APRIL WINE'S "LIVE"GAINS NATIONALLYAn initial shipping of over 25,000 unitsof "April Wine Live" (AQR 505), follow-ed by a steady flow of re -orders has result-ed in the fastest selling product yet in thehistory of Aquarius Records. National re-ports from retailers affirm reports ofacross-the-board success.

Much Productions granted permission toAquarius Records to proceed with the"Live" session, taken from the ElectricAdventure Tour in 1974. Gene Cornishand Dino Danelli, formerly of The Ras-cals, directed the recording in Halifax atthe Q.E.H. Auditorium and Dave Palmerof Electric Lady Studios in New York, engineered the session. Fedco Studios pro-vided a mobile recording unit that hadbeen used on remotes for the FilmoreTheatre. The album's master was taken toNew York for mixing at Electric LadyStudios.

In keeping with the mutual promotionof the album and trans Canada tour, Elec-tric Adventure, the "Live" album coverwas taken from a full colour poster usedto promote the concert appearances. Radioads for the tour dates were coupled withsimultaneous record ads and retailersfound that album stock was clearing inspite of heavy advance orders even beforethe group arrived in town. Televison andradio spots were also produced to follow

held a breakfast in the Stanley Park Ball-room for those interested and the breakfastwas followed by a tour of Little MountainStudios.

At noon, hospitality suites opened through-out the Bayshore Inn. From noon untilapproximately 6PM 13 rooms were in fullswing:Because of the shortage of suites, RPMfound itself in the International Suite ofthe Bayshore Inn, which was like havingbreakfast for six in the middle of MapleLeaf Gardens. At 6PM, most of the hospitality suitesclosed and the guests embarked on theirreturn flights, met with friends and businessassociates or broke up into smaller crowdsto see Vancouver.

The weather of the Friday to Monday periodwas sunny and clear with temperatures in thehigh seventies and no rain or clouds. Really,a delightful way to meet with the industryand see the paradise of Canada.

Was C9 a success? In this issue we get theviews of Canada's trade media writers. Inthe weeks to come we will feature the high-lights of many of the speakers.

We would like to thank everyone Whoattended and everyone who cooperated Inmaking our job easier.

WALT GREALIS'OPENING REMARKSAT COMMUNICATIONNINE

In view of the fact there has been somediscussion and controversy about the toneand "bitterness" of my opening remarksat C9, I felt it would be useful to the in-dustry to see the text in print. Anythingelse that may hove been said at the open-ing was incidental to the schedule of themeeting. The following is the body of myopening remarks.

Eight Communication Meetings ago, which would have made it Cl, therewere thirty people in attendance, Wehave come a long way since then. Itwasn't too tong ago when we held acommunication meeting here in Van-couver.

I can remember it well, because thetimes were turbulent for the radio andrecord business. One thing that camefrom that meeting was the fact that therewere problems.

Many of them have been solved sincethen, and today we have new problems,This is C9, and since RPM brought thismeeting about, I thought I would like towelcome you to Vancouver, or if you arefrom Vancouver, welcome you to thismeeting of easterners,I could say the music industry in Canadais working like clockwork and we couldall go home. But, like any industry, wehave our problems.

Ten and a half years ago, RPM weeklywas launched, The Idea behind a weeklytrade publication to the music and recordindustry in Canada was to develop andfurther the industry, We were anxious tocreate an industry in Canada that wouldbe more reflective of what Canadianswere doing and what Canadians wanted. We wished to bring the industry togetherby creating dialogue from east to west.We wanted to open the door to Canadianswho had talent so that they could growin Canada and not have to look to sup-

posed greener pastures. We were hopefulthat we could bring the industry togetherto work for one cause a bigger andbetter industry and a distinctive Cana-dian attitude toward the industry. In that ten and a half years, we can nowsay that we have failed dismally in doingany of these things.Over the past year, it has become obviousto me that the industry is even more di-vided today than it has ever been.If the east and the west were brought anycloser by RPM, it has only served thepurpose of making it even more evidentthat the two distant sections of the coun-try have become more aware of their dif-ferences and more bitter about what ishappening in each end of the country.I have the feeling that RPM is movingbackward, and with it the industry is be-coming embroiled in problems and con-troversy that has little to do with gettingdown to the business we profess to com-mand.

