School is out for Summer!

Make sure to mark your calendar with important dates and deadlines with-in this newsletter.

Make sure you have a 4-H shirts to wear at all the fair events you are in-volved in. There are 4-H shirts available at the Extension office these are the green ones with the white print. Remember all 4-H youth need to wear a 4-H shirt during judging times at the fair.

Reminder: Just because you verified an animal for fair (county or state) does NOT mean that it is a fair entry. The entry is the second step and for county this is done on paper and fee paid at my office by June 5th. For state fair entry process needs to be done by July 1st and this is done online. State Fair books and entry forms will be on the web.

FAIR ENTRIES ….DUE JUNE 5TH

The dates have been set for June 30-July 2, 2015 for a great three-day adventure at ISU for Iowa’s youth who have completed 8th –12th grades. Also open to all youth both current 4-H member and Non-4-H members. Youth who register by Monday, June 1 will receive a $150 scholarship that is being given by the Wright County Extension Council, this leaves the fee for youth to pay at a super low $25 per youth.

This is the same fee for both youth and adults and covers 2 nights of lodging, 7 meals, 3 keynote speak-ers, transportation for workshops and community service, facility rental, 2 dances, and a t-shirt, among other supports and services. When you look at your return on investment, it’s priceless.

2015 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference: Dare to Compare

Please remember to let the Fair ISU Extension office know what animals you will be selling at the Livestock Auction during the Fair. This is very important so that the sale bill will be correct and can be copied in a timely manner.

Also, remember to have proper container for buyers to take rabbits in. Always check with the su-perintendents before releasing your animal to the buyer. This means staying with your animals un-til it is released.

LIVESTOCK SALE REMINDER

EXHIBIT BLDG.

You’re encouraged to assemble a bucket of flow-ers for the county fair. Buckets/container (that can be outside) will be set around the fair grounds to add color and beautify the grounds. Be creative and plant a bucket or container. For rules check the fair book, you do not need to be enrolled in horticulture to exhibit in this class. 4-H’er can complete either the 4-H Exhibit Goal sheet or Horticulture Goal sheet both will be ac-cepted. This is a county only class.

In order to help ease the work load and allow some extra time for clubs to set up their club booths in the Exhibit Building, it will be open on Monday, July 6, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.

Check out the rules in your fair book the Challenge Classes: Photography, Food & Nutrition and NEW Challenge Class is the Duct Tape Challenge, for this class you do need to sign up ahead of time, forms are due June 5th Read over these classes and give them a try. There will be top awards given in each class.

CHALLENGE CLASSES

The object of this class is to provide the oppor-tunity for 4-H’ers to tell a story or idea visual about 4-H to the general public using the non-verbal form of communication on a poster. This is an exhibit that will be judged on Tuesday, July 7th in the exhibit bldg. For more infor-mation and rules check the fair book. No goal sheet is need for this exhibit, but the youth does need to complete the Poster Communica-tion Exhibit Report Form, which is in the fair book.

EXHIBIT VS PROJECT

Throughout the 4-H year, you learned and then demonstrated to your club how to make cookies. Next you make cookies for the 4-H Club bake sale and finally gave cookies to senior citizens. The learning and activities done during a year create the project.

The exhibit is the plate of cookies and the expla-nation of your achieved goal for them. Be sure to explain how you achieved your goal, what you learned as you worked to achieve your goal, and what you may do differently in the future.

The exhibit tells the audience what you learned while achieving your goal, a single idea of the pro-ject. The project enhances skills learned from ac-complishing a goal. For example, sharing your cookies with senior citizens enhances your citizen-ship skill, as you are being kind to those in your community.

