The VNUS® Closure procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for superficial venous reflux. A thin catheter is inserted into the vein, delivering radiofrequency (RF) energy to the vein wall causing it to heat, collapse, and seal shut. How long does the VNUS® Closure Procedure take? The VNUS® Closure procedure takes only 1-2 minutes, though patients normally spend 90 minutes in the office due to normal pre- and post-treatment protocol. Will my legs look better after VNUS® Closure? VNUS® Closure is performed to treat the medical condition, however, many patients notice visual improvement after treatment. We have cosmetic treatments available as well. Is the VNUS® Closure Procedure uncomfortable? Most of our patients report little or no discomfort during treatment. Local anesthesia is all that is required. Our patients enjoy a movie or a concert during treatment. How effective is the VNUS® Closure Procedure? Published data suggests that two years after treatment, 90% of the treated veins remain closed and free from reflux, the underlying cause of varicose veins. When can I return to normal activities? Patients can resume normal activity or work immediately after treatment. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and prolonged periods of sitting or standing should be avoided for 2-4 weeks following treatment. How soon after treatment will my symptoms improve? Most patients report a noticeable improvement in their symptoms within 1-2 weeks following the procedure. For some patients, we recommend sclerotherapy treatments for any remaining visible veins. Is the VNUS® Closure treatment covered by my health insurance? We have a dedicated staff to complete the preauthorization process and help you with any questions regarding your coverage. Is there any scarring, bruising, or swelling after the procedure? Patients report minimal to no scarring or swelling following the Closure procedure. Minor bruising is normal and temporary. Do you experience leg pain, swelling and bulging varicose veins? If so, you may be suffering from superficial venous reflux disease. Approximately 25 million people in the United States suffer from this condition. Traditionally, patients diagnosed with venous reflux would undergo painful vein stripping surgery. Now, an array of minimally invasive treatment modalities are available.

What Causes Varicose Vein Disease? Understanding Superficial Venous Reflux

Experience You Can TrustOur medical team, led by board-certified cardiovascular surgeons, lead the nation in the VNUS Closure.

Veins are an integral part of the circulatory system as are the heart and the ar-teries and deserve the specialized care offered by the Cardiovascular Surgeons that specialize in treating diseases of the blood vessels. While a great variety of specialty physicians may offer vein treatments, at MVP, vein care is all we do. Vein disease often indicates a treatable circulatory condition and quite often it is not just a cosmetic problem limited to the skin.

Maryland Vein Professionals offers Sclerotherapy as part of our array of minimal-ly invasive treatment options for vein disease. MVP’s sclerotherapists have over 40 years of combined experience and have treated thousands of happy patients.

Our sonography staff is specially trained in vascular ultrasound and have a combined 30 years of experience in the field.

Varicose veins are known for their distinctive blue color and their bulging appear-ance on the skin. They afflict 10-20% of the adult population. Small “spider veins” or telangiectasias are a form of varicose vein disease, and often are the first sign of venous insufficiency. This circulatory disorder may present itself in many forms from spider veins to ulceration.

Your legs are made up of a network of veins. Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart. Venous reflux disease develops when the valves that keep blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart become damaged or diseased. This can cause blood to pool in your legs and lead to symptoms such as pain, swelling, swollen limbs, leg heaviness, fatigue, skin changes, skin ulcers, and varicose veins.

The VNUS® Closure ProcedureThe VNUS® Closure procedure, an alternative treatment option to traditional vein stripping surgery, brings state-of-the-art technology to an age-old disease. The Closure procedure treats venous reflux disease in the superficial venous system, often the underlying cause of painful varicose veins.

The Closure procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Using ultrasound, the physicians position the Closure catheter into the diseased vein through a small opening in the skin. The tiny catheter delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy to the vein wall. As the RF energy is delivered and the catheter is withdrawn, the vein wall is heated, causing the collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. Once the diseased vein is closed, blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.

Maryland Vein Professionals is proud to be at the forefront of this new technology performing more than 15,000 procedures as of November 2011.

Sclerotherapy TreatmentSclerotherapy is a common treatment modality for small, superficial varicosities known as “spider veins”. Our sclerotherapists use an extremely fine needle to inject a sclerosant medication directly into the targeted vein and its branches. This causes the treated veins to collapse, and has the visual effect of causing the vein to disap-pear. We do offer sclerotherapy as part of our comprehensive array of vein care services at Maryland Vein Professionals. However, we do assess for and treat the un-derlying cause of these superficial varicosities before we recommend sclerotherapy. The sclerotherapy treatment itself is much more effective and the results much longer lasting when a healthy circulatory pattern has been restored by correction of the underlying reflux.

“The doctors and staff are so caring and friendly. I really enjoyed my experience at the facility. I would highly recommend this procedure to anyone who is in need of vein closure.” – John J
