Gary Cooper and his 1929 Duesenberg J-431 Derham Tourster

Cover Story

The Model J DuesebergThe Model J Duesenberg was introduced at the New York Auto Show December 1, 1928. The horsepower was rated at 265 and the chassis alone was priced at $8,500. E.L. Cord, the marketing genius he was, reamed of building these automobiles and placing them in the hands of Hollywood celebrities. Cord believed this would generate enough publicity to generate sells.

• 1931 J-431 Derham Tourster

• Originally Cooper was to receive a 1929, J-403 with chassis Number 2425, but a problem with the engine resulted in a factory switch and engine J403 was replaced by J-431 before it was delivered to Cooper.

• Only eight of these Toursters were made

• The vehicle still survives and has been restored to its original condition. It is in the collection of the Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, MA.

• The instrument panel provided unusual features for the time such as an altimeter and service warning lights.

LetterFrom the Executive Director & CEO Brandon J. Anderson

“The proportion and lines of the Cord come nearer expressing the beauty of both science and logic than any car I have ever seen.”Frank Lloyd Wright

A very prominent and forward-thinking architect, Frank Lloyd Wright’s admiration of the Cord stands as a testament to the vehicles that were conceived, designed, engineered, built, marketed, and exported from this National Historic Landmark treasure that is now our museum. The Art Deco architecture and styling of the building both speak to dominant, unimpeded forward motion and future thinking, which represents the status of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum.

The vision for the future will lead us into 2019 and will set the stage for new exhibits, programs, tours, events, partnerships, and ways to experience and to be a part of the museum. As the stewards of such a rich and diverse collection, we look forward to expanding upon the history and heritage we preserve. This includes additional emphasis on our historic building, Art Deco architecture, design and engineering, art, automobiles, history, and the legacies of the men and women who shaped the past.

2019 will initiate the completed Historic Structures Report done by Ratio Architects, which fully investigated and reported on all the needs of our 1929 building and how to best preserve and restore this structure for the future. A campaign will launch at the beginning of the year and will address areas of immediate concern and will restore our beautiful crown jewel.

Next year will also be the celebration of the 45th anniversary of the museum! It is hard to believe, but the Auburn Automobile Company Administration Building has served as a museum longer than its original purpose or as anything else in its 90-year life. We look forward to celebrating in a monumental way and ensuring that we will have many anniversaries in the future!

Be sure to stay on the lookout for all of the new ways to engage by staying up-to-date with our social media, e-mail newsletters, and finally a NEW website debuting at the beginning of 2019!

We look forward to seeing you at the museum and hope you share in our excitement for next year and all that it will bring to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum

CORDially,

Brandon J. AndersonExecutive Director & CEO

New Special Exhibit Debuts in November – Cars of the StarsBy Jon Bill, Curator

Auburns and Cords have always been known for their rakish style and stunning performance. As such, they attracted more than their fair share of attention from the public when they were new. Their eye-catching appearance made these in-vogue automobiles even more appealing to celebrities. The museum’s curatorial department has developed a special exhibit dedicated to the immortals that were owners of some of our favorite vehicles. The staff selected three American heroes of the 1920s and 30s, and cars like the ones they drove, to represent the many notable individuals that enjoyed ownership of the products from the Auburn Automobile Company. The exhibit is located in the Gallery of Excellence and Innovation on the upper level of the museum. The display is set to open on November 19.

BABE RUTH AND THE 1926 AUBURN 8-88 ROADSTERBabe Ruth of baseball’s New York Yankees’ “Murderer’s Row” was without a doubt the most famous athlete of his time. In 1926, he was presented with a new Auburn 8-88 Roadster by the magazine “Police Gazette.” Auburn, always on the lookout for publicity, was quick to make this fact known to potential customers. The photograph and caption taken from an original 1926 issue of “The Accelerator” (sent to Auburn dealers) underscores this point. The museum’s 1926 Auburn 8-88 Roadster is virtually identical to the Babe’s car and will be on display with a life-size cut-out of the “Sultan of Swat,” to provide great photo opportunities for museum visitors.

