Dennis WellingtonMAYOR, CITY OF ALBANY

Entertainment, arts and culture contributes to the vibrancy, heritage and activation of our city and region, and plays an important role in tourism and economic growth.

Since it opened, Albany Entertainment Centre (AEC) has provided a modern, contemporary and world-class regional venue supporting arts and culture, and especially local talent.

The City of Albany is extremely proud of the talent we have in our community and the rich and entertaining performances and events they create.

From artists and musicians to school concerts, exhibitions, theatre productions and more, Albany is full of home-grown fl air that has been fostered and supported by the AEC for the past decade.

Whether it’s the Albany Wind Ensemble, Albany Academy of Dance or Sinfonia attracting sell-out audiences, the AEC and the shows it hosts have continued to receive high praise from all corners.

It was the fi rst major construction project on the Albany Waterfront in 2010 and with its architectural form, has become a landmark that represents a hub for creativity and expression.

This year represents an important milestone for the AEC, and we’d encourage the community to embrace the celebration and support the local and visiting concerts and other performances throughout the year.

We’re proud to continue to support the AEC so it can continue to support arts and culture within our community, I look forward to enjoying this year’s program and encourage everyone to attend.

Congratulations to Drew Dymond and the AEC team on what is a fantastic 10th anniversary program. The venue is a world class facility servicing the Great Southern region and has presented events from Australia and around the world to perform here in Albany, including artists such as Sydney Dance Company, Bangarra Dance, Opera Australia, Bell Shakespeare, Circus Oz, Black Swan Theatre Company, West Australian Symphony, Wynton Marsalisand many more. The AEC has hosted national conferences for government and the private sector and also provides function and catering services to the local community. It attracts around 50,000 visitors a year and 30% come from outside of Albany providing a boost to the local economy. This exciting program released for the 2020 anniversary year has something for everyone and is a showcase of the diversity of attractions at the AEC. With some great new initiatives throughout the year, including local artists presenting work and community workshops to showcase the disciplines and skills engaged in the performing arts. I encourage everyone to join in and to make the most of the very special venue that Albany has.

JUDITH LUC Y VS MEN

Judith Lucy is single again…and 51.

She recently reflected on her entire history with men and concluded that maybe it was time to shut up shop.

‘Whatever it is that I’m selling, a lot of straight guys simply aren’t that interested in buying it and I’m including people like my father.’

In amongst exploring stereotypes and her own desires, Judith Lucy will recount her full history with the opposite sex and leave it up to the audience to determine whether she should ever date again.

Should Judith hang up her vagina for good?

In 2019 Judith did a massive sell-out tour around the Capital cities asking this question, but she wants a second opinion. Albany, the decision is yours!

‘Gutsy and gut-bustingly funny, right to the end.’ * * * *HERALD SUN

TEN IN TEN - VISUAL ARTS

Well here we are- who would have thought it….yes, the Albany Entertainment Centre is launching into 2020 with an amazing array of theatre spectaculars and 10 Visual Arts exhibitions in 10 months.

Yes- AEC will be showcasing several artists over 2020, our tenth Anniversary. And these will be different. We are not intending on suddenly creating a gallery inside our amazing theatre foyer. We are instead, asking the Artists to create works that will work with the environment that is already the AEC.

We ask you as the viewers of these works to investigate and react to how the Artists treat this space. You may need to search for the works. You may need to participate with the works to be able to see their full potential. You may need to challenge yourselves and your understanding as to what art is for you.

Please come and transport yourselves into the changing environment of the Albany Entertainment Centre.

Check on our AEC website to see who is exhibiting. Information will be regularly updated.

C A S TING OFF A Good Catch Circus

Intergenerational circus with lots to say: the personal is political, fury is fun and the acrobatics downright dangerous – especially when life gets in the way! Casting Off stereotypes, these dynamic Australian women tumble, fl y and balance precariously.

A disarming, hilarious show about living on the edge and talking about it, and how it’s easier done than said. Circus that makes you laugh and cry simultaneously! Relaxed, personal and fantastically inappropriate.

THE E A S T POINTERS ‘ YOUR S TO BRE AK ’ TOUR

Redefi ning the ever-evolving genre – modern folk – with chart-worthy pop hooks, deep acoustic groove, trance-like trad breakdowns and three-part harmonies, The East Pointers, already internationally acknowledged as musical trailblazers, have made sure their new album ‘Yours To Break’ light a path for a new generation of music lovers who don’t care for labels. ‘Yours To Break’ sits uneasily in a classic genre demarcation. The East Pointers have always been musically complex and technically brilliant, the core is defi nitely traditional Celtic, but on the new album, fi ddle tunes are grounded in complex rumbling bass lines, a dirty Americana exploration turns on a dime into a lighthearted guitar feature with fl amenco reference palmas, playful keyboard tones turn traditional solos into urgent dance-party journeys, and off -the-leash festival jam sessions give rise to vocal numbers that are either perfect pop songs or moving tributes to the home and people they love.

