Hadith Five: Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah narrated in a hadith
qudusi (divine hadith) that Allah said, “All the deeds of the sons of Adam are

The Messenger of Allah further said, “Fasting is a shield from the fire and from
committing of sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relations with
his wife and quarreling. If someone argues with him, he should say, “I am fasting.”
By the One in whose hands is my soul, the unpleasant odor that emits from the
mouth of a fasting person is better to Allah than the smell of musk. There are two
joys for the fasting person: one, when he breaks his fast and second, when he meets
his Lord.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Hadith Nine: Kuraib reported that Umm Fadl once sent him [on an errand] to Mu‘awiya
in Syria. He reports, “I arrived in Syria and carried out the errand. Ramadan started
at the same time [I was there] and I saw the new moon (of Ramadan) on Friday. I
then returned to Madina at the end of the month. Abdullah bin Abbas asked me
when we sighted the moon for Ramadan. I replied that we sighted it on Friday
night. He further inquired if I had sighted it myself. I replied in the affirmative. I
informed him that (most of) the people there also saw it and that all the people [of
Syria] and Mu’awiya started their fast [based on that sighting].
He replied, “But as we sighted it on Saturday night, we will continue fasting until
we complete thirty (fasts) or we see it (i.e. the new moon of Shawwal).”
I asked, “Does the sighting of the moon by Mu'awiya not suffice for you?” He
replied. “No. This is what the Messenger of Allah commanded us to do.”
