    ARE YOU REGISTERED ????

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? Although you may attend Mass on a regu-lar basis, unless we have a registration form our records will not show you as a registered member. Please encourage your friends and family to register. Registering is important because: If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all– especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register. Registered parishioners receive helpful information about the parish. Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/ Confirmation sponsor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office and on the parish website.

“You missed the point,” we might be tempted to shout at the servant in today’s Gospel. His master had just forgiven a huge debt when he cried for mercy, and yet, when given the opportuni-ty to show mercy himself, he instead acted violently and with ret-ribution toward a fellow servant. Certainly, he had missed the point of his master’s merciful actions toward him, and suffered the consequences as a result. He missed the point. He is not alone, however. We all “miss the point” sometimes—we miss the point of God’s enduring covenant of love, and miss the mark in our call to live as though we are the Lord’s, for this is who we are.

When Peter asked Jesus how many times he must forgive, he was probably stunned at Jesus’ response. Peter had asked, “As many as seven times?” Seven being the perfect number, surely this is enough forgiveness, Peter likely thought. Jesus’ response seems lavish beyond proportion. “I say to you, not seven times but sev-enty-seven times.” Jesus understands the fullness of God’s mercy and teaches that disciples are called to this same lavish outpouring of mercy. God showers compassion on humanity, beyond what might seem sensible or wise, yet we are called to “remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults,” to give others the benefit of the doubt, knowing that God does this and more with us, each and every day. As recipients of God’s compassion, we must extend forgiveness and care beyond what might seem rea-sonable, because God’s love is beyond human reason.

    BECOMING MORE LIKE CHRIST

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? All this might seem just too much for us. It is one thing to recog-nize God’s enduring covenant love. It is another to grasp that we are called to the same sort of lavishness in mercy and forgiveness ourselves. Saint Paul helps us put this in perspective. We no longer live for ourselves, but for the Lord. In life and death, we belong to God and are called to be witnesses to God’s love, even in the most challenging circumstances. A friend turns away from us; we are called to turn toward the friend with mercy. A co-worker hurts us; we are called to approach him or her with forgiveness, seventy-seven times no less! God’s love is always about what is just and right. As God’s people, we live and die for the Lord, forgive even when it doesn’t make sense to do so, and leave the rest in God’s hands.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: Matthew 18:21-35 What does Jesus' parable of the unforgiving servant teach us about God's mercy? Sirach 27:30--28:7 As a Christian, how do you constructively deal with your anger? Romans 14:7-9 How would others know you "live for the Lord"?

“Faith is the union of God with the soul.” —St. John of the Cross

Music Ministry The last several months have been unprecedented for all of us in so many ways. Our daily lives have been turned upside down due to the coronavirus, and our music ministry, too, has been affected. As soon as we entered the period of quarantine, all of our music ministries were sus-pended. Since the Third Sunday of Lent (March 15), we have been celebrating Mass without choirs, cantors, or instrumental-ists. I’ve been leading the music alone, as part of our live stream and now as we begin having public gatherings for Sun-day Mass, I will continue leading the music by myself for the time being. I am grateful for all those who participate in our music ministry, and I am disappointed that we have had to cut our time short this season due to COVID-19. I hope that all who have been faithful members of music ministry for so many years will rejoin when our programs are able to safely resume. So when we will have cantors and choirs back for Sunday Mass? The answer right now, the best I can say is I don’t know. Most of the guidelines that the Church is adhering to right now, strongly discourage choirs. Vigorous singing contrib-utes 6x the amount of aerosol particles in the air, which can very easily spread virus. I’m hopeful as we successfully return to public Mass on Sunday, I can use the cantors and instrumen-talists along with myself to lead music. When we do this, we will do so observing social distancing and other precautions. So we will wait and see, and pray for the best as we resume Sunday Mass. May God bless you and keep you safe.

Sunday, September 13, 2020 24th Sunday Ordinary Time Forgive Others the Way God Forgives Us “Peter approached Jesus and asked him, ‘Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, ‘I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.’” – Matthew 18: 21-22 “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” We pray these words each time that we pray the Our Father at Mass and during our own personal prayer time. We know the words, but do we grasp the signif-icance of what we’re praying? In essence, we’re asking God to use the same standard of forgiveness towards us as we use towards others who ask for our forgiveness. Do we really mean that? I like to think that I’m a forgiving person, but I know I’m not perfect in that area and it’s something I need to aware of. That’s why those words from the Our Father should catch our attention. This weekend’s Gospel from St. Matthew talks about forgiveness. We hear about the master who forgave his servant who owed a great debt and was unable to repay. The servant was about to lose everything, but he begged forgiveness from the master who, moved with compassion, forgave the debt. Later, that same servant showed no compassion toward a fellow servant who owed him much less. The master found out about this and handed him over to the torturers until he satisfied his debt.

Jesus used this example to show us that God the Father is compassionate, merciful, slow to anger and quick to forgive. But we must be open to His mer-cy and mirror that mercy and forgiveness in our own lives towards others. If God is infinitely merciful with us, shouldn’t we also be forgiving with our family members, coworkers, neighbors or even a stranger? And not just to say the words, “I forgive you”, but to really mean it “from your heart” as the Gospel says.

Are you still holding on to a grudge or situation that happened weeks, years or even decades ago? Is there someone who you’ve been unable to forgive? While someone may never ask for forgiveness for the way they hurt you, that doesn’t prevent us from forgiving them from the heart. Forgive us our tres-passes as we forgive those who trespass against us.