AMELIA EARHART AND HER 1937 CORD 812 Few Americans have sparked the imagination of our nation like Amelia Earhart. She was an inspiration to all. Her adventurous spirit and love of aircraft and flying, put her in the world’s spotlight. What better car for her to drive than an aircraft-inspired new Cord. Earhart’s husband, George Putnam, gifted her with a 1937 Cord shortly before her fateful attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

Amelia Earhart proudly displays her new Cord Phaeton next to “The Flying Laboratory” her Lockheed Electra 10E at Purdue University Airport. A life-size cut-out of Ms. Earhart will accompany the exhibit with a Cord Convertible finished in Cigarette Cream, a light-yellow hue. Yellow was her favorite color.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT AND HIS CORD L-29 CABRIOLET Frank Lloyd Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as “The Greatest American Architect of All Time.” He also had a fascination with automobiles, purchasing his first car in 1909, a Stoddard-Dayton roadster. Wright went on to own more than 50 cars until his death in 1959. He drove many exotic cars as well as some less expensive vehicles. Wright was a fan of the Cord L-29 and owned two during his lifetime. He wrote, “I became a Cord owner because I believe the principle of the front drive to be logical and scientific, therefore, inevitable for all cars. The proportion and lines of the Cord come nearer to expressing the beauty of both science and logic than any other car I have ever seen.” The museum is fortunate to hold one of his Cords in our permanent collection along with Wright’s 1952 Crosley Super Sport Roadster that was in his fleet of small cars.

Terence E. Adderley"What happened here will stand through time as an inspiring example of how the dreams of the American automobile industry became a reality." -Terence E. Adderley

The museum family received somber news on October 11, 2018 – news that Terence Adderley had passed away the day before. I know the museum will not be the same without Terry, but it is my understanding that the museum may have never been if it weren’t for Terry. He believed in this museum from its very beginning when pillars of the community were aspiring to save the Auburn Automobile Company Administration Building from the wrecking ball, wanting to start a museum as a testament to the highly revered Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg automobiles that were associated with the Cord Corporation. Terry had a few of those cars in his private collection and became a familiar face at the annual Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club reunions.

He believed in the museum’s importance in commemorating American history, stating “What happened here will stand through time as an inspiring example of how the dreams of the American automobile industry became a reality.”He believed so strongly, that he co-signed the mortgage to purchase the museum building in 1973. That signature made the dream become a reality. From that day on he was an avid ambassador for the museum, serving on its board at times, always participating in activities with his cars, and sponsoring the Terence E. Adderley Gallery of Racers and Record-Setters. He revered race car drivers and the innovations they contributed to society. In 2016 Terence E. Adderley was inducted into the museum’s Hall of Distinguished Service, joining four others who have made a long-term dramatic commitment that had a great impact on the museum. Our hearts go out to his family. He will never be forgotten at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum.

John Souder has always been an artist who was ahead of his time and mature beyond his years. During his career, he has done much more than just the ACD Festival artwork. He worked in the fashion industry in Chicago in the 60’s. He worked as the creative director for WANE-TV when set design and build was as much part of the visuals as the art itself. Souder lived a life of many colors and the festival was blessed to be a small part of that.

Executive Director of the ACD Festival Amber Jackson said, ”John Souder meant a lot to many people for many different reasons. Concerning the ACD Festival community, our loss will be felt not only over Labor Day weekend but in each instance and opportunity that he brought such joy and love for our cars, our community, and his gift of artistic detail that would provide a face for so many years of ACD History. His absence will leave a void. John, we will miss you.”

The Auburn Automobile Company Administration Building

The Auburn Automobile Company Administration Building is part of the campus where cars were hand-assembled, rather than mass-produced. The Showroom and administrative buildings were designed by architect Alvin M. Strauss in Art Deco style and were built in 1930. The approximate cost to build was $450,000.

Strauss was an Indiana architect and designer of many landmark buildings in Indiana and Ohio during the early twentieth century. He was born in Kendallville, Indiana, to German immigrants and later apprenticed under prominent architects in Chicago and Fort Wayne, Indiana. Strauss founded his own practice in Fort Wayne in 1918. Among his commissioned works are the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, the Clyde Theatre, the Lincoln Bank Tower, and the Embassy Theatre and Indiana Hotel in Fort Wayne as well as the Brokaw Theatre in Angola, Indiana.

The facility’s showroom and administrative buildings, the service and new parts building, and the L-29 Service and Parts building were together declared a National Historic Landmark in 2005 (the highest designation in the country). The Secretary of the Interior stated that this site has been found to possess exceptional significance in illustrating or commemorating the history of the United States for the benefit and inspiration of the American people. The museum joins a total of over 2,500 National Historic Landmarks, 22 of which are in Indiana. The museum is located in the former international headquarters building of the Auburn Automobile Company and is recognized as one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Midwest. It was designated an Indiana State Historic Site in 1992.

