Armed with autonomy and technology, India's colleges are riding a new wave in pedagogy

behaviour, supplier behaviour and the nature of goods and the market. While trying to understand market dynamics in her economics class, Anjali, 18, experienced it first-hand and then related the practices in the market to theory.

“I had to go out into the market and sell products. At the same time, I had to adhere to rules and laws set by our pro-fessor on where to sell and how much to sell and figure out the best ways to sell the product,” she says. She was asked to sell crayons on a train. “I was not allowed to sell on a par-ticular stretch because it was another seller's turf. I realised I could bundle goods like chalk and dusters, which another student was selling, and make a higher profit. I realised the importance of customisation when on Republic Day I sold a bunch of tricolour crayons and made more profit,” she says.

St Xavier's College, which became autonomous in 2010, has been pioneering a multidisciplinary, critical thinking-oriented approach to education. The freedom to create its own syllabus has helped the college tackle the menace of rote learning that has plagued Indian education. The rev-erend Frazer Mascarenhas, principal, says it is critical to learning. “We are using the blooms taxonomy in a struc-tured way,” he says. “This has several levels; one is the area of knowledge, the other is the area of understanding, the third level is the level of application and the fourth the area of creativity. Earlier, we were just concentrating on the first level. So the higher order skills were not looked at. Now, even the way we teach and evaluate is looking at all three levels. So when a teacher is setting a question paper, he or she has to show me these levels in proportion reflected in the question paper. The whole teaching and learning meth-odology has changed.”

The participative nature of education has only admirers among students. Akshay Shetty, a final-year student at St Xavier's, likes the fact that he can challenge the textbook and analyse it, instead of just gobbling it up. “In one of our political science classes, we were given an event in history and asked to analyse it. We realised that one single narra-tive of an event is never really possible. Political science,

with what they have been building, a sports car. Welcome to the garage of the K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai—a place its electrical, mechanical and IT stu-dents call home.

Pramath Patel, one of the students, has spent the past 40 hours in the garage. Visibly deprived of sleep, he smiles shyly when asked if he had eaten anything. The car has robbed them of their vacation, but no one is complaining. And there is an adrenaline rush when one student walks in with a set of high-end tyres, the last piece in the puzzle they have been making.

This garage, a microcosm of an automobile manufactur-ing plant, is where a large part of these students' education happens. And they are liking it this way. When it comes to real-life exposure, they cannot ask for more. The car they are building will go to a competition in Germany; but what is even more important to Patel, and other students, is the learning. Apart from applying what they were taught from textbooks, these students have learnt important lessons in time management and teamwork. “While building the car, not only do we get exposure to computer engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, but we also learn communication skills and marketing skills, which are not part of the curriculum,” says Patel.

It has long been a concern for employers that engineering students are seldom industry ready—the complaints range from graduates not being in sync with prevalent practices to not having good communication skills—and they have to spend a lot of money and time on training them. These days, however, there is a renewed focus on creating relevance in academics.

“Studying within the four walls of a class does not make students engineers,” says Dr Shubha Pandit, principal, K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering. “I have to give quality in my students so that they are better employable. We take a lot of interest in supporting students so that they can do these projects. It is not that people are interested only in depth, people are going for breadth. A mechanical engineer need not be only a mechanical engineer. He should have knowledge of electronics. If he is working on some auto-mobile there is so much of electronics in it. He wants to become an industry-ready engineer rather than a mechani-cal engineer.”

What Pandit and other pedagogues are trying to do is to break down the walls between disciplines and between industry and academia. As a result, learning has now begun to take precedence over getting an educational qualifica-tion.

The biggest beneficiaries of this change, evidently, are students. Anjali Iyer, an arts student at St Xavier's College, Mumbai, will find it hard to forget the concepts of consumer

therefore, cannot be studied in a theoretical way,” he says. Cross-disciplinary programmes are another big leap. An

arts student who wants to gain knowledge in a science sub-ject can actually do it. “I was interested in web designing and decided to take up the course offered by our IT depart-ment,” says Shetty. “Initially it was a bit difficult but now I know basic web design.”

AT K.J. Somaiya College of Science and Commerce in Mumbai, the focus has been on taking science away from its stodgy ways. The curriculum now makes space for cocur-ricular activities as well. So yoga and basketball and Spanish and dance are now part of the curriculum. And reading and analysing have made a comeback. “As part of the evaluation process, students are expected to read a tome on a particu-lar subject and do a presentation. We realised that critical

THE WEEK-Hansa Research Best Colleges Survey 2014 covered 11 disciplines— arts, commerce, sci-ence, engineering, medicine, law, hotel management, social work, fashion technology, mass com-munication and dentistry. The cities covered for the survey are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, B h u b a n e s wa r, C h a n d i g a r h , Chennai, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Noida, Patna, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Vadodara.

