The High School in Beachwood had lost its front

door.

It lacked a sense of entry, a sense of identity.

Like many such institutions, it suffered from too

many poorly done additions over the course of

time.

This was a transformational design:

- create a door

- create a welcoming lobby

- create breakout space for the auditorium

that killed the entry in the first place

- create a strong entry identity and focal

point

An elegant, 2-story spiral of classrooms sets the

conceptual and geometric framework for the

Beachwood Middle School. Located on a

gentle rise removed from a hectic

thoroughfare,

visitors are received by the extended arm of

the building’s spiral. Masonry weaving, with

two colors of norman unit bricks, are

developed into two patterns for the two

feature, large boxes of the program: the

Theater and the Gymnasium.

On the building’s interior, the spiral encloses a

modest courtyard next to the school commons

and library.