I say all this because over the next twodays the industry has an opportunity toget together and form an alliance basedon understanding and co-operation thatcould take us on to bigger and betterthings. For 363 days of the year, we all do busi-ness. I hope these two days can be spentin getting together and discovering theproblems and resolving them In this set-ting and in an atmosphere that can bemore productive than any sales meetingor any sales pitch that might normallybe expected at an event like this. With all the dirty laundry that passesthrought he doors of RPM, and how muchof it can we ignore and conceal, it dis-tresses me to read about all this in for-eign publications - for the whole world to see,It Would seem to me that the industrycan progress by very positive moves inthe seventies. The sixties endured manychanges, and they should quickly be dis-missed as being behind us.

I hope the industry isn't manufacturingnew problems for the seventies.

Take the next two days to get away fromwhat are called the "politics" of the in-dustry, and spend your time thinking pro-gressively about how good things couldbe, in the Canadian radio, record andmusic Industries if we put our minds togetting down to business.Instead of being used as a vehicle, RPMseems to used as the whipping boy ofthe industry,Starting here and now, the industry canturn over a new leaf. We can leave thewest feeling that there is a new camarad-erie and a new understanding of the prob-lems Unique to this part of Canada. Wecan return home with a new and positiveview of the west.Given this unique opportunity, we canlisten, learn, discuss and understand whatis happeriing in the west and work towardmaking the west a greater part of whatwe do in the east.Tonight, at a cocktail party here at theBayshore, all of you will have the oppor-tunity to look for answers. Tomorrow, all through the day, you will be able totour the hospitality rooms throughoutthe hotel and get to know each other. Ina few minutes, you will have the oppor-tunity to listen to four gentlemen whohave achieved success and respect in

their individual fields. Each one of these elements can only addto your knowledge, ability and under-standing of the Canadian music industryfrom coast to coast. The east isn't an island, nor is the west.Telex, telephone, trains, planes and some-times even the post office, all contributeto narrowing the gap.I hope this meeting, with all of its events, will also contribute to narrowing that gap,and any other gaps that lead to a lack ofcommunication and understanding.Someone said to me last week: "Youaren't going to make one of those hailfellow, well met speeches in Vancouver".I guess I've developed a reputation of beingtoo much of a pussy cat well nomore mister nice guy.If you weren't here to learn more aboutthe business, you'd find that Vancouver hasa great deal more to offer than a crowdedhotel meeting room.I feel like an amateur in comparison to thefour speakers you are going to hear today. You have already paid them a great tributeby gathering here.I can honestly say that I have learned muchfrom these past eight meetings, and the con-cept of being able to gather you here to lis-ten to them is outstanding and unique. Overthe next few hours, they will share with all ofus their knowledge, experience and thoughts.Tonight we will all have time to discuss theevents of the day. Flying back to Toronto from Vancouverlast weekend, following RPM Weekly'sC9 meet, I tried to collect my thoughts onthe magazine's latest attempt at producingmeaningful dialogue within the Canadianrecord industry. I couldn't - and can't -come up with any solid conclusions be-cause, as in past communication meetings,C9 did not bring out any form of across-the-board unification and quite oftenvisibly divided those participating. But,it had its interesting moments.A bitter disallusioned Walt Grealistelling of his unhappiness with currentCanadian record business practices andsadly admitting that RPM has been unableto cope with some of the problems divid-ing the industry was a bit of a shocker. Healso noted a failure of the CK IC's 30%content ruling to create a stronger domes-tic industry and called for a study to lookinto the possibilities for a percentage ad-justment in the content's quota. It's easy to understand Grealis' bitternessand tiredness. RPM magazine, once a cen-tre of attention and dialogue within thetrade, has been somewhat outgrown thesepast few years by an industry it did much

RPM 5110174 - - - 9

to create. The magazine has sadly becomea source of industry ridicule. Grealis, though strongly and evenly respected inthe business, seems to be deprived of neces-sary advertising revenue to run a strongbook. Without that Grealis is unable toturn the tide of opinion or improve thequality of the magazine which has deteri-orated badly in recent years. Boxed in byhis own good intentions, a lack of journal-istic grounding and alorm of homegrownsmugness, Grealis finds himself in a crip-pled role and the industry itself, dividedfor years, is unable to come to terms withhelping or killing off RPM.My opinion on the magazine and themeets runs hot -and -cold. Before the meet-ings start I'm usually depressed and dis-satisfied with many of the problemsabout to be discussed. After the speechesI generally leave in an air of excitement. It's sort of a "Win One For The Gipper".C9 was no exception. The speakers madethe day for me as usual.

