
innovation and energy its musicians bring to
every performance.
I am looking forward to the 2012 season, and
hope to see you at Elder Park in February for
the Santos Symphony Under the Stars.

What's new for 2012
We invite you to be inspired by what
you see on the following pages! The
team, led by Chief Conductor and
Music Director Arvo Volmer, has
put together a season of adventures,
inspired by not only the playing
of the Orchestra as a whole, but
by the individuals that contribute
their talents and passion to bring
you the finest music that South
Australia has to offer. Some of
our musicians are profiled in this
brochure, but each and every one of
the 75 full time players provided the
inspiration for the season we offer
you in 2012.
Our Master Series of 12 concerts
in the Adelaide Town Hall is
preluded by an Opening Season
Concert, which includes Berlioz’
Symphonie Fantastique, conducted
by Arvo Volmer and featuring our
concertmaster Natsuko Yoshimoto
as soloist. It will be an event not to
be missed and will set the scene
for the stunning array of concerts,
guest artists and inspirational
moments that will follow
throughout the Master Series.
Much has been made of the
complete Mahler Symphony Cycle
that the Orchestra has been
performing over a number of years,
with Arvo at the helm. In 2012, we
bring you Das Lied von der Erde and
Symphony No 7.
New events on our calendar
include two concerts at St Peter’s
Cathedral in North Adelaide:
Górecki's Symphony No 3 with
Greta Bradman, and Tavener’s
The Protecting Veil. You will be
inspired by the fine string playing
in both of these works, in the
intimate setting of the Cathedral.
We do not try to be all things to
all people, but respond to the
requests for the excellent Adelaide
Symphony Orchestra to entertain in
a variety of programs, for differing
and wide ranging audiences. We
are delighted to present Sir Michael
Parkinson, The King’s Singers, and
Beatles-inspired concerts, and two
audio-visual spectaculars, The Lord
of the Rings: The Fellowship of the
Ring and Distant Worlds: Music from
Final Fantasy, to not only regular
attenders, but to people who might
be attending for the very first time.
To you we say “Welcome – come
and enjoy!” And there’s even
more inspired enjoyment in our
Last Night of the Proms (with an
Aussie flavour), and a concert to
commemorate the sinking of the
Titanic 100 years ago.
Learning at the ASO continues
to be a focus as we look to inspire
young and not-so-young through
programs that introduce fine music
in a meaningful way. The brochure
includes just some of the many
activities we have planned for the
year, and will be updated by notices
on our website and in the ASO's
Learning brochure.
We acknowledge our partners
that assist us with funding and
sponsorship, and whose people
inspire us through our everyday
interactions. They remind us that
we are part of a larger community,
all working to improve enjoyment in
South Australians' lives. We thank
Principal Partner Santos, Arts SA
and the Australia Council.
Partnerships and collaborations
continue to be important to the ASO
and we take pride that our excellent
musicians underpin much of what
goes on in the cultural community:
State Opera of South Australia;
Adelaide Festival; The Australian
Ballet; and our newly collaborative
recitals with Recitals Australia
and the International Piano Series.
We are particularly excited about
the Tan Dun Martial Arts Trilogy
Australian Premiere and Exclusive
that we are co-producing with the
Adelaide Festival Centre as part of
the OzAsia Festival.
But the real inspiration for 2012
are our musicians. This group of 75
highly talented players who work
together harmoniously to bring you
exceptional concerts each and every
time. They inspire us every day. We
hope you will enjoy their stories,
hear their music, and Be Inspired …
Barbara George
Chief Executive

artistic inspiration
I am delighted to present the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s 2012 season to you. It is a season inspired by great music,
fine artists, and, of course, our city’s wonderful Orchestra.
Woven through our Master Series concerts is a complete cycle of Tchaikovsky’s concertos, some glorious orchestral
music inspired by heroes – and even anti-heroes – and several premieres of new music. A highlight is an opportunity
to catch the Australian premiere of one of our country’s leading composers, Brett Dean, as he conducts his major new
orchestral work – Fire Music.
But for me, it is the ASO which provides so much inspiration. It is through their fine playing and their keen attention
to detail that they become the magnificent instrument through which I am able to bring to life the works of the
greatest composers, including, of course, the music of Gustav Mahler.
Over the years, I have been asked “why Mahler?” To understand ‘why Mahler?’ I quote the composer in
conversation with another great composer, Jean Sibelius: “the symphony must be like the world, it must
contain everything”. I believe Mahler deals with the problems of our modern world; he asks the questions and,
provides many answers.
As a musician, Mahler intrigues me. He writes symphonies which contain an unprecedented combination of simple
clarity and awesome complexity. Mahler’s art is like a huge naive fresco which contains thousands of characters
and tiny details, yet, stand back and look - it tells a single story. There are no limits to the endless possibilities of
interpreting this music and one must find his or her own key to its secrets. For me, it is the universal and spiritual
experience that is important – something that you, our expectant listener, will enjoy and cherish.
As Chief Conductor and Music Director, to perform all the Mahler symphonies with the ASO is a great adventure, a
voyage of discovery. In 2012 I hope that you will join us on our journey for two special performances of two late Mahler
symphonies: the composer’s poignant farewell, Das Lied von der Erde and the beautiful, ghostly epic Seventh Symphony.
Enjoy the ASO’s 2012 season and I look forward to welcoming you to our concerts.

