With a new year, let’s aim for success! Now is the perfect time to think about all aspects of your 4-H projects. What new things do you want to try this year? What skills or knowledge do you want to develop? What goals do you need to achieve to be successful? Success is seen in the process through a project. As we learned in the last National Volunteer e-Forum, setting a goal of what you want to do with a project will help you stay on task. There are a few things to think about before setting a goal. To make sure your goals work for you, first ask yourself a few questions:

What do I want to HAVE, DO or BE in life? Dream big, but be specific.By WHEN do I need to get/do/become it? Set a date as a deadline. Why do I need it? Is my ‘reason’ big enough to motivate me?WHAT am I willing to give up or do in order to achieve it? Nothing comes free, I must be willing to sacrifice something to be successful. What’s the ONE THING I can do this year/month/week/day to make everything else easier? Focus on what matters the most and accomplish one step at a time.Who will be my coach or cheerleader? These are people I trust , who know my goal and are willing to help.Lastly, what is my goal?

Once you have thought about these questions for your goal, be sure to write them down in your 4-H Record Book! Sincerely,

Upcoming Events

Well, here we go again! The 2017 Holiday season is history and it’s time to get ready for another exciting year of 4-H fun!

It won’t be long and March Madness will be here and the oncoming of Family Learning Day and then Drama Festival. Details are posted about Family Learning Day. Maybe go outside of your box and explore a new project or learn more about your current one. The number one fear of most people is speaking in public. Why not try to overcome that by getting involved in the Drama Festival? What a great way to slowly overcome that fear. Last year we had 8 plays for the judges to watch. How about a couple new clubs get in on the fun! Let’s shoot for 10 plays this year. Think about it. The more competition there is, the more excitement is added. And how about the basketball tournament? That will be happening soon as well. Speaking of which, we need more tournament assistant directors for keeping score and stats. Anyone that can give up an evening or afternoon of their time for this would be a huge help! Actually, help will be necessary or the tourney may not happen. How about it? Contact Rose Rynish 757-6824 or email: [email protected]. What a better way to handle the winter blues by volunteering to help with a 4-H activity.

See you this Spring!

Sincerely,

Pat Rynish President, Leaders Association

YQCA - New this year…

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a national program and is replacing the MAQA (Meat Animal Quality Assurance) program. This new and interactive program provides youth a number of options for an annual quality assurance certification.

YQCA uses a new form of learning and is offered to youth in a couple of ways:• Online curriculum – a youth exhibitor annually will complete three interactive online modules and

corresponding quizzes. $12/person/year. Available 24/7 which allows exhibitors flexibility to take course at their convenience.• Face-to-face – Trainer led programs. Find the next program closest to you at yqca.org $3/person/year. To register for the program both online and face to face:• Log into http://yqca.org/ and follow the step by step instructions. Livestock Project Members (Beef, Swine, Sheep and Goat)Exhibitors must have one year experience showing a species at the county fair before being able to sell that species in their 2nd year (i.e. an exhibitor only exhibits a lamb in 2017, so the exhibitor may sell only a lamb in 2018 and cannot sell a steer or hog). All exhibitors in the market sale are required to attend one county-level 4-H project meeting per species (enrolled in beef, sheep, swine, goats - 4 species, 4 meetings). Anyone not attending will not be allowed to enter their animal in the sale. You may attend an educational meeting in another county; however, members must turn in a document signed by the instructor as verification of attendance (form found here, outagamie.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/projects/livestock/). YQCA does not qualify as an educational meeting for the livestock projects. YQCA is required for all livestock projects (beef, sheep, swine & meat goats). All meetings will be held at the FVTC, Appleton meeting rooms to be determined.· January 4, 7 pm· February 8, 7pm· April 7, 10am Educational project training is scheduled for March 17 at the Seymour Municipal Building• Swine – 8:00 am• Sheep – 9:00 am• Beef – 10:00 am• Goats – 11:00 am

If you have suggestions for livestock project training, please contact the Resource Leaders (found in Family Handbook). Your ideas are needed.

All State Fair Animal ExhibitorsFor 2018 Wisconsin State Fair will require YQCA for Beef, Sheep, Swine, Goats, Dairy, Poultry and Rabbits.YQCA has replaced MAQA and the National Pork Board Youth PQA program, both of which no longer exist. Wisconsin State Fair and other national exhibitions will require certification in YQCA for participation in 2018 events.