Publishing before a general audience is avery difficult subject. Most of the roomdon't know and don't care about its finepoints and the speaker usually ends uptalking down to those who deal daily withthe subject. That was the case of thespeech by John Mills, Q.C. Before a smallworkshop Mills would have been ideal. Inthis large meeting, with people preparingto charge out to watch the Russian -Cana-dian hockey series, it was all ho -hum.The most interesting points were coveredin his breakdown of the costs of operatingCAPAC.Record World publisher Bob Austin islikely covered in other parts of this bookso I'd like to skip over his speech. The most interesting speaker of any of thecommunication meetings was Geoff Stirl-ing. He was outstanding touching onevery aspect of the Canadian music busi-ness and anything else that you might havequestions about. Why he talked for closeto two hours - or was allowed to - is a bitpuzzling. It was a bit much after an hourand I wondered if Stirling was a bit dif-ferent from some of the Canadian poli-ticians he repeatedly ridiculed during hisrambling, without notes, speech. The last speaker Paul Drew, unfortunately, said little of any importance and can bedismissed quickly for his contribution tothe meeting. His speech has been coveredmany times in numerous books dealingwith music and radio. The 1st day of speeches and the subsequentcocktail party that evening have alwaysplayed an important role in the success ofthe RPM meets. And, for me, they've beensuccessful. I've been able to listen to a widenumber of outstanding speakers in the pastfew years, make new business contacts, and re-establish ties with old friends. RPMis only offering the chance of industrycommunication, setting the stage. The suc-cess of the meets is an individual success. No two people feel the same about whatwas done last weekend in Vancouver. Justthe same, they had the chance to talk itover among themselves.

The future of upcoming communicationmeets - and RPM itself - is up in the air.C meets are expensive for companies par-ticipaing and entrants themselves arequestioning the importance of the dialogues. The magazine will continue and I'd like tosee it pick up the role as an industry forumthat Grealis keeps establishing for himselfeach meet and losing afterwards. The maga-zine could be an extension of the meetings.

This track record is not one RPM short of superbLAKEFIELD, Ont.

"Elton John", insists Ronnie Hawkins, "isgoing to surpass anything that's happenedso far in rock music ... the Beatles, theStones, Dylan, anybody. Elton is going to

( NUMBER ONE:4;;ivA WITH A BULLET

end up above them all, you just mark mywords."

And that good friends is not yer averageline of rock 'n' roll hype. Rompin' Ron hasbeen to the mountaintop and listened to thelion enough times to understand exactlywhere it's at. He knows most of what thereis to know about where this music's comingfrom (a valuable insight in an age riddledwith nostalgia). Not only is he one of theshrewdest assessors of talent that I've comeacross in nearly a decade on the road, hehas the added ability of judging potentialin its rawest forms. Winners are not thatdifficult to pick once the seeds are in bloom. The Hawk specializes in the exertion ofinfluence before the bud is formed, assist-ing in its fullest expression. Witness TheBand, of which one need say no more. Hawk-ins put that particular crew together in 1963and Bob Dylan should be forever grateful.Ron is a talent tout par excellence.

In his 22 -year hip -hillbilly career, the Hawkhas seen a million musicians come and go:understandably with that cunning Arkansasblood rushing through his treetrunk frame,he posesses the wherewithall to knit quitea few skeins of wisdom on the subject ofrock music. In fact I can't think of a singleindividual who knows more about rock thanRompin' Ron.Acquaintances and admirers, and even someinner associates, all busting their britchesover typical Hawkins' hilarity, often takefor granted Ron's unique perception oftalent. They're so consumed by their ownsense of humor that they fail to recognize

that Hawkins really does know what thismusic scene is all about.