    Bishop Gregory Parkes

¿Hay alguien a quien no has podido perdonar? Aunque alguien nunca pida perdón por la forma en que te hirió, eso no impi-de que le perdonemos de corazón. Perdona nuestras ofensas como nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden.

2020 Diaconate Discernment Sessions – Beginning this September, our diocesan Diaconate Office will offer a series of discernment sessions for those men who are considering a calling to ministry as a permanent deacon. These sessions are required preparation for, and an integral part of, the application and evaluation process which will occur during the first half of the following year. Before participating in the dis-cernment sessions, inquirers will meet with the director of the program to learn about the discernment process, the require-ments of the formation program, and the ministry of the dea-con. Pastors, if you have men in your parish who you believe may have a calling to service as a deacon, please ask them to contact Sue Huertas in the Diaconate Office: (727) 341-6826 or by email: [email protected]. A letter will also be sent to all pastors by mail later this year.

    ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH

If you want to . . . ♦be on a Spiritual Journey ♦be Baptized ♦Join the Church ♦become Catholic ♦receive Communion with your spouse and/or family ♦received Confirmation & Eucharistas a Baptized Catholic

If any of these apply, RCIA is just what you need! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process for initi-ating adults into the Sacramental Life of the Catholic Church. It is a process designed for adults who have never been bap-tized or who have been baptized in other Christian faiths who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. The process includes four periods, three major rites:

    1. Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry Process) 2. Catechumenate 3. Full Initiation 4. Mystagogy (Action)

Other rituals also mark a person’s journey toward faith and full initiation into the Catholic Church.

RCIA is Not just for those who want to be Cathol ic .

This program is a powerful way to enter into a new lever of learning the True Richness and Teachings of the Catholic Church. If you are already practicing or want to return back to restore your Catholic Faith, the RCIA process can be a great way to restart the fire of the Holy Spirt in your heart. The full-ness of Life comes through faith. The relationship you have with your heavenly Father, His Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirt is through faith and is given as a free gift from God for those who choose to follow.

If today you hear the voice of GOD, harden not your hearts!

    Please Call!

“Inquiry” is a period of spiritual discovery to help an individual understand that the Catholic Faith is a life-long pursuit to build a

strong relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We are excited to meet with you and discuss your journey. Please call or email Kathy and Deacon Frank DeSanto

MAKING A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION BY FATHER RON AUBIN

If for whatever reason, you are not able to attend Mass and receive Jesus in Holy Communion, then I encourage you to make a spiritual communion, or better yet, make your entire day a spiritual communion with Jesus. There are several web sites, listed below, that explain how to do just that. But my favorite prayer for maintaining a spiritu-al communion with Jesus is the Prayer of Saint Patrick, also known as the Breastplate of Saint Patrick: https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/st-atricksbreastplate.html I’ve adapted this prayer to suit my own spiritual needs and my version goes something like this:

Christ be with me, within in me, before me, behind me, beneath me, above me.

Christ be on my right, and on my left. Christ be in my heart, in my mind, in my soul, and in every fiber of my

being. Christ be in my thoughts, in my words, and in my actions.

Christ be in my eyes (what I see), my ears (what I hear), on my lips (what I say),

in my hands (what I do) and in my feet (where I go). Christ be in my sleeping, in my waking, and in all my doing.

I love Jesus, be with me today, that I might be with you forever.

Biblical Women in Crisis - Portraits of Faith and Trust.

This session will offer an Online

ZOOM meeting and an In person session in Immaculata Hall.

All sessions start Monday, September 14, 10am to 12pm.

Please see our website for more details. https://ladyrosary.org/livingwell

Space is limited. There will be training material available for those who are new to Zoom.

We have all faced times of crisis. The key is to respond with faith and trust in the Lord. And who better to learn from than the heroines of the Bible? We will look at six different situa-tions in which biblical women are caught up in difficult, sur-prising, or uncertain situations. The choices they make to

face or embrace those situations are models for us when we are confronted with such events in our own lives. Among the women studied are Hannah, Naomi and Ruth, Martha,

    and Jesus' mother, Mary.

An Invitation from the Lay Pastoral Ministry Institute (LPMI) People often ask how they might grow in their faith. The LPMI of the Diocese of St. Petersburg was founded in 1997. It is a four-year program: an informal year of discernment and three years of formal academic training and spiritual growth. The initial segment, the Year of Discernment, consists of eight Sat-urday sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The classes meet at Christ the King Parish (821 S. Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa). Clas-ses begin on September 12, 2020 and continue once monthly through April 2021. Through an integrated process of education and ongoing faith formation, we provide an opportunity for Catholics across the Diocese to grow spiritually, intellectually, and pastorally. Many of our St. Paul parishioners have complet-ed this program in past years.

The registration form and program information can be found on the LPMI website at: www.dosp.org/lpmi. You may also email [email protected] or call 727.344.1611, ext. 5458.

Registrations are due in the LPMI office no later than September 9, 2020.

You can make APA donations through our web site: www.ladyrosary.org/give.

We understand this will be a most distressing time for all families. However we are still called to support the work of our parish and Diocese. So we continue to ask all those who are able to financially support either our Annual Pastoral Appeal or parish offertory, please do so.

    Saint Michael’s Ministry

We are hoping to reopen our ministry this Fall. We need help for Young Disciples, Edge, and Life Teen. If you have been involved and would like to come back in September, or if you are new and would like to help in some capacity, please send an email to [email protected] or call the office (813) 949-4565. We need volunteers for our SAT (Safety helpers) SRT (Law enforcement and military background) and MRT (Medical and nursing background) to assist with keeping the children on campus safe while they learn about their faith.