Natsuko Yoshimoto, Concertmaster
Natsuko began her journey towards
becoming the ASO’s Concertmaster at the
Yehudi Menuhin School when she was 11.
She went on to further studies at the Curtis
Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Royal
Northern College of Music in Manchester. She
arrived in Australia in 2001 and has performed
extensively with orchestras and chamber
groups both locally and nationally.

Gemma Phillips, Cello & Emma Perkins, Violin
Emma and Gemma have shared many memories over the
years. Best friends since high school, they went on to study
in Adelaide and were part of the AYO before performing with
the ASO close to a decade ago. Amongst some of their best
memories include backpacking around Europe together and
Emma’s wedding, where Gemma was maid of honour.
Emma & Gemma’s inspirational moment
We both admired players in the ASO when we were younger
and thought how great it would be to be part of that one day.
For both of us, our passion for music has evolved – we couldn’t
imagine doing anything else.

Second generation ASO musicians, Lachlan and Ewen are brothers whose parents met in the ASO, so you could

Peter Jackson’s fi lm as an immense symphonic

Shore’s score not only captures Fellowship’s sweeping
emotion, thrilling vistas and grand journeys, but also
echoes the very construction of Tolkien’s Middle-
Earth. Styles, instruments and performers collected
from around the world provide each of Tolkien’s
cultures with a unique musical imprint. In operatic
fashion, these musical worlds commingle, sometimes
combining forces for a culminated power, other times
violently clashing…and always bending to the will of
the One Ring and its own ominous family of themes.
Says Howard Shore, ‘My fi rst score for The Lord of

beginning of my journey into the world of Tolkien
and I will always hold a special fondness for the
music and the experience.’

Carolyn Mooz, Viola & Juris Ezergailis, Principal Viola
Juris joined the Orchestra in 1975 and Carolyn,
originally from America, moved here from
Switzerland in 1998 after winning the audition
for the ASO in London.
Now, husband and wife, both started as violin
players but later turned to the viola, which
Carolyn says, was love at first stroke!
As a young student Juris was always exposed
to great live music and Carolyn was so taken
by a performance by the San Francisco
Symphony she just knew she had to be
a musician.
Their most inspirational moment
When the Orchestra was ushered onto the
stage at the Festival Theatre after hours in the
pit performing our first Ring cycle. The curtain
rose to reveal the sold-out auditorium all on
their feet, cheering the blood, sweat and tears
of the past month's and indeed the past week's
performances.

Ian Denbigh, Trombone & Sarah Denbigh, Cello
Although Ian and Sarah attended National Music Camp together as students, they didn’t know it until much later
when they met, and later married, playing with the ASO.
Ian and Sarah followed quite different paths into music. Sarah followed the progression from State Music Camps
to AYO and Ian started his music career in brass bands.
Both really enjoy contemporary works and new collaborations with the opera. Sarah jokes that she has the more
difficult role - there are a lot more notes to learn as a string player – but the brass gets to stand first for the applause!
Sarah’s most inspirational moment
After seeing the top orchestra play Dvo ák’s New World Symphony at State music camp I thought, wow, I wonder will
I ever be good enough to play at that level.
Ian’s most inspirational moment
I really liked the music that introduced ABC FM simulcasts in the 1980’s. It was the Rondo from Mahler’s Symphony
No 7 in 1984. I was then fortunate enough to hear this piece conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic
in the Musikverein. I am very excited to finally have a chance to play this great work in 2012.