Up at.his rustic Lakefield property theother evening, we were sitting around themansion fire snorting in those brittle scentsof approaching Autumn, pondering andwandering the corridors of tomorrow. JohnPrine had been pickin' and singing a fewsongs after a wiener roast by the lake andwe were feeling damn well mellow. TheHawk had his blue-jeaned leg firmly astridea marble table, looking as laid back as I'veever seen him.

The name of Elton John was raised amongthe crusts of conversation and Hawkinschomped on it like a hen uncovering a Junebug. "Now there is what I call a super star.Elton John is one of the greatest talentsI've ever heard. I reckon that right now hehas as many fans as the Beatles, the Stones,Led Zeppelin - maybe more than them allput together. To my ear, he and that lyricwriter of his (Bernie Taupin) have as muchtalent or more as anything that rock 'n' rollhas ever produced. A lot of people mightnot like hearing the sacred name of theBeatles in that context, but I think thatElton has proved himself to be every bit asgood as they were. And don't forget thathe's just starting." There were no signs ofdisagreement as the Hawk paused to pump ashot of Bourbon into his tea. Audio flashesof "Your Song", "The King Must Die","Where To Now St. Peter", "Friends","Madman", "Indian Sunset", "Rocket Man","Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters", "HaveMercy on the Criminal", "Blues For MyBaby And Me", "Danny Bailey", "I've SeenThat Movie Too", and so much more. Thetrack record is not one rpm short of superb."I saw a TV documentary on Elton a fewweeks back", Hawkins continues. "His state-ments in the interview demonstrated to methat he's certainly not the typical rock 'n'roller out to slap young ladies with wet fishor indulge in the noble art of black magic."He appears to treat his friends very wellwhich is rare for a young entertainer. the people I know who've met Elton sayhe's a magnificent person. John Prinehere says that Elton is beautiful and fantas-tic. I mean the guy is such a rarity these daysin the entertainment field. He's about asprofessional as you can get. He has his headscrewed on his shoulders properly, not likemost of these young whippersnappers.Elton John is a real super star in a stadiumfilled with pretenders."You can't take such accolades lightly. I'llconfess I've felt the same way about Elton'spresence for a couple of years now. It alwaysamuses me to hear endless explorations ofthe nonsensical ten-year theory, i.e. Presleyin '54, the Beatles in '64, something's goingto explode in '74. It definitely does not godown that way. There will not be the long-awaited new sensation in 1974 because thenext international super star has alreadybeen around for three or four years and hisname is Elton John. The theory is downthe drain. What surprises me is the media's reluctanceto shed its unflinching affection for thememory of the Beatles and to celebrate thenew ruler. After all the output of Elton andBernie has been quite simply staggering, from whatever viewpoint. Elton John'sproduction people have brought an entirelynew sound dimension to music for whichthey are still relatively unrecognized. Hislive concert sound also is at least the equalof any of his contemporaries.I appreciate that many of us are unable tosee the wood for the trees, but this case isparticularly convincing. What else doesthe man need to do to prove his worth? One can only hope that the ten -week NorthAmerican tour which Elton has recentlybegun will serve to bring home the truthabout his real standing in the hall of rockgreats. We're just going to have to get usedto the fact that although Led Zeppelin maybe the biggest group since the Beatles, EltonJohn is the most glowing ***s*t*a*r***.Ronnie Hawkins doesn't think his rankingis likely to subside in the near future either."In the long run, Elton John will still bethere when the rest are retired, dead from anOD, or admitted to the crazy farm. He hasn'tbeen trapped in the same bag. Every newtune has something different."I think that he'll be able to play just aslong as he wants to. And you can't saythat about many of these dudes runningaround calling themselves stars these days."Now there is a riff worth getting into.