Perceptual data collectionA primary survey was conducted among 729 academic experts, 2,342 students, 290 aspiring students and 24 recruiters spread across cities and disciplines. The sample was selected ensuring proper represen-tation of all 25 cities and 11 disci-plines. Recruiters were consulted for rating only engineering colleges, and aspiring students were inter-viewed for rating only engineering and medical colleges.

A closed-ended questionnaire was given and all stake-holders were asked to nominate and rank the top 25 colleges in India and the top colleges in their respective cit-

ies. Of the 3,385 interviews, 48 were in-depth and helped in validating the data and providing rationale for the rankings, wherever required.

Factual information collectionFactual information was collected from March to May 2014. A dedi-cated website was created and the link was sent to more than 2,000 top colleges. Advertisements were published in THE WEEK, invit-ing colleges to participate in the survey. Responses were sought through phone calls, emails and personal visits. As many as 178 col-leges responded. Two colleges were rejected as they did not meet the eli-gibility criteria.

Ranking methodologyRankings of colleges for arts, com-merce, science, medicine, law, engineering and hotel management were based on a composite score derived by combining the percep-tual and factual scores. Some top colleges could not respond within the stipulated time. For these col-leges, composite score was derived by combining the perceptual score with an interpolated appropriate factual score based on their position on the list.

and creative thinking needs to be brought back,” says Dr Vijay Joshi, principal of the college.

Armed with autonomy, K.J. Somaiya and St Xavier's are giving their curriculum an overhaul. And many other col-leges are following suit, albeit with certain constraints. Says Sucheta Ketkar, vice-principal, Ramnarain Ruia College of Arts and Science, Mumbai: “We had started interdisci-plinary courses like biotechnology and biochemistry, and now there is a course in bioanalytical science, which is a combination of many subjects. There is always a gap with actual industry and academics but, with these new courses and some add-on courses, we are trying to bridge the gap. All industries need software training and we are trying to incorporate that.”

on love is immensely popular among both arts and science students. “The idea is to make theory more accessible, encourage out-of-the box thinking and create something thought provoking,” says Deboshruti Ray Chaudhury, dean of student affairs at the college. The course focuses on vari-ous aspects of love. The modules covered range from the way popular cinema interprets love to the different kinds of love in the Bhakti movement. “Courses like this train students to think rigorously on topics which would be con-sidered mundane,” says Sukanya Sarbadhikary, assistant professor, department of Sociology.

That research and development has become a priority for colleges is evident in the initiatives taken by them. Dr P.C. Jain, principal, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi, believes research should be part of the teaching process. “We have set aside 030 lakh for a year at our centre of excel-lence and award this money for research or seminar activi-ties,” he says. The idea is to give incentives to faculty and encourage research.

Ramnarain Ruia College has an MSc course in herbal science and strong herbal research going on in the col-lege. “Now even the UGC has realised that research starts at the undergraduate level,” says Ketkar. “It has started a new scheme wherein undergraduate students are taken for research.” According to Narayan Rangaraj, dean (academic programmes), IIT Bombay, there is a policy push from the government towards research in higher education, espe-cially doctoral degrees, and increased funding for research programmes.

Keeping industry in the loop has also become a priority for colleges. “We have made drastic changes in the sylla-bus,” says Mascarenhas. “The syllabus is upgraded regu-larly. Two people from industry come in on our boards.

Now no one can say what we are teaching is not relevant to industry. We have made the syllabus interdisciplinary; so prior to our boards our teachers refer to other disciplines.”

Shri Ram College of Commerce has a different approach to it. It has formed a centre for academia-industry interface, a centre for community engagement, and an entrepreneur-ship development and executive mentor programme. As part of the pedagogy, corporate professors, who have years of experience in the corporate world, are invited to give lec-tures. Chocko Valliappa, vice-chairman of Sona College of Technology in Salem, Tamil Nadu, said his college's autono-my helped it incorporate soft skills development, which was a long-pending industry requirement, in the curriculum.

Education, undoubtedly, is one of the major beneficiaries of the growth of the internet. Many colleges in India use massive open online courses to give students the benefits

of global education. “These courses offer a supplemental classroom and the access to good faculty. I think it is fun-damentally changing the way we approach education,” says Narayan Ramaswamy, partner and head of education prac-tice at KPMG India. At K.J. Somaiya College, students are asked to complete at least one online course.

While these courses can strengthen a student's profile, they do not match the potential of a full-time course. “These courses are given little weightage in the assessment of an application to study or work abroad, or even during immi-gration,” says Varun Aggarwal, COO, Unvariety, a college admission planning service provider. “It is advisable to take these courses only if they complement the main course of study or if students want to improve a certain skill or enhance their profile.”

