Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out “two by two” to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. St. James the Apostle, sometimes referred to as St. James son of Zebedee or St. James the Greater in order to distinguish him from James son of Alphaeus and James the

brother of Jesus, was one of the Twelve Apostles, and by tradition, he is considered the first Apostle to be martyred. He is the brother (probably older) of St. John the Evangelist. One of the first followers to join Jesus, James is thought to have been the eldest son from a family of relatively wealthy but uneducated fishermen. Legend suggests he had a fiery temper and a direct, impulsive nature—which possibly lead to his execution by sword ordered by Herrod the King, in about 44 CE. He is the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament.

BAUTISMOS / BAPTISMS

The American Revolution cleared the way for freedom of religion in the former colonies, since the colonies had always been a more religiously tolerant place than the old country. Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1790. Within twenty years the community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. Today, our original American convent is fully alive in prayer, hard work, and strong community. Rev. J. Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Inc

Reflexión Semanal del Padre Isnard

Apreciados Hermanos y Hermanas,

,

Padre Isnardo

Weekly Reflection from Father Isnardo

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Sometimes an idea or concept from the scripture readings comes across very clearly in the Lectionary, and that is certainly the case this Sunday. The image of a shepherd runs through the first reading from the prophet Jeremiah, the responsorial Psalm, and the Gospel as well. The shepherd is probably one of the most common biblical images, being known even to people with only a passing familiarity with the Bible. In addition, in John’s Gospel, Jesus famously calls himself the “Good Shepherd,” which we hear today and which is the most popular of all the Psalms, begins with the words “The Lord is my shepherd.” Reflecting on this peaceful image, it is important to recall in the first place that the image of a shepherd was used so often in the Bible because practically everyone in the ancient near east encountered shepherds on a regular basis. Shepherds developed remarkably close bonds with their sheep, to the point where sheep distinguished between the voice of their shepherd and that of another, such as a thief. The shepherd thus became a powerful biblical symbol representing the Lord, who guided the whole nation of Israel and sought the best for them even though they often rebelled against their shepherd. The Lord was a faithful shepherd for his people, but the earthly kings and rulers who reigned over Israel were not, as we clearly hear today: “thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who shepherd my people: You have scattered my sheep and driven them away. You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds”. Jeremiah not only announces the Lord’s judgement against the “shepherds” of Israel, he also provides a note of great hope, when, speaking in the name of God, he says: “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which I have banished them and bring them back to their folds; there they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they no longer need to fear or be terrified; none shall be missing”. The prophet Jeremiah’s inspired words would be partially fulfilled when the people of Israel were led from their exile in Babylon back to their homeland by leaders who were truly righteous and devoted to the Lord. The full meaning of his prophecy would not be seen however, until the time of Jesus himself, more than five centuries after the exile, when he revealed himself to be the true and definitive shepherd of Israel and of all the nations. We see evidence of that in today’s Gospel reading: Jesus is greeted by a huge crowd—more than five thousand people—and he sees that they were downtrodden spiritually and physically, “like sheep without a shepherd.” He responds by giving them two things that a good shepherd provides to his sheep: instruction and sustenance. Just as a shepherd carefully guides his sheep so as to avoid danger, so too Jesus turned to the crowd and “began to teach them many things” that they might avoid spiritual danger and come to find eternal life in him . A shepherd also provides grazing for his sheep, and Jesus provides a miraculous abundance of food for the crowd, beginning with just five loaves and two fish . As we recall the image of the shepherd found so often in the Bible, let us be grateful that in Jesus we have found the one true “shepherd

and guardian of our souls” . Father Isnardo

Do you feel like you are missing something in life? Could it be that God does not take up much of your time? Do you want to fill that hole where only God can reside? Come to the Prayer and Life Workshops! Everyone is welcome! There are no prerequisites except that you are seeking the face of God. By means of a woven pattern of intensive prayer, community reflection, meditations on the Word, and silencing exercises, the participants of the workshops slowly become filled with a peace that surpasses all understanding. Result? We become more like Jesus, sensitive and merciful, unconcerned with himself and concerned about others. There are 15 sessions of workshops, each session lasting for two hours, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, beginning Monday, July 30 (Introductory Session), in Room 3, Materials fee of only $12 (no registration fee and scholarships are available). For information, contact Eileen Beresford at 916-806-7980.

O what consolation, what sweetness, what confidence, what emotion fill my soul when I pronounce thy sacred name, or even only think of thee. I thank God for having given thee, for my good, so sweet, so powerful, so lovely a name. But I will not be content with merely pronouncing thy name: let my love for thee prompt me ever to hail thee, Mother of Perpetual Help. 5