NO ONEREALLY HASTHE BALLSTO TELL RPMby martin melhuishBillboard (Canada)

Communication 9 held in Vancouver thisyear intended initially as a confrontationwith some of the problems facing theWestern Canada music scene deterioratedgradually into a continuation of isolatedand behind the scenes discussions of theworth of RPM to the Canadian music indus-try as a whole. There is a genuine hostilityfelt against the Canadian music weekly inmany sectors of the industry and thoughmany murmurings and grumblings areheard over the clink of ice in drink glassesin hospitality suites and over lunches anddinners in posh restaurants no one reallyhas had the balls to come out and tell RPMexactly where they feel the publication isgoing wrong. If you are a subscriber or anadvertiser you have a basic right to voiceyour opinion forthrightly and openly, andconversely, it is the publication's obligationto listen and to effect any changes requestedby a reasonable majority of its critics. The problem here is, and this is a backhanded compliment to Walt Grealis' staturein this business, most people don't like tosay anything for fear that RPM may notbe kindly disposed to giving them equalspace in the magazine from that time on.Who says RPM is dead? The fact that it hasthe power to silence its critics without aword is certainly evidence enough of thepublication's continuing influence in theCanadian music industry. Before I go on I would like to make mystance on RPM very clear.:

(a) Editorializing, I feel, is one of the majorsins of a trade publication and RPM is theonly trade book that I have ever run acrossthat devotes so much of its editorial spaceto lecturing the industry on how to run itsbusiness. It is an affront to the competentsector of the industry to be tutored bypeople whose major function is publishing.(b) The RPM chart has proven time andtime again to be inaccurate and thereforepotentially damaging to the industry as awhole. In defence of RPM though, theyhave done an incredible job given the amountof money and personnel that they have attheir disposal to handle this tedious chore.(c) Stan Klees' association with RPM hasbeen a constant topic of conversation bypeople in the industry. Many do not believethat his relation to the publication is onlyon a freelance basis. It might be helpful ifhis status was explained fully to the indus-try so as to once and for all put an end tothe conjecture and behind -the -back jibesthat have arisen from this situation. Those I feel are the main issues involvedhere. They are certainly the ones that Ihave heard spoken of most often in thesecurity of the places I listed above.Alright, now what about Western Canadaand its unique problems?Well, I can only state the obvious here. There have been two major internationalacts emerge from this area in the last yearBachman -Turner Overdrive and Terry Jacks. Both acts were conspicuous by their absencefrom most of the proceedings at C9. True,Terry Jacks spent some time watchingthe speakers on the opening day but it'sreally hard to interest someone who hashad multiple international hits in a discus-

sion on the 30 percent Canadian contentlegislation. Of course, BTO and Jacks wereout taking care of business rather than chug -a -lugging a drink or glad-handing it at ahospitality suite. For those registrants who came withbusiness in mind it was a good opportunityto size up for themselves the stature ofthe industry in Western Canada cuttingthrough the hype to concrete sales figuresand achievements. Those people might haveactually come back with a clear picture ofwhat their tact will be with that particularmarket in the coming year rather than ahazy rememberance of an X-rated boatcruise of the Vancouver shore -line.

THANKSFOR C9!Sept. 23/74Just a note to say thanks for C9. I am sureDenali Records and Bulrush Music benefitedgreatly from the Communications Meeting.I am sure the music industry of Canadacertainly appreciates your efforts in bring-ing together people from all over Canada tocommunicate at a meeting such as this.Doug HuttonPresidentDenali Records Ltd.Edmonton, Alta

CRTC REPLIES TO"RED TAPE" CHARGEThe Canadian Radio Television Commissionhas dismissed claims by CJAZ Radio, a groupof handicapped people attempting to getinto radio, that the North Vancouver grouphas become enmeshed in the Commission's"red tape". In a letter to Jack Banford, general manager of CJAZ, the Commission'sGuy Lefebvre points out that formal applica-tion has not been made to the CRTC byCanadian Wirevision Limited, the cablecompany which expected to carry the CJAZprogramming. While Banford admits that nosuch formal application has been made, hemakes reference to a number of oral sub-missions made to the CRTC by CanadianWirevision in the past. The crux of the problem is that underpresent regulations, the owner of a cablelicense must assume direct responsibility forthe programming he carries. ApparentlyCanadian Wirevision is unable to assume theresponsibility and CJAZ doesn't care torelinquish it anyway.By way of suggesting alternatives to thisimpasse, Lefebvre suggested that CJAZmight make application for an "over -the -air" AM or FM station in greater Vancouversimilar to the set-ups now established byCJVB and Vancouver Co-operative Radio. While Banford sees such an "over -the -air"proposal as attractive, CJAZ has insufficientfunding for the costly processes of applica-tion and construction.