While the old colleges are trying to reinvent themselves, new ones are trying to make a case for liberal education. Ashoka University in Haryana, which claims to offer an Ivy League experience, is trying to revive India's focus on pure arts and science courses. Founded by industrial-ists such as Arjun Bhagat (president and CEO, Caliberated Group), Sanjeev Bikhchandani (vice-chairman, InfoEdge) and Ashish Dhawan (CEO, Central Square Foundation), the university has collaborated with the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan, Sciences Po and Carleton College. “We are focused on excellence and a list of our faculty have left tenured positions in universities abroad to come and teach here,” says Vineet Gupta, founder and trustee, Ashoka University.

According to Jonathan Gil Harris, professor of English at Ashoka University, it wants to change the way Indian students think. “I would like to turn the argumentative Indian into an Indian who can make an argument. I want to introduce them to critical thinking and help organise their thoughts,” he says. The Indian student seems to be ready for it. ●

Sonalika Reddy, 17, has little trepidation about leav-ing home and living alone in a foreign country. In fact, she is excited about it and had been working towards realising her dream of earning a degree in

finance or business from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and then an MBA from a top US university. She chose Hong Kong because of the quality of education the university offered and she wanted to experience a dif-ferent culture. Although Sonalika is the first in her family to go abroad to study, she thinks it was the natural progres-sion. “Most of my batch is opting to study abroad,” she said.

Foreign education is no longer a privilege of the elite.

Budding trend “For one, there is a lot more money in the system. As a result, people opt for undergraduate schools abroad. Second, there is a huge gap between the education offered in Indian insti-tutions and the demand available,” said Madhavi Desai of Madhavi Desai Consulting. Popular courses Indian students opt for include accounting, management and humanities.

Thanks to the proliferation of global boards at the school level, the transition from school to a foreign college has become smooth. Mohan Siddhartha, who studied at an international school in Hyderabad, is all set to join Carnegie Mellon University this August. He took the decision two years ago when he realised he would not be able to pur-sue his dreams in India. “I wanted to do research and all research opportunities are available in the US. Indian edu-cation is more focused on getting jobs,” he said. Siddhartha, 17, wants to work in the field of artificial intelligence.

Interestingly, it isn't just the big city lads with deep pock-ets who are outward bound. “When we go to schools for counselling, we realise there is equal traction from cities like Chandigarh and Ludhiana where students opt for insti-tutions in the US and the UK,” said Varun Aggarwal, COO and co-founder, Unvariety.

Should we be worried about India's best brains head-ing abroad at a young age? “There are enough brains to be drained,” said Aggarwal. “The problem is that volumes have increased, so colleges are focused on getting great talent, not just good talent.”

In an ideal world, students graduate, make their way into the workforce and rise through the ranks in their career. In the real world, however, education and expertise do not necessarily go hand in hand. In

fact, employers seldom find employable graduates owing to the shortfalls in curricula.

This situation, however, has become an opportunity for those who are equipped to fill this gap. “College cur-riculum limits the scope for a teacher to impart industry-relevant skills and share from real world experience. Our training is structured to impart practical skills which can be directly implemented at work,” said Rushabh Rawal, co-founder of Findamental, which offers certificate courses in subjects such as financial modelling, mergers and acquisitions analysis and private equity. “Our course is not a typical lecture series, but training sessions, where students analyse and value businesses on their own with the guidance of our trainers. Our trainers offer their per-spective on industry events and the challenges faced in applying academic concepts, thus keeping the material relevant and students engaged.”

Almost all sectors are following this trend. Sivakrishna Akhilapally, 24, a graduate in computer science, was desperately looking for a job when he came across CMC Academy, which promised him training essential for employability. “The on-the-job training for three months and training experience were fantastic. The faculty and trainers were experienced and professional. It was hands-on practical training and I use the material given to me in the course even in my current job,” said Akhilapally, who works in building internal information systems.

According to Arun Verma, global SBU head, education and training, CMC Academy, 85 per cent of the non-engi-neering graduates and 75 per cent of the engineering grad-uates need intervention before joining the workforce. “We are into the employability space, bridging the academia to the industry space,” he said.

“We realised that engineering graduate enrolment is around 1.5 million. This means there should be a larger non-engineering segment that needs training. We have zeroed in the areas of building and construction, organised retail, IT, BFSI and health care,” said Verma. “Typically our programme would be of three months, followed by nine months' on-the-job training where students would be paid. ”

Booster shotLinking the gap between education and employability could ensure a good career


Many colleges have tied up with these training providers. A company called Jay Robotix, for instance, assigns indus-try professionals in colleges to help students with robotics. It has even launched centres of excellence in robotics in many engineering institutes. “Our aim is to create tools and services for students and make them understand various topics in a hands-on manner so they can convert an idea into a prototype,” said Sudhir Reddy, managing director, Jay Robotix.

These programmes and certifications not only offer stu-dents tools to excel at their workplace but also help them widen their career options. “We had a diverse group of stu-dents and the training programme benefited each student differently,” said Rawal. ●
