LIGHT “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14). We are at the midpoint of our Lenten journey of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep” along the road to conversion. The most powerful stories of conversion are proclaimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake us out of our sleep. Today’s Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind exposes the real blindness in the me of Christ—the blindness of the self-righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks, at the Easter Vigil, the Church will proclaim “Christ our Light” as the paschal candle is carried into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that s ll pervades our lives, communi es, and world, be dispelled by the Christ who comes to bring sight to the blind and light to the world.

We pray for our sick parishioners, family and friends and those in need of healing of the body and soul.

LUZ “Despierta, tú que duermes; levántate de entre los muertos y Cristo será tu luz” (Efesios 5:14). Estamos a medio camino en la jornada de Cuaresma para la conversión. Como siempre, Dios no se da por vencido con nosotros, especialmente con aquellos que “duermen” en el camino a la conversión. Los más grandes relatos de conversión se proclaman en estas semanas finales de la Cuaresma. Estos enen el poder de sacudirnos de nuestro sueño. El relato del Evangelio de hoy sobre la curación del ciego de

nacimiento expone la verdadera ceguera en empos de Cristo –la ceguera de los líderes religiosos que se creían muy buenos y justos. Dentro de pocas semanas, en la Vigilia Pascual, la Iglesia proclamará a “Cristo nuestra Luz” cuando el Cirio Pascual es llevado dentro de las iglesias oscuras de todo el mundo. Que la oscuridad del pecado que impregna nuestra vida, comunidades y nuestro mundo sea disipada por Cristo quien viene trayendo vista al ciego y luz al mundo.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT / CUARTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA

Our Lenten journey con nues this Sunday as we hear of Jesus healing a blind man in the Gospel of John. Jesus proclaims himself the light of the world, a light that overcomes darkness and enables a new capacity to see. The man, blind from birth, was able to begin his path to sight by first acknowledging his blindness. We are reminded of God’s ongoing invita on to us to journey from blindness to sight. We begin by acknowledging our own capacity for “blind spots,” and so open ourselves to uncomfortable truths and to God’s healing. We are invited to see beyond appearances, as the reading from Samuel indicates, and to look into the heart of things. We are invited to “live as children of light” as the le er to the Ephesians teaches. Like the man healed from blindness, we may gradually learn to see fully and to follow Jesus. HEALING FOR COMMUNITY It is helpful to observe that our Gospel passage from John, the healing of the blind man, is the first part of a longer episode. When Jesus’ words end Chapter 9 in today’s passage, he goes on speaking in the discourse on the Good Shepherd in Chapter 10. The healing of the blind man was not only a demonstra on of God’s power, giving him the physical capacity of sight. It was even more than the awakening of the man’s personal faith in Jesus. The image of the Good Shepherd confirms that the man was liberated from the social isola on of his blindness and became a member of Jesus’ flock. All of Jesus’ powerful ac ons of healing were intended as gi s, not only to individuals, but for the building up of the community of faith.

HUMILITY AND ACTION “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance, but the LORD looks into the heart.” In our first reading, Samuel draws conclusions about who God will choose as king based on his assump ons of what a proper king looks like. But God sees a deeper reality. How easy it is to miss our own blindness. How frequently we are unaware of our own flawed assump ons about others and about ourselves. We o en need a deeper humility about the limita ons of our percep ons and our convic ons. Yet, as the le er to the Ephesians encourages, there are mes to expose the “fruitless works of darkness”, to speak out, especially when persons or groups are suffering from abuse or oppression. We are called to live within a tension that these scripture passages convey. We are to seek God’s guidance in prayer with genuine openness. We are then to speak and act forcefully against wrongdoing, even as we maintain humility about how much we know, or what is the best ac on to take. We are called to bring God’s wisdom and mercy to all.