RADIO THEWORLD OUTSIDEby John Watts

Most of us, programmers included, tend tothink of radio as a diversion; something to belistened to casually as a means of passingthe time, or making a task more pleasant. We turn it on without really thinking whyand seldom treat it as the technologicalmarvel it really is. Even those of us notover thirty can remember the day whenradio was the focal point of an evening athome. Who can forget "Gunsmoke" and"Johnny Dollar"? Who can forget the thrillof sitting around that great big hunk of furni-ture with the glowing green eye, listeningto Silver gallop loudly into the distance.

Television, of course, changed all that. Nowwe can see Matt and Kitty and Tonto. Inthe process, radio abdicated its positionas entertainer and informer and becamea mere whimper in the sounds around us.That goes for those of us in urban centreswhere movies, television stations, recordsand concerts fill our minds with sight andsound, but what'about those people out inthe boonies, those upon whom the god ofcommunications has yet to bestow hisbounteous gifts.Out there, in the remote areas of the Prairies,in the lumber camps of British Columbia, inthe great Canadian Arctic, radio is still avital part of everyday life. The weatherreport has real down to earth significance, the news may be the only source of quick, accurate information, the music may well beall the entertainment there is.

Out there, away from the electronic overabundance of the cities, radio plays animportant part in every day life. We, who live in the big cities, are prone tochuckle a little at the five hundred watterswhich dot the map. With our sophisticatedprogram research and huge signals we seelittle to be admired out there, but the truthof the matter is that those piddly littlestations and their hundred dollar a week boys are doing more for the handful of hicks wholisten than we do for the terns of thousandswho, we are told, tune in faithfully each day.Out there, progress has not reached thepoint that, as Marshall McLuhan would haveit, the medium has become the message. Outthere, the medium and the message are stilldistinct from one another. While in Van-couver or Calgary or Toronto it is how thenews sounds and not what it says thatcounts, out in Dogpatch and Hogswallow, intros and extros and quick turns of phrasemean little. It is what is being said thatcounts.

KEITH HAMPSHIRE HOSTSMUSIC MACHINE - CBC-TVCBC-TV's show "Music Machine", returnsto the air this fall, but with a difference. The show will be called "Keith Hampshire'sMusic Machine", and will be telecast Wed-nesday'nights at 7:30PM, instead of lateSaturday afternoons. The show is also broadening its appeal, byusing more Hit Parade material, performedby the recording artists and groups whomade the number a current chart -topper,and by steering away from last year's empha-sis on jazz and soul. The show will continueto be produced and written by Garry Ferrierand Aubrey Tadman, with additional mater-ial supplied by Peter Mann, and studio direc-tion by Ron Meraska.

or

As the name of the shows implies, Calgary -born Hampshire will be the singing host ofeach half-hour edition. Eric Robertson, thekeyboard -playing leader of Local 149, theseries' new eight -member back-up band, andwho has previously played behind Hamp-shire as a musician on the singer's handfulof A&M Records released hit singles, willlook after musical arrangements. There'llalso be a new six -voice group called Libera-tion, which includes Roy Kennar, formerlyof The James Gang. The producers of theshow are introducing a spot called "TheBest of ... " which will have Hampshiresinging a medley of golden -oldie hits datingback to 1957.

Scheduled guest line-up for the seriesinclude such bands as Lighthouse, Fludd,Greaseball Boogie Band, April Wine,

