9-09-1959: Inaguration of Left Canal Tunnel work. Year 1960: Committee on Plan projects team recommended changes in
the design features of the project. Sep’1960: The Government of India cleared the project estimate. May 1967: Spillway of the dam brought to the crest level(546.00 ft) 04-08-1967: Smt Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister released water into
canals. 15-05-1968: Laying the last masonry stone of the dam. Masonry dam
completed. Year 1974: Erection of crest gates completed. 17-10-1974: The reservoir was first filled upto FRL+590.00 ft 10-07-1978: Dedication of Power unit to the nation. 25-02-1983: Jawahar Canal power house brought into operation. 28-09-1992: Dedication of Lal Bahadur canal power units.
Project Estimate & Expenditure
Planning commission approved the NS project in 1960 for Rs 91.12 crore. The Expenditure incurred upto Oct’2008 is Rs 1248.46 crore. World Bank aid received to complete the balance works as on 1976 to an amount
of Rs 130.50 crore. World Bank loan closed during 1985.

Contemplated ayacut under Jawahar Canal : 4.75 Lakh Ha Ayacut developed under Jawahar Canal : 4.5325 Lakh Ha Balance ayacut to be developed : 0.2175 Lakh Ha An ayacut of 0.2023 Lakh acres is in Tobacco grown area. The Government excluded this
ayacut from N.S.P on the request of ryots.

Andhra Pradesh Economic Restructuring Project
Minimum rehabilitation works, Recurring Maintenance works and System Improvement and Farmers Turnover works were taken up under APERP during the period from 1998-2006.
Expenditure incurred under APERP : Rs 204.63 crore
After 2006 maintenance works under NSP are being taken up from the Plough Back amount.
Deferred maintenance works are being taken up from the Normal state plan budget.
No central assistance for O&M of the project is received so far.
BALANCE AYACUT TO BE DEVELOPED
Contemplated ayacut under Jawahar Canal : 4.75 Lakh Ha Ayacut developed under Jawahar Canal : 4.5477 lakh Ha Balance ayacut to be developed : 0.2023 lakh Ha
The balance ayacut under Jawahar canal is proposed to develop under Modernisation of NSP.
Contemplated ayacut under Lal Bahadur Canal: 4.20 Lakh Ha Ayacut developed under Lal Bahadur Canal : 4.172 lakh Ha Balance I.P to be created : 0.028 lakh Ha Ayacut overlapped under Polavaram project : 0.027 lakh Ha Balance ayacut to be developed under
Lal Bahadur canal : 0.001 lakh HaNS Project can be declared as completed Project after development of above balance ayacut.

Andhra Pradesh Water Sector Improvement Project
Objectives of APWSIP: To improve Irrigation service delivery on sustainable basis To increase the productivity of the Irrigated agriculture. To strengthen the states institutional capacity for multi-sector planning, development and management of its water resources. The ayacut in Tobacco exclusion zone under Jawahar canal to an
extent of 23000 ha is proposed to develop under Andhra Pradesh Water Sector Improvement Project (APWSIP).
Cost of APWSIP: Complete rehabilitation & Modernisation of APWSIP assessed at
Rs 4444.41 crore. Share already agreed by the World Bank : Rs 2025.00 crore State’s share from the state plan : Rs 2419.41 crore.
Stage of Works under APWSIP
Works on both Main canals and Branch canals were commenced in May 2008.
Dam safety works will be commenced in 2009. Works on distributory network system will be commenced in 2009. The project is planned to complete in a span of six years commencing
from 2008.
