One o the frst things Idid as a 4-H summer internwas call a bunch o peopleId never met and ask themto volunteer as assistantsor project judging at thecounty air. The long listo spots to fll made itimmediately evident 4-His an organization built byvolunteer power. It runs onmiddle school kids who giveup a goofng around withriends to lead day campsand parents who takevacation days rom work tosupport the poultry project.

Volunteers rock. However, I think National4-H Week is an opportunetime or volunteers to inturn recognize outstandingsta members who keepthings together behind thescenes.

    There are the 4-Hadministrative assistants

    Miss coMMunicAtions

    Marie Zimmerman

clbrat natioal 4H w by thaig a 4H staf mmbrlike Jan, who was workingat Wright County whenI started interning. Shekept all the 4-H showprograms or county air inmeticulous order and wassure to send inormation tothe local paper. And whenshe was brewing hersela cup o tea in the breakroom, sometimes shedmake me one too, justbecause she knew it wouldbrighten my day.

Or Tarah, who had toenter a humongous stack oentry orms into a specialsotware program thatwould spit out county airproject tags, many o whichwould be discarded by kids.Meanwhile, someone wouldwalk in with a weird bug ina container to pass along tothe master gardener in theofce. Tarah wouldnt missa beat, sticking in the insect

in our tiny ridge to hangout with everyones lunch.

And then theres mymother-in-law, who was anadministrative assistantwhen teenage me wasbouncing o the walls in theMcLeod County ExtensionOfce, pretending toanswer the phones and datestamping my hands whilewaiting or a meeting tostart or a van to leave. Shenever tossed me out on myear, even when I obviouslyhad too much energy.

These days, I get to workwith Staci, who, when she iswildly busy, still takes timeto help me with my owndeadlines by identiyingsmiling 4-H membersin photos and corrallinginormation.

Putting in some o thecraziest hours are 4-Hprogram coordinators.

Growing up, that wasBernie. In addition to herregular duties, Bernierecruited or and helpedcoach our general livestock

judging team, spendingsummer evenings andweekends in hog barnsand cattle pastures. Whenthe team won a trip tonationals, she undraised. When Goldfsh crackersappeared in the county vanair vents, she tried not tonotice. Beore competition, she wrote personal notesin the ront o our judgingnotebooks. She expecteda lot o us, and we grewup to meet the challenge. When she quit her PC jobto work at the Universityo Wisconsin, I washeartbroken. But lookingback, she had given morethan any o us had a right toask or.

As an intern, my 4-H PCwas Katie. Working inside

the ofce, I saw how toughher job was. There are

times a PC has to deny astate air trip or wronglyfled paperwork, times shehas to mediate a disputebetween club leaders, times she has to listen to alaundry list o gripes thathave nothing to do withher the griper just didnthave anywhere else to turn.Still, Katie bubbled withlaughter, was inectiouslyecstatic about 4-H summercamp and kept her eyes onwhat was best or youthmembers. She was my frstreal boss, and her conductwas a shining example.

I also had the pleasureo seeing Jen in action. Shewas almost a Zen masterin the way she managed adozen elementary schoolkids all tussling or thesame glue and askingquestions that had alreadybeen answered. And when itwas time to take 4-H winnerphotos at county air, Jen

remained good natured butbrisk while lining up tired

    4-Hers.Unortunately, it is

easy to burn out on a jobrequiring such a level ocompassion, enthusiasmand diplomacy. As werein the midst o the searchor someone to fll the roleo 4-H PC or JacksonCounty, lets remember tosupport all our 4-H sta. They serve as role models, cheer leaders and educatorsor many youth in ourcommunity. And there areew jobs more importantthan that.