Chris Handley, Cello & Sherrilyn Handley, Cello
Chris and Sherri, as husband and wife, share a passion for music and have
both always played the cello. Both heard, early in their career, the great
Mstislav Rostropovich, whose incredible energy and sublime tone qualities
have inspired probably every cellist. And Chris recalls an instant connection
with the instrument’s beautiful sound.
Chris’ inspirational moment
Orchestral music has by far the largest and widest range of magical moments,
and playing in a great orchestra like the ASO, surrounded by superb
musicians, is the best way to experience many of them. Inspiration can come
from a fleeting moment in an opera or from a long movement in a Mahler
Symphony. There are too many to name.
Sherri’s inspirational moment
I think really the one moment which made me decide to be a cellist was
when I heard a recording of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No 1 played by
Rostropovich in a school music class in year 10. I just knew that I had to play
it and no matter how many hours of practise it took, that was what I wanted
to do.

Supporting your ASOGreat cities have great orchestras
and, being no exception, the Adelaide
Symphony Orchestra is acclaimed
nationally and internationally for its
quality performances and outstanding
recordings. To continue its high standard
of concerts and diversity of repertoire the
ASO needs your help.
Each year, we rely upon the difference
that you, as a private individual, can
make to ensure that we can continue to
deliver performances that inspire, thrill
and engage, in a variety of genres to suit
the various appetites of our concertgoers.
We, in turn, are inspired by the feedback
we receive from the South Australian
community – the people in hospital,
the children in schools, the first-time
concertgoer, and our loyal subscribers.
Your donation helps us to not only
present concerts in the Adelaide Town
Hall and Festival Theatre, but to go
into schools, libraries, the Mary Potter
Hospice, and the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
We are currently striving to build one of
the strongest, most innovative learning
and outreach projects in Australia
which aims to reach people of all ages
through creative programming and new
technologies. Your generosity is much-
needed to help the ASO continue to
provide and develop great free and low
cost programs which engage our young
audience and, most importantly, help us
to build new audiences of the future.
There are many ways to donate to the
ASO and specific programs to donate
to. For example, you could make an
annual donation or a long term pledge
commitment; give a significant gift, or
a bequest to secure the ASO’s future.
Our new program, Musical Chairs,
allows you to sponsor a musician and
get to learn more about what inspires
them. Opportunities range from
$2,500 to $5,000.
To discuss specific donation programs,
please contact the ASO’s Director
of Development, Vicky Lekis on
(08) 8233 6260 or [email protected],
or simply donate on your booking
form in this brochure. Gifts over $2
are tax deductible, and all sums over
$250 are acknowledged in our Master
Series Concert Program books.

Jackie Hansen, Principal Contra Bassoon & Dean Newcomb, Principal Clarinet
Dean and Jackie first met in 2006 when studying together at the Australian National
Academy of Music in Melbourne. Work opportunities then took them in different
directions; Dean to Macau and Jackie to Brisbane, and by chance they won their jobs in
the same orchestra within 3 months of each other. They became permanent members
of ASO in 2009.
Jackie's inspirational moment
One of the best things about pursuing a career in music is that you never know where it
will take you. An orchestra tour to Denmark and Sweden in high school inspired me to
do this for a living.
Dean's inspirational moment
I have always been inspired by the music making in my family. My mother taught us all
from an early age and being the youngest of four, I was lucky enough to be immersed in
their passion for music, from opera and classical to jazz and improvisation.

Julie Newman, Violin & Jennifer Newman, Violin
Twins Jenny and Julie know a lot about working as a team.
Growing up, they did most things together – they were in the
same classes at school, dressed the same, joined the Army
Reserves together, attended the Eastman School of Music in
New York and Tanglewood in Massachusetts. Knowing that they
wanted to become professional musicians was also a mutual
decision and neither has looked back since, both playing with
the ASO for the last 35 years.
Julie and Jenny’s inspirational moment
It was after a great experience at a music camp when we were 14
years old that we knew music was what we wanted to do. We still
remember arriving home and telling our parents that we wanted
to play in an orchestra.

There’s big – and then there’s Bernstein. From West Side
Story to Candide, celebrated Broadway and classical
composer Leonard Bernstein knew how to make a big
song and dance.
Bernstein regarded Mass, a kaleidoscopic mix of music,
dance and theatre featuring a symphony orchestra, a rock
band, a choir, opera singers and even a marching band,
as his defi ning achievement.
Commissioned for the opening of the Kennedy Center
in 1970, Mass features a small village of performers and
a supremely charismatic lead in the ‘Celebrant’, performed
by the great US gospel singer Jubilant Sykes.
The spectacle of Mass is underpinned by a profound
statement of human faith that is explosive, cathartic
and ultimately uplifting.