“First of Three $25,000 donations from Horizon Bank to Museum”Just in time for the 2018 Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival and the busiest weekend in Auburn, Indiana, Horizon Bank made a generous donation to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum. Executive Director & CEO, Brandon J. Anderson stated, “The Museum is honored to have the support of Horizon Bank. Its gift will support the preservation of our 1929 National Historic Landmark building.” Mr. Anderson, shared that the Museum is beginning to secure funds for a preservation and restoration capital campaign along with a feasibility study being conducted by The Hodge Group of Dublin, Ohio.

Monday, August 27, Horizon Bank Market President, Larry Kummer and local branch manager Brent Niebel presented Brandon J. Anderson and local leader and Museum Trustee, Terry Hines, with the first of three $25,000 checks to benefit the upcoming Capital Campaign and building project. Horizon Bank plans to make the three donations over a three-year period.

Duesenberg Chassis DisplayWhen you purchased a Duesenberg Model J, you bought most everything but the body for $8,500. Purchasing a body and other optional equipment pushed the overall total to around $14,000- $15,000 on average. The pit crew is working on a chassis display to be representative of that $8,500 purchase. So far, the frame has been straightened out and painted. It is almost ready to have the engine lowered in place, as well as attaching the axles, springs, and tires. It is planned that the chassis will be ready for placement in the museum in Spring 2019.

The chrome Duesenberg wheel hub nuts and Duesenberg engine mounting materials were generously donated toward the Duesenberg chassis project by Brian Joseph of Classic and Exotic Service, Inc. of Troy, Michigan.

Museum Receives Challenge Matching GrantThe Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum has received a matching challenge grant of $420,000 from the Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville, Wisconsin, to be used toward repair and restoration of the elaborate Auburn Automobile Company showroom. The showroom itself was listed n the National Register of Historic Places and was referred to in the facility’s National Historic Landmark nomination as, “12,000 square feet of Art Deco splendor.”

The Jeffris Foundation grant requires a 2-to-1 match within three years. Fundraising to meet the $840,000 match will be part of the museum’s upcoming capital campaign that includes sealing the building envelope, ensuring the showroom is dry and ready for restoration.

In preparation of this work, the museum participated in a year-long Historic Structure Report in 2016, which was partially funded by the Jeffris Foundation. The report identifies, details, and prioritizes nearly $10 million of repair and restoration work recommended for the building, $5 million of which is necessary and urgent at this time to seal the building envelope. The building is a highly treasured artifact in the museum collection and is one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Midwest.

“This is one of the best projects in the history of the [Jeffris Family] Foundation,” Tom Jeffris, President, exclaimed! “[In reference to this being an automobile museum] We’ve done a lot of house museums. The fact that this is a National Historic Landmark just makes it very special. A 12,000 sq. ft. restoration of Art-Deco splendor, I think this is one of our greatest projects.”

Founded in Janesville, Wisconsin, in 1979, the Jeffris Family Foundation is dedicated to preserving regionally and nationally important historic buildings and decorative arts projects for future generations. The Jeffris Family Foundation assists with the development of historic sites for nonprofit organizations in small towns and cities in eight Midwest states, including Indiana.

“What appeals to me is that it’s so unique as an automobile museum having a great art-deco interior,” continued Mr. Jeffris. “Also, Laura Brinkman’s leadership throughout the process was very helpful in our giving of this grant. Of course, we have a great architectural firm, Ratio Architect, everything came together in a first-class way and here we are getting ready for the restoration.”

Auburn Automotive Heritage, Inc., doing business as Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, is a 501(c)3 educational organization in Auburn, Indana.

“Museum Receives ‘Wish-list’ Automobile”The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum received a 1935 Chrysler Airflow, which has been on the museum’s automobile wish list. The Chrysler was donated to the Museum by William T. Deibel of Seattle, Washington.

In 1934, Chrysler introduced the streamlined Airflow, a radical design that was years ahead of its time. Chrysler engineers wanted to achieve a more aerodynamically efficient automobile. So, along with the help of Orville Wright, they came up with a series of designs. The final product was the Airflow. These cars were of unibody construction and boasted a near 50/50 weight distribution. However, Chrysler’s bold move was

made during the height of the Great Depression, and sales dwindled. The 1935 Chrysler Airflow Imperial

C2 was one of the more popular models with a production run of 2,398 vehicles.

The automobile will be displayed in the Gallery of Excellence

and Innovation on the third floor of the Museum as

part of its permanent collection.

Alan H Leamy: Creator of Classics is a special exhibit that is open until Summer 2019.