Nuestro viaje cuaresmal con núa este domingo mientras escuchamos de Jesús sanando a un ciego en el Evangelio de Juan. Jesús se proclama la luz del mundo, una luz que vence la oscuridad y permite una nueva capacidad de ver. El hombre, ciego de nacimiento, pudo comenzar su camino con su vista al reconocer primero su ceguera. Se nos recuerda la invitación con nua de Dios para que viajemos de la ceguera a la vista. HUMILDAD Y ACCIÓN “La mirada de Dios no es como la del hombre: el hombre ve la apariencia, pero el Señor ve el corazón.” En nuestra primera lectura, Samuel saca conclusiones acerca de quién Dios elegirá como rey basada en sus asunciones de cómo será un rey apropiado. Pero Dios ve una realidad más profunda. Que tan fácil es pasar por alto nuestra propia ceguera. Que tan frecuentemente estamos ignorantes de los errores de nuestras asunciones acerca de los demás y de nosotros mismos. A menudo necesitamos una humildad más profunda acerca de las limitaciones de nuestras percepciones y nuestras convicciones. Sin embargo, como la carta a los efesios nos anima, hay veces que exponemos los “inú les trabajos de la oscuridad” para hablar, especialmente cuando las personas o grupos están sufriendo a causa del abuso o la opresión. My dear St. Lawrence Family, It is with sadness in my heart, but confident trust in God that I make the following announcement. By order of the Most Rev. Jaime Soto the celebration of public mass in the Diocese of Sacramento has been suspended. This means we will not be having any masses at St. Lawrence until further notice. Because of this, the general dispensation for the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains in place until further notice. While the public celebration of Mass is suspended, rest assured that I, and my brother priests, will still be celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. And although you cannot physically be present for these masses, we encourage you to find other ways to journey with our Lord in this time – watch the mass online or on TV, read scripture, practice certain prayer devotions, serve others (those who can), build up your relationship with others. Also, we are currently looking at ways that the parish will be able to continue providing for your pastoral and spiritual needs. Until further notice: • The church will be open for private prayer 8a – 9a, Mon – Fri, and I

will hear confessions during this time when available. • Individual appointments for Confession may be scheduled through

the parish office – 916.332.4777 • We are looking at having the church opened on Sundays as well,

and more times for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (schedule to follow)

Let me finish by sharing these words from Bishop Soto: “Though this moment may not be how we imagine Lent heed the words of Saint Paul to the Corinthians ‘Behold now is a very acceptable time; behold now is the day of salvation. ‘Let us practice the evangelical qualities of patience, prudence, gratitude, and joy. Pray that the Lord may grant us the clarity of faith to see the wise and merciful hands of the Divine Potter tenderly molding us into the image and likeness of his son, Jesus. May our blessed mother Mary stand together with us in the shadow of her Son’s cross that we might come to know the joy of his glorious Resurrection…”

St. Lawrence Church Update 3/21/2020

A er some prayerful discernment, we have decided to open up the church for private prayer on weekday mornings (M-F) and Saturday a ernoons un l sunset. On Sunday mornings as weather permits, we will have Exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament outside at the Gro o. You can visit with our Lord in prayer - and you can even pray in his presence without ge ng out of your car. When possible, Fr. Raj will be available throughout these

mes for confessions - you can s ll always schedule a confession through the parish office. Please maintain social distancing at all mes, or we may be forced to shutdown any or all of these opportuni es to pray. The Gro o will remain available throughout the day for anyone who wants to walk, pray, or do the Sta ons of the Cross. For those who would like to drop off your dona ons/offerings, we would ask you to drop it off in our safe drop-box, there are signs in the church. We are also looking into online giving opportuni es which we will make available soon. Thank you so much for your con nued generosity.

