Istanbul is one of the most elegant cities in the world, famous for its historical monuments and magnificent scenic beauties. It lies at a point where Asia and Europe are separated by the narrow strait of the Bosphorus. The city has been the capital of three great empires; Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. Surrounded by Roman city walls and stretched over seven hills, Istanbul is adorned by the masterpieces of Turkish Art and the great mosques of the Sultans that crown the hills. Istanbul has always been a city of tolerance where mosques, churches and synagogues exist side by side. Whether you go cruising on the Bosphorus, devour the delicacy of fish on the shore, relax with a cup of Turkish coffee and shop in the historical Grand Bazaar, the experiences will be unforgettable.

Gallipoli is a particularly important site for Australians to visit. It is a chance to view the battleground of the Diggers who were engaged in the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I. Gallipoli is now a National Park with many monuments dedicated to the 500,000 Australian and Turkish casualties.

The battle at Gallipoli is uniquely placed in world conflicts: it is known as the ‘friendly war’ – if there is such a thing possible. In the many months of fighting, the soldiers occasionally stopped fighting during Christmas and Ramazan (Muslim holiday). During this time the soldiers would exchange cigarettes and talk. However, inevitably fighting would re-commence with the young soldiers forced to go back into battle and fight the men they had just befriended.
