Unit 21 4-H News

U of I Extension Clay, Effingham, Fayette, and Jasper County

Logan attends National 4-H Congress Illinois 4-H challenges youth to try new things, experiment in project areas they may enjoy, and explore opportunities around the state and country. This is exactly what Craig Logan of Altamont did when he submitted the Illinois 4-H award application last fall. His application, essay on communi-cations, 4-H impact story, and interview was one of 22 from across the state selected to receive a $1000 college scholarship or attend National 4-H Congress. Craig chose to attend National 4-H Congress. He was one of 13 Illinois 4-H delegates attending National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA November 23-27, 2018. For more than 98 years, National 4-H Congress has been a premiere nation-wide opportunity for 4-H members across America. Originally held in Chicago, the event is now held in the “Capitol of the South,” Atlanta, Georgia during the Thanksgiving break. National 4-H Congress is a five-day event that engages high school aged 4-H members in leadership, citizenship, global awareness, and inclu-sion. Participants not only have the opportunity to participate in state-of-the-art educational workshops and hear from world-renowned speakers, they also have the opportunity to network with other 4-H members from across the United States. When asked what it meant to win this trip, Craig stated, “A goal of mine is to be a better speaker and not be shy around people. Winning this trip reassured me that I am accomplishing what I set out to do. It was an honor to win.” The trip created opportunities to work on speaking skills and taught him to be more confident. Craig enjoyed listening to others speak and see what he needs to work on. He was inspired by their speaking skills and knows if they can present in front of a 1000 people he can speak in front of a few. Craig said it was cool meeting lots of 4-H’ers from other states and learning about their 4-H program. He even learned Puerto Rico has 4-H. He said he had no idea other country’s had 4-H. The network and bond he made with 4-H’ers from other states and the other Illinois delegates is ever lasting. Since returning home, the Illinois delegates have continued communicating and plan to meet within the next few months. “It was the best experience I have ever had in my whole life. It was amazing! It is life changing. I learned to be more confident, the skills I learned will help me in the future, and it is really fun!” says Craig. Because his experience was so positive he plans on applying to be on the design team for next year’s National 4-H Congress. Illinois delegates to National 4-H Congress are selected through the state 4-H Award Recognition process. To learn more about state and national 4-H opportunities contact your local extension office. If you would like Craig to speak at your club meeting on his experience at National 4-H Congress contact the Effingham County Extension office.

Help us understand youth!

The Youth Engaged 4 Change website has a fresh, new look with content that continues to inspire and empow-er young people to improve their lives and the world around them. Check it out @ https://engage.youth.gov. The site will help you FIND OPPORTUNITIES, including volunteering, internships, jobs, and leadership opportu-nities. FIND ANSWERS and explore resources on topics they care about, like mental health, relationships, educa-tion, and more. FIND INSPIRATION from Change Makers who are volunteering, acting as leaders and role models, advocating, and making an impact in the lives of others.

Many say it’s the best trip of their 4-H career. Join us for Citizenship Washington Focus! The national conference is open to 4-H members age 14-18 by May 1, 2019. The trip is June 8-15.