‘The East Pointers are one of the hottest young folk bands on the planet.’ GEOFF WOOD, ABC RADIO

ARCHIE ROACH - TELL ME WHY

One of the most powerful and highly anticipated Australian stories ever told comes to the stage. Not many have lived as many lives as Archie Roach – from stolen child, teenage alcoholic, seeker, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, to social advocate and First Nations leader – but it took almost a lifetime to fi nd who he really was.

In this intimate, moving and often confronting journey, Roach’s story is an extraordinary odyssey through love and heartbreak, family and community, survival and renewal – and testament to the healing power of music.

It is also about his struggle to fi nd the will to keep living following a debilitating stroke, lung cancer and the sudden death of his life partner of 38 years, Ruby Hunter – a highly acclaimed singer songwriter in her own right.

Roach voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through song to become the legendary singer-songwriter and storyteller that he is today – beloved and respected by fans worldwide.

ANIMAL FARMshake and stir Theatre Co.

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multi-award winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorizes and satirizes communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield.

Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fueled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again.

Created by shake & stir and directed by Michael Futcher, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2020.

‘One of the most raw pieces of theatre produced in this country in recent decades. Don’t miss your chance.’

BACKBONEA Gravity & Other Myths Production

A high-octane spree of physical virtuosity, Backbone tests the limits of strength: Physical, emotional, individual and collective.

Staged with a deceptively DIY aesthetic and dispensing of trickery and distraction, this is circus that goes straight for the jugular and leaves no viewer unmoved.

Backbone is the culmination of all that’s gone before: A celebration of human connectedness and the meaning of strength, its athletic appeal is run through with a conceptual brilliance that elevates it to a new level.

Sexy but sincere, raw yet utterly disciplined, Backbone is proof you can’t do the impossible without spending a little sweat.

Backbone examines the various perceptions of what strength is, where it comes from and how it is measured. This frenetic celebration of human interconnectedness will test the limits of strength: physical, emotional, individual and collective.

THURSDAY 13 AUGUSTALBANY ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE PRESENTS

THE COMEDY OF ERRORSA Bell Shakespeare Production

Shipwrecked and separated 25 years earlier, two sets of long-lost twins miraculously find themselves in the same city on the same day. What could possibly go wrong?

The Comedy of Errors is a hilarious romp of swapped identities, misguided love, mistaken imprisonment and chaotic mishaps, leading to an unbelievably crazy day for bumbling twins.

At the heart of this tale of comedic misfortune is an old man searching for his lost children who has found himself in the fight of his life…to save his life. As far-fetched coincidences unfold, chaotic hilarity ensues and a man’s life could be saved — if only everything would go to plan.

Directed by Janine Watson (Romeo and Juliet, Ensemble Theatre’s Unqualified) this is a beautiful story about reunion, wrapped up in an evening of entertainment and laughter.

After a day of mistaken identity leading to unfair thrashings, wrongful arrests and false charges of infidelity, robbery, madness and even demonic possession, can the twins possibly reunite and live happily ever after?

‘Much, much hilarity, for this is genuinely, side-splittingly funny … Words cannot do this remarkable production justice, it really needs to be seen.’ CHRIS HOOK, DAILY TELEGRAPH

TUESDAY 15 SEPTEMBERALBANY ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE PRESENTS

BY A THRE ADOne Fell Swoop Circus

One Fell Swoop Circus bring their much-lauded production, By a Thread, to Albany Entertainment Centre for 1 show only, bringing with them their trademark 30 metres of white rope.

Using no nets or safety harnesses, By A Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics and spectacular skills from some of Australia’s best emerging and established circus artists. Seven performers combine dynamic acrobatic skills and poignant physical theatre in a choreographed exploration of tension; physical, emotional and relational.

By A Thread explores the relationship between trust and play on an innovative aerial apparatus—using long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrapped around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. Coming out of intense physical training at the National Institute of Circus Arts, Australia’s elite-level circus training institute, the By A Thread ensemble emerges with a cutting-edge contemporary circus piece on an innovative aerial apparatus.

The concert also features the popular Baroque work Battalia by Heinrich Biber, and the serene Fratres by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. THE X G ANG

As we are celebrating being TEN-lets celebrate the smaller folk of Albany who are also TEN(ish).

Our year will be full of new experiences for many. And we want to make it even more special for the kids who were born around the same time the AEC was born.

We intend on finding our young crew to help us make the celebration of the Albany Entertainment Centre’s tenth an exciting event!

Once we have our X Gang chosen we will be hosting several workshops for our gang to participate in throughout the year; getting them ready to co-host our tenth celebration Soiree.

They’ll learn basic skills in costuming, lighting, what goes on backstage-after all what side is prompt side? And why the heck is it called ‘Prompt side’ anyway. Gang members will get an idea of makeup and why its important to excentuate the eyes!! And the X gang will be proficient at finding their light, holding their microphone and even learn how to speak into that microphone.

So, do you want to be a part of the X gang? Go on- yarn with your folks and make sure they want you to be a part of this fabulous fantastic experience also! And then email me, Mand Markey at [email protected]

Tell me why you’d like to be a part of this wonderful group. Remember-this group of kids have to be 9, 10 or eleven(ish) during the year of 2020. Are you that kid?
