To determine whether or not the Council will grant an allowance to the Mayor for the ensuing year.

If it is determined to grant an allowance to fix the amount .

To elect a Mayor for the ensuing twelve months.

If the Council so desires, to elect a Deputy Mayor, and determine if such election is to be for the Mayoral Year.

It was resolved: "THAT the Council grant an allowance to the Mayor for the ensuing Mayoral year."

It was resolved: "THAT the Mayoral allowance for the ensuing year be £150;/'

~ominations were then invited for the office of Mayor and as there was only one nomination that of Alderman Patrick Joseph Walters, he wasduly declared elected unanimously as Mayor of the Municipality of Newtown for the ensuing Mayoral Year. The retiring Mayor (Alderman A.E. Greenup, J.P.) inducted the new Mayor, Alderman P.J. Walters, into the Chair and on behalf of the Members, congratulated him on his success. The Mayor briefly responded and thanked the Members for the honour conferred upon him.

:It was resolved: "THAT a Deputy Mayor be elected, and the election be for the Mayoral Year." On nominations being invited, Alderman Joseph Solomon, J.P. being the only nominee, was duly declared elected to the office of Deputy Mayor for the ensuing year.

Alderman Beaufils was absent in accordance with leave granted on 12th October, 1943, and it was resolved: "THAT in view of the circumstances, attendant apologies be accepted from Aldermen (Mrs.) Fowler, Brannan and Newnham."

And there being no further business the Meeting terminated at ?.27 p .m.

Minutes of a meeting of the Council of the Municipality of Newtown, held at the Town Hall, Newtown, on Tuesday, 7th December 1943 at 7.30 p.m.

His Worship the Mayor (Alderman P.J. Walters), the Deputy Mayor (Alderman J. Solomon, J.P.) and Aldermen (Mrs) Fowler, Greenup, Goddard, Smith, Bugler, Newnham, Brannan, Fleming and Pawley.

MINUTES:

Each member of the Council having received a copy of the minutes of the previous meeting, it was resolved that the minutes as circulated be taken as read and confirmed and signed as a true record of the ordinary meeting held on 23rd November, 1943.

STilPATHY:

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen, it was resolved by the members

rising in silence that letter of sympathy be forwarded to Mr. c. O'Brien, 106 Australia St.,

on the loss of his wife.

Further consideration of the letter from the Commonwealth Salvage Commission asking the

Council to appoint a District Chairman and co-operate with the Government in the collection

of salvage. Resolved: "THAT His ~orship the Mayor (Alderman P.J. Walters) be nominated

as Chairman of the District Salvage Committee as requested by the Commonwealth Salvage

Commission.

From illiams, Ryman & Co. applying for approval of subdivision of Nos. 6 and 8 Hawken

Btreet. Resolved: "THAT the application be received, subdivision approved, and the usual

certificate issued.

REPORT:::>:

Town Clerk submitted a plan which had been drawn up in connection with the proposal required

for presentation to the Premier of New South Wales for his consideration regarding the

taking over of the Newtown-Camperdown Cemetery, and it was resolved: "THAT the plan be

received and approved and it be left in the hands of the Mayor and Alderman Greenup to

present the matter to the Premier.

The Supervisor submitted his report of Works Progress during the past two weeks and it was

resolved that the report be received and adopted.

The Chief Health Inspector submitted a report as contained in Folios 3?6 and 3?7 of the Chief

Health Inspector's Report book, and it was resolved that the report be received and it be

considered seriatim. It was resolved: "THAT paragraph 3 be received and adopted and that

the matter be referred to the Minister of Education with a request for attention to the

defects mentioned before the school holidays." It was then resolved that the Health

Inspectors report as a whole be received and adopted.

The Building Inspector submitted an application for approval to substitute brick for

galvanised iron for walls for Laundry and Bathroom of 80 Regent Street. Resolved: "THAT

the application be approved".

!{UESTIONS 'NITHOUT NOTICE:

Alderman Brannan asked that the Health Inspector investigate the trouble with smoke from

-the Incinerator Stack between 5 and ? p.m. The Health Inspector replied that it was

probably due to the recent clean-up and should be eliminated by now •

nlderman Pawley drew attention to the fact that the bells recently put on the Garbage Carts

were too small and suggested that larger bells be purchased.

Alder:nan Smith asked that the Works Committee meet as soon as possible in the new year. ,..,

ORDERS OF THE DAY:

-Fixing the date of the next Council Meeting :. It was resolved: "THAT the next meeting of

t he Council be held on the 4th January, 1944, at the usual time.

Appointment of Committee:

Finance & Building Committee: It was resolved: "THAT the Finane~ and Building Committee

be constituted by the whole of the Council.

Works, Building and Parks Committee: It was resolved: "THAT the Works, Building and

Parks Committee be -His Worship the Mayor, Alderman P.J. Walters. The Deputy Mayor , Alderman J. Solomon Aldermen Messrs. Pawley and Newnham.
