4.1 Program General Information

As an open university, Athabasca University will acceptapplication to become a student from any individual who is16 years of age or older.

Students complete the program regulations in effect at thetime of their enrolment. For degree programs withenrolment requirements, students will follow the regulationsin effect upon notification of acceptance into the degree.

Students may not enrol in an AU undergraduate degreeprogram while they are enrolled in a degree program atanother post-secondary institution. Those students may takecourses as unclassified (non-program/visiting) students untilthey have either completed or withdrawn from the otherprogram.

Mapping Your FutureMastering Exam Anxiety

4.1.2.1 Program Planning

If you have not completed any post-secondary coursesbefore, we suggest you begin by selecting a preparatory (100level) or junior (200 level) course in your degree area. Butchoose carefully, not all program regulations allowpreparatory-level courses be used to fulfill requirements.

Select a course that includes topics that interest you, andconsider all of the requirements within your specific degreeor certificate program. Some of our undergraduateprograms, such as the Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor ofCommerce degree, have specific program requirements.

Most programs contain a number of core courses andrequired elective courses. Select courses that are designatedas core or required electives first. These junior-level courseswill help provide you with the information base you will needto successfully complete senior (300/400) level courses.

4.1.3 Program Undergraduate Degree GPAandGraduation with Distinction or GreatDistinction

All Athabasca University students who graduate with anundergraduate degree and who have successfully completeda minimum of 24 credits at AU, are automatically consideredfor graduation with distinction or great distinctionrecognition. All completed AU courses taken as part of theundergraduate degree program in which the student isregistered will be used in the program GPA calculationincluding unsuccessful course attempts.

For courses that are repeated, the highest grade achievedwill be used in the program GPA calculation.

Courses excluded from the GPA calculation are:

Transfer courses (courses for which transfer credit hasbeen awarded)Courses using a pass/fail grading schemeCourses with a grade of W (Withdrawal) or WF(Withdrawal Failure), both without academic penaltyCourses considered extra to the degree

4.1.5 Residency Requirement

Residency is defined as the minimum number of AthabascaUniversity credits that must be completed to fulfill aprogram's requirements. In some cases, specific AthabascaUniversity courses are prescribed as part of the overallresidency requirement for a given program.

ADMN 404, for example, is a required course in the Bachelorof Commerce degree and the Bachelor of Managementdegree, and it must be completed at AU. No transfer credit isallowed for this course within the Bachelor of Commercedegree and the Bachelor of Management degree. Pleasereview the residency charts.

Note: Course credit obtained through challenge for creditprocesses will not meet AU residency requirements.

The mission of the Bachelor of Arts is tostrengthen your critical and creativethinking by offering a broad range ofsocial, political, and cultural programs ofstudy. Enrolment Restriction