Duplication of copyright material or design should not be used in a 4-H exhibit that is pre-sented as original work by the exhibitor. A copy-right design cannot be displayed in a public setting (fair) without permission being granted from the owner of the copyright. When permis-sion has been granted by the owner of the copy-right, the exhibit will be displayed and labeled appropriately. Those without permission cannot be displayed. 2015 Fair Theme: STEP RIGHT UP

$15 Challenge Clothing

All participants are challenged to search garage sales, consignment stores, Goodwill Stores, Salva-tion Army stores and others of this type and put to-gether an outfit for $15 or less. Receipts will be re-quired, although they can be handwritten receipts for garage sales. The $15 Challenge does not include shoes or accessories, although an individual partici-pant may choose to include either or both in the $15 Challenge. Garments purchased at end of sea-son sales at regular retail outlets would not qualify for the $15 Challenge category, but could be used for Clothing Selection. (The reason is to encourage alternate venues for shopping.) Guidelines for “an outfit’ include a one piece garment such as a dress or a two piece outfit consisting of a top and bottom. Check rules in fair book.

Clothing Event Judging

Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue, $15 Challenge, and change/modified outfits will have conference judging on Tuesday, June 23 from 9 am to 4 pm. For more information contact Jessica at the Extension office. Schedules and information will be sent out after fair entries are turned in. The youth will model and receive award placing on Thursday, July 9th dur-ing the County Fair.

CLOTHING EVENT INFO

Fashion Revue

A garment or outfit maybe the entrant has con-structed, hand knitted, machine-knitted, or cro-cheted. Check rules in the fair book.

Clothing Selection

Outfits may be selected and/or purchased from any source, including consignment shops, used clothing stores, etc. Clothing items which are home-sewn are not eligible unless the completed garment was pur-chased from a used clothing source. Clothing items which are custom sewn specifically for the partici-pant are not eligible. Check rules in fair book.

Changed or Modified

A garment maybe (constructed or ready-made) that shows major changes to make it more useful. Exam-ples include recycling a garment, design changes to a garment. Check rules in the fair book.

Share the Fun

Provides and opportunity for 4-H members to perform before an audience purely for the sake of enjoyment. This can be skits, songs, dances, stunts, short one act plays, plus other entertainment will be acceptable. Maxi-mum of 8 minutes in length. Check out the fair book for the rules and more information. Judging for Share the Fun will be held the evening, Thursday, July 9th on the free stage. Youth need to turn in an entry by June 5th.

Educational Presentation

Youth have an opportunity to demonstrate

their communication skills by presenting

knowledge, information or a process to gain a

desired response from the audience. So youth

can say, do or show something about a topic

that interests them and share with the audi-

ence. The audience will be sitting down and

ready to listen. Check out the fair book for

more information and rules.

