We welcome Marists back to Semester 2. 1) 60th Anniversary Celebration Updates: a) Stella Marist! We invite you and your family to join us for this family-focused picnic in the park as Marists serenade tunes that would bring back memories of time passed together. Do keep this date free and join us at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Venue: Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage @ Singapore Botanic Gardens Date: 30 June 2018 (Saturday) Time: 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm

If you are not able to bring your sons for the event, the school will be sending out a Consent Form to seek your consent for your sons to report to school so that the Form Teachers will organise the class to attend the performance. The Form Teachers will also be briefing the students on the necessary administrative matters. We look forward for your support and in meeting you and your family at the Botanic Gardens. As mentioned in the earlier email, a special limited edition Tote Bag, with a picnic mat, an umbrella and a battery-operated fan, is on sale. These items would certainly come in handy at the picnic. To make the Tote Bag and its contents accessible to all who wish to buy it, we have decided to lower the price to $10/- per set. Parents and students who have paid for the bag will receive the number of sets of Tote Bags according to the amount paid. Should parents/students wish to only have the original number of sets, a refund of $10/- per set would be made. Parents/Students who have not paid for the items are requested to make payment ($10/- per set) at the general office by Wednesday 27 June 2018. b) 60th Anniversary Thanksgiving Mass

As we celebrate the 60th year of our founding, we would like to give thanks to God for all the blessings that He bestowed on Marists and the school. All Marists are required to report to school at 7.30 am instead of the usual 8.20 am for Thursdays. We are honoured to have His Grace, Archbishop William Goh, to be the celebrant. As the seating capacity is limited, we regret that this event would be for Marists only.

To capture the key milestones of the school and to honour the achievements of staff and students, our combined Founder’s Day celebration would be the highlight of the 60th Anniversary celebration for Marists. All Secondary 4 and selected Primary 6 students will attend the event. More information will be made known to the students nearer the date. d) 60th Anniversary Reunion Dinner

Venue: The Ritz Carlton Hotel (Grand Ballroom) Date: 28 July 2018 (Saturday) Time: 7.00 pm

The dinner is organised by the Maris Stella High School Alumni and the school to bring all Marists together for a big reunion. We thank all alumni who showed their support for the reunion dinner and look forward to a time for all to reminisce their school days. 2) Updates on Achievements: CCA & Subject related Competition Marists continue to train hard and have done very well in their CCA in Term 2, winning top positions in Archery, Tenpin Bowling and Taekwondo at the National School Games ‘B’ and ‘C’ Divisions Championship. Our NCC, St. John Brigade and Scout CCAs continued to achieve the Gold Award in their Uniformed Groups Overall Proficiency Awards. We would like to share that Justyn Sim Yi Ming (Sec 4F), is selected as a member of the Singapore Schools Sports Team (SSST) to represent Singapore in Badminton, at the 10th ASEAN Schools Games which will be held in Malaysia from 19 to 27 July. We wish Justyn all the best and are confident that he will do us proud. We thank all parents/guardians for your support of your sons’/wards’ endeavours in seeking excellence in their CCAs. Please refer to Annex A for more achievements for the rest of the CCAs. Congratulations to all Marists! While we are very proud of Marists for their achievements in CCA competitions, we believe that what is more important is that the participation in CCA competitions would spur Marists to train hard, learn resilience, build their character and deepen their values. Through CCAs, Marists also learn to work with one another in addition to managing their own conflicting demands and resources. We are heartened that parents agree with us on this as demonstrated by your support for what we do and how we manage the CCAs. We encourage parents to continue to support the school in using CCAs to nurture and educate your sons so that the long term formation of your son would endure the moment of glory. We thank parents for trusting teachers to do their best for Marists and allowing Marists to learn from their CCAs. 3) Student Development a) Racial Harmony Since the founding of modern Singapore, we are an immigrant community that has tapped on the strengths of our differences in pursuit of a common goal to make Singapore our home. The theme for this year is ‘Diversity Our Strength’, where Marists will learn to appreciate diversity in our culture and the practices of the various races in Singapore. b) Brother Chanel Programme: Hosting of Xi’an Students We will be hosting 40 students and 8 teachers from our twinning school, Xi’an Gaoxin No. 1 Middle School from 23 July to 27 July. Our Secondary 2 Marist Ambassadors will be playing host to the exchange students by bringing them around the school, and conducting gallery guided tours at Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH). This meaningful interaction will allow Marists to converse confidently in Mandarin and relate to peers from overseas. c) Brother Chanel Programme: 11th National Chinese Short Film Competition for all

Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges To promote the use of Chinese language, encourage creativity through film production and provide a platform to showcase youths' talent and passion in film-making, our school is organising the 11th National Chinese Short Film Competition for Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges with mm2 Entertainment as a main sponsor. This year we have two teams participating in the competition. They are:

(a) Team No. 14:《写一首歌给你》

(b) Team No. 15:《悔·不当初》

Both teams have put in tremendous effort in conceptualising, writing, filming, producing these films, and designing an original poster. They will be competing with 25 other films in categories such as Best Screenplay, Best Direction and Best Actor. In order to enrich our students’ learning of the Chinese language and encourage them to be proficient users and active learners of the language, all our Secondary 2 students will be attending the Prize Presentation Ceremony on 3 August (Friday), from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. They will also have the opportunity to interact with renowned media professionals and students from other participating schools. d) National Day Our National Day celebration will be held on 8 August (Wednesday). The theme for this year is ‘We Are Singapore’. The celebration will be conducted in two parts. As per past practice, we will celebrate with our Primary Section as a full school. This will build the unity and school spirit in all Marists. It includes a parade put together by our four uniform groups, NPCC, NCC, SJB and Scout, and performances by the Symphonic Band and CCA groups from both the Primary and Secondary Sections. Marists are to wear a red top with school shorts/pants and school shoes on this day. The expected dismissal time is 11.30 am. Marists do not need to attend school on 9 and 10 August and school will resume on 13 August (Monday).

4) Sec 3 NRIC registration Under the National Registration Regulations, all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are required to register for their NRIC in the year the student attains the age of 15 years. To provide greater convenience for our students, the registration exercise will be conducted in our school on 24 August (Friday), 9 am onwards by the ICA Mobile Registration Team. The ICA will send notification letters to the affected Marists through their parents, 2 weeks before the appointment date. Please remind your son/ward to bring along a recent photograph and the necessary original documents for the registration. 5) Academic & Examination Matters a) Secondary 2 Subject Combination Registration Marists will be briefed on how to register for their preferred Secondary 3 subject combinations after the SA2 examinations. The window to register their preference is from 19 October (Friday) to 22 (Monday) October. The Secondary 3 (2019) Allocation Exercise results will be released on 16 November (Friday).

Secondary 2 Marists who are interested in taking Computing as a GCE ‘O’ Level subject will need to undertake an aptitude test as there are limited vacancies. The aptitude test for Computing will take place on 28 August (Tuesday). More details will be sent via the Marist Gmail at a later date.

Please contact the Subject Combination Committee at [email protected] should you have any enquiry. b) Secondary 4 Grade Enhancement Programme We are continuing the Grade Enhancement Programme in the coming term to support the Secondary 4 students in their preparation for the GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations. Selected students who need greater support and structure will be working with their subject teachers to remediate their learning towards better outcomes. We hope to have your support in ensuring that your son attends these sessions. 6) Examination Matters Preliminary Examinations would be held from 13 to 29 August for Secondary 4 Marists. In addition, Secondary 3 and 4 Marists will sit for their GCE ‘O’ Level Oral and Listening Comprehension Examinations on the following dates:

a) GCE ‘O’ Level CL B / CL Listening Comprehension Examination – 17 July Students involved are Secondary 3 Marists offering HCL and Secondary 4 Marists offering CL B / CL.

b) GCE ‘O’ Level CL B / CL / HCL Oral Examination – 4 to 26 July

Students involved are Secondary 3 Marists offering HCL and Secondary 4 Marists offering CL B / CL / HCL.

c) GCE O-Level English Language Oral Examination – 13 to 28 August

Students involved are Secondary 4 Marists.

7) Temperature Taking Exercise The second temperature-taking exercise will be conducted on 28 June (Thursday). This biannual exercise aims to enable Marists to learn to take their own temperature as part of exercising personal and social responsibility. It would also ensure the school’s readiness to activate temperature-taking on short notice when the need arises. The Form Teachers will conduct a thermometer check from 26 June (Tuesday) onwards. Please ensure that your child/ward brings a working oral digital thermometer for the exercise. 8) Traffic Conditions The Housing and Development Board is conducting works to widen the drain outside the Primary Section compound along Bartley Road as part of the Bidadari Development project. The appointed contractor overseeing the construction work at our Primary Section entrance has met with unforeseen circumstances resulting in the delay of the completion of work. We expect that traffic congestion will occur along Bartley Road next Monday and for the coming weeks. As such we advise parents who drive their sons to school to use the Mount Vernon Road / Bidadari estate to reach your destination instead of using Bartley Road. Students who come by the MRT will face an increased number of students using the Bartley MRT gate as the primary parents will be letting their sons alight there as their cars are not permitted to enter the school in the morning until the front entrance is returned to the school. At present, we do not have further details regarding the completion of work and would inform parents when we have the information.