Aviso Nuevo de la Iglesia de San Lorenzo 3/21/2020

Después de un discernimiento en oración, hemos discernido abrir la iglesia para la oración privada en las mañanas de lunes a viernes y los sábados por la tarde. Los domingos por la mañana, si el clima lo permite, tendremos la Exposición del San simo Sacramento afuera en la Gruta. Te invitamos a visitar a nuestro Señor, incluso puedes orar en su presencia sin salir de tu automóvil. Cuando sea posible, el P. Raj estará disponible a lo largo de estos empos para confesiones; todavía puede programar una confesión a través de la oficina parroquial. Mantenga el distancia personal en todo momento, o podemos vernos obligados a parar estas oportunidades para rezar. La Gruta permanecerá disponible durante todo el día para cualquiera que quiera caminar, rezar o hacer las Estaciones de la Cruz. Para aquellos que desean dejar sus donaciones/ofrendas, les pedimos que lo dejen en nuestro caja fuerte, hay instruc-ciones en la iglesia. MISSION STATEMENT To support one another as a family by ensuring the physical and spiritual wellbeing of individuals and families of St. Lawrence Parish during this quaran ne period through regular (distanced) human interac on and facilita ng any needs that arise. WHO SHOULD VOLUNTEER Individuals or families who aren’t members of the vulnerable popula on or do not reside with anyone who is in the vulnerable popula on. And those who can easily pick-up/deliver groceries/supplies/medica on if need be. RESPONSIBILITIES OF VOLUNTEERS Call those in your cluster a few mes a week - minimum once. Pray for them daily - maybe develop a common prayer me or devo on you will share in, etc. Communicate to Fr. Raj if they need the Anoin ng of the Sick or Confession Check if they have any pressing needs, such as medica on and groceries etc. - Do they need assistance ge ng supplies? Do they need other assistance, coordinate with SVDP. PROCESS √Our staff will call parishioners on-file, and assess which parishioners would be interested in ge ng some support/being connected in a cluster. √Once you sign-up to volunteer for the Support Program, you will be contacted by one of our staff and assigned a few members of the community to check-in on regularly. √The staff member will email you their contact informa on. Letter from Father Raj—3.23.2020 My Dear St. Lawrence Family, May the Peace and Love of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. It goes without saying, but we know that we find ourselves in a challenging and unprecedented moment in history. While we learn how to manage this all as a society, and even though this may be a disheartening time, I wanted to assure you of my support and prayers, and encourage you all to remain hopeful. And while the challenges we shall face as a parish family are unique (an inability to share in public Mass together, the suspen-sion of Religious Education classes, the lack of opportunities to share in community and service together), as Christians, we are called to face such challenges in a unique way. We Hope. We trust in God. We find Joy even amidst the suffering. As St. Paul reminded us in our Second Reading yesterday: “Live as Children of Light.” Be assured that even in these strange and challenging times our parish staff and leadership are working hard to assist you in living as children of the light. If you have questions, call us. If you have any spiritual or material needs, let us know. If you need to schedule an appointment for confession, you can schedule an appointment through the Parish office at 916.332.4777 Additionally, I wanted to inform you about these specific opportunities for prayer and connection with God here at St. Lawrence: ● The Church will be Open for Private Prayer on Weekday mornings (M-F) from about 8am to 11am, Saturdays from about 8am to sunset, and Sunday mornings from about 8am to 3pm. ● When weather permits, we will have Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament outdoor at the Grotto on Sundays from 8am to Noon. (Please maintain social distancing). ● Confessions will be available via appointment and on Saturdays at 4pm. You may also request me to hear your confession if you see me walking around on Sunday mornings. ● The Grotto will remain open throughout each day for walking, praying, and the Stations of the Cross. Regarding the Sunday Mass, starting this week you will be able to watch a livestream of my Mass for the People (Misa pro populo) on Sun-day at 7am (Bilingual), and then the recording will remain available for anyone to view and use for prayer at a later time. This will be available at our facebook page: fb.com/StLawrenceNH . This mass is offered for all the intentions of the Parishioners of St. Lawrence, and so if you have particular intentions you would like me to pray for, you can write them down and place them in the basket provided at the entrance of the Church. I am also planning on doing a livestream of the celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary this coming Wednesday (3/25) at 11am. Because of a few challenges, we won’t be livestreaming the Daily Mass, but I encourage you to check out our website for other links where you can watch the Daily Mass online. Also, please be aware that our Parish Office is currently closed to the public until further notice, but you can still call 916.332.4777 for assistance M-F 9:30am to 4:30pm. Although the printing of our parish bulletin will be discontinued for the time being, you can check out a digital version, as well as other info and updates at our parish website: SaintLawrenceChurch.org. Carta de P. Raj—3.23.2020 Mi querida familia de San Lorenzo, Que la paz y el amor de nuestro Señor Jesucristo estén con todos ustedes. No hace falta decirlo, pero sabemos que nos encontramos en un momento desafiante y sin precedentes en la historia. Mientras aprendemos cómo manejar todo esto como sociedad, y aunque puede ser un momento desalentador, quería asegurarles mi apoyo y oraciones, y alentarlos a todos a mantener la esperanza. Y aunque los desafíos que enfrentaremos como familia parroquial son únicos (la incapacidad de compartir juntos la Misa pública, la suspensión de las clases de Educación Religiosa, la falta de oportunidades para compartir juntos la comunidad y el servicio), como cristianos, estamos llamados a enfrentar tales desafíos de una manera única. Esperamos. Confiamos en Dios. Encontramos alegría incluso en medio del sufrimiento. Como San Pablo nos recordó ayer en nuestra segunda lectura: "Vivan como hijos de la luz".