Working Exhibits

Youth have an opportunity to communicate

and interact with an audience in an informal

way. The “audience” will be passing by the ex-

hibit and one of the challenges to the exhibitor

will be to attract their attention. Many stages of

the exhibit or project should be used. The best

subjects doing, feeling, tasting, smelling and

judging. Exhibitors at county fair should have

enough supplies to continue for half hour to

forty-five minutes period (suggested to have

enough supplies for 100). Check rules in fair

book and for more information

Pride of Iowa

Contestants select any recipe using at least

one ingredient which is an outstanding product

of Iowa, and use of a small appliance. Appli-

ance may be electrical or non-electrical. All

contestants must provide their own ingredients

and equipment. Each contestant must make a

poster which includes the recipe used, their

name and club’s name. Youth will prepare the

product as they would at home. There is no

speaking presentation involved. They will have

approximately 10 minutes to prepare their

product. All members will appear in 4-H uni-

form during presentation time. Hair will be

pulled back: a scarf or hair net must be worn

along with gloves. Sample of the completed

product will be brought to share with judge and

Extemporaneous Speaking

This contest is designed to encourage the de-

velopment of the life skill of communicating

with others through enhancing the ability to

think, to organize, to speak, and to answer

question readily. Participants will select one

topic to speak on, thirty minutes before the

youth and the general nature of the topic will

relate to 4-H. The participants will have 3o

minutes preparation time. Each speech shall

be not less than four more than size minutes

with five minutes additional time allowed for

related questions. For more information and

EXHIBITIONS OF BIRDS CANCELLED FOR 2015 DUE TO AVIAN INFLUENZA

Fairs, livestock auctions, swap meet and exotic sales will not include birds

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship today announced an order to cancel all live bird exhibitions at county fairs, the Iowa State Fair, and other gatherings of birds due to avian influenza. The Department’s order begins immediately, is effective through the end of 2015, and also prohibits live birds from being sold at livestock auction markets, swap meets and exotic sales. Iowa has over 25 million birds and more than 60 farms impacted by H5N2 highly-pathogenic avian influ-enza (HPAI). The purpose of the Department’s directive is to minimize the risk of potential further spread of the virus to other poultry. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Iowa Department of Public Health consider the risk to the public related to HPAI H5 infections to be very low. No human infections of the virus have ever been detected and there is no food safety risk for consumers. “We are asking producers and bird owners to increase their biosecurity measures and we feel this is a needed step to further minimize the risk of spreading the virus,” said Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey. "The scale of this outbreak has been unprecedented, so we think it is important we take every possible step to limit the chance that this disease will spread any further." Officials with the Department have spoken with leadership from the Iowa State Fair and Iowa State Uni-versity Extension and Outreach this week to discuss the situation. “We have been working in conjunction with our state veterinarian to monitor the situation,” said Gary Slat-er, Iowa State Fair CEO/Manager. “We strive to provide safe and healthy competition for all the animals at our State Fair and know this decision was made in the best interest of our exhibitors and our poultry industry.” “Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H's priority is youth and their learning experiences," said Mike Anderson, Extension 4-H State Livestock Specialist and State Fair 4-H Livestock Superinten-dent. "Some 4-H'ers will be disappointed that they won't be able to exhibit their poultry projects at fairs this summer, but we're exploring alternate learning opportunities to offer them at fairs and will share more details as plans develop. This is a great example to the public, fair-goers, and the consumer that the ani-mal health, animal well-being and the safety of the poultry industry is at the forefront of our young peo-ple’s practices. Through our annual Food Safety and Quality Assurance curriculum, we have educated youth for many years on these and other topics such as biosecurity and the potential for diseases to spread. The education and learning practices are being put into action in the real world." The Iowa Turkey Federation and Iowa Poultry Association both recommended that bird exhibitions be cancelled this year due to avian influenza. Iowa leads the nation in egg production and is in the top ten in turkey production. This year Relay for Life will be held in Belmond, on Saturday, July 25. Relay for Life committee is asking 4-H members to help donate bars/cookies. Cookies would like 2 dozen to replace the pan of bars. Pan of bars need to be 9X13 or larger in size.

Looking for 15 pans of bars, they need to be dropped off at the Extension office by 12 noon on Fri-day, July 24. Please mark what kind of bars/cookies.

If you could help with this ask by donating or have questions please contact Jessica - jnor-man@iastate.edu or 515-532-3453. This would be a community service for youth in food and nutri-tion project area, that youth could mark down in record books.

General/organizational, project, Shooting Sports and Clover Kids volunteers and assistants who have on-going direct contact with youth need to complete the Heart of Belonging training in order to continue to volunteer for 4-H at those levels.

The staff instructions and letters to be sent to volunteers with access directions are listed under the resources heading. There are two letters – one is formatted with links to be sent as an email. The second would be sent as a letter.

Important – The ISU Extension Moodle system doesn’t send out an email message with a user password. Ever. Howev-er, during the process of account creation, the system does send out an automated message for people to *confirm* their accounts. The message basically says something similar to …..” someone has created an account on our system using this email address. If it is you, please confirm this account by clicking on the link included in this message. If you didn’t create an account on our server, ignore this message.”

That being said, Extension IT reports that some Hotmail servers are blocking the auto generated messages at the server level – meaning the message never goes through. If this is the case, a person will need to contact Robin Brekke, rbrekke@iastate.edu or 515-294-8658, so she can manually complete their enrollment process. Cumbersome, but we have no control over what external email servers do.

In order to receive credit for completing the course, volunteers need to transfer the information recorded on the course worksheet to the online Qualtrics evaluation. The last question is their contact information – they need to fill that out. Once it is received, counties will receive an email from the State 4-H Office. July 1, 2015 is the deadline to completer the on-line training.
