Welcome to the SOAP 41st Annual MeetingDear Colleagues,
On behalf of the organizing committee, our meeting host Robert R. Gaiser, M.D., our Executive DirectorJill Mlodoch, and myself, I’m looking forward to seeing you at the 41st Annual Meeting of SOAP inWashington, D.C.! As I’ve been saying for months now, “Yes, there is a little party in January (with theinauguration of 44th President), but the real fun occurs in April at our Annual Meeting!”
We have chosen as our theme, “Creating a Safer Practice Environment,” and you’ll observe that ourprogram reflects essential and new information that will improve your own practice environment andpatients’ outcomes in the many locations (private vs. academic, national vs. international, small vs.large) where we make a difference every day. Make your plans to arrive on Tuesday, April 28th, because our pre-meeting program begins on Wednesday morning with an opportunity to brush up onyour Obstetric Anesthesia Crisis Skills (with mannequins undergoing real scenarios), enhance your Research and Grant Writing Success, and Learn New Paradigms from some of the world’s expertsthrough our joint symposium with the Obstetric Anesthesia Society of Asia and Oceania (OASAO)! Inaddition, our social programs begin on Wednesday, and let’s just say that there’s going to be more thana few iconic politicians, movie stars, and sport legends in attendance!
On Thursday, treat yourself to the special lecture by Charles A. Czeisler, Ph.D., M.D., who’s responsible for most of the sleep medicinestudies that have kept our NASA astronauts, our armed services personnel, our patients, and interestingly, ourselves, safe from sleepdeprivation. How little sleep can you actually handle? Pro/Con Debate, Clinical Protocol Panels, Pearls on informed consent, minimiz-ing neuraxial risks, and handling complications, and the Latest News in the published literature within Obstetric Anesthesia (OstheimerLecture), Obstetrics, and Obstetric Medicine will also be shared. We’ll also celebrate the accomplishments of our Distinguished ServiceAwardee, Sanjay Datta, M.B. and hear the wisdom of Joy L. Hawkins, M.D., our Hehre lecturer.
Our Awards Dinner on Saturday evening has a creative theme with entertainment that will make it a venue not to be missed, and thenSunday, we’ll conclude with our joint symposium with the North American Society of Obstetric Medicine (NASOM), where we’ll get anin-depth review of different pathologies that we can see on a regular basis.
If you’re new to SOAP, an OASAO or NASOM member, or haven’t been to a SOAP meeting in a while, this is the meeting you won’twant to miss! If you have been attending regularly, prepare to be amazed! I’m very much looking forward to seeing you at this meeting!
Cheers,
Lawrence C. Tsen, M.D.SOAP President Elect and Scientific Program Chair