CKDM Dauphin,Manitoba, however, has decided to changetheir sound to one of "concept" radioprogramming for the upcoming fall andwinter seasons. The change has been in-fluenced by the station's youthful, andambitious staff. The new format has been put together byon -air personalities Jerry Agar, Bob Weid-man, Robert Ouimet, Les Jankiewicz,Brian Leskiw and Mike Zaplitny. Includedwill be one hour musical specials, sixnights a week, promoting school activities;a special music and story -time programfor children on Saturdays; a revampedseries of religious music programming;and the use of quality tapes submittedby previously unknown artists.Music for evening specials are to be cata-gorized as: Classical (Tues 8-9PM), folk(Wed 8-9PM), instrumentals (Thurs 7-8PM),days gone by/comedy (Thurs 8-9PM), pro-gressive rock (high quality rock musicfrom outside the realm of the Top 40) tobe heard Fridays from 7 to 8PM, rhythmand blues/soul (Fri 8-9PM), jazz (Sat 8-9PM), and opera/motion pictures/Musicals(Sun 8-9PM). A minimum of announcerpatter will add an FM feeling to the spe-cials. The station's all night show, "Night-fall" will concentrate on easy listening/instrumental offerings.Obviously aiming their signal at the younglistener, CKDM on -air personalities willbe plugging school activities throughoutthe day i.e. dances, sporting events, clubmeetings etc.The Saturday morning "kids" special willair songs, stories and characterizations ofpopular comic strip personalities and willlater spawn a jock contest, using top en-tries on the air.The religious programming segment hasn'tbeen restricted to Sunday mornings. Thestation has scheduled "Hymns For TheTime" to be used as a daily, early morning

happening "to spiritually and musicallyuplift our listeners".CKDM's airwaves will be used to bringlocal talent to the attention of listenersthroughout the area. They will present aseries of "Talent Nights" whereby they willair good quality tapes and records submittedby artists. These tapes will be aired duringthe all night show.Returning to CKDM are two long-timefeature programs: Jack Henderson's "OpenLine" and Helen Henderson's "Time ForHelen"both aired throughout the weekdays.

CKDM's regular schedule of MOR (pop)music will continue its regular schedule inthe morning with country in the afternoon, contemporary rock in the evenings and theopen format all night show. The stationproudly maintains a 40% or better Canadiancontent in musical offerings.

GEORGE BALCAN HOSTS"IT'S YOUR MOVE"/CTVGeorge Balcan is now handling hostingduties on "It's Your Move", a show basedon the game of charades, telecasting week-days on CTV. Unlike the parlour version, however, there are no standard signs. Play-ers are on their own, and have to transmita phrase using whatever bizarre antics arefound necessary.Balcan, in the field of broadcasting sincethe age of eighteen, got his apprenticeshipin a local radio station in Dauphin, Mani-toba, where he was raised, graduating tolarger markets like Winnipeg and Hamilton, and finally Montreal, where he is now withCFCF, and considered to be that city's num-ber one morning man. He formerly hosted"Our Friends, The Flickers", a CBC radiomovie trivia panel show, and is presentlyweekday afternoon host of "Matinee WithGeorge Balcan", a two hour feature movieshow.

CHAM/HAMILTON INROCK CONCERT BATTLE

CHAM/Hamilton recently took on theHamilton City Fathers in an attempt tobring a free rock concert to the people ofthat city. Robert W. Wood, ProgrammeManager of the station, requested permis-sion to stage the concert starring EdwardBear, a Canadian light rock act, in GagePark. His reply was a flat refusal from theParks and Recreation Committee, becauseof the noise factor in neighboring com-munities. CHAM then approached theauthorities in the neighboring communityof Stoney Creek, and again received a refusalbecause "rock concerts attract undesirableelements."

CHAM then resorted to editorializing onthe air, pointing out that rock had, in fact, appreared in Gage Park, most recently withthe Trudeau Bandwagon (A Foot In Cold-water), and that a recent philharmonicconce,rt, with synchronized cannon for the1812 Overture, could not exactly be classi-fied as quiet. Listeners were invited to sub-mit their comments, and the phone responsewas great, with callers asking what theycould do to help. CHAM also posed thequestion "were the city parks for the enjoy-ment of all the population, or just a selectfew approved by the City Fathers?"

CHAM then approached Lloyd D. JacksonSquare promotion department, since rockconcerts had been held there in the pastwithout incident, but found that the cityalso controlled that area, and would haveto be approached again for permission tohold the concert. Finally, after much hassel-ing, Wood was approached by a member ofthe board, who suggested that he come downto the next sub -committee meeting with atape of Edward Bear to play, and be avail-able for questions. Wood appeared, per-mission was granted, and the concert wasset for August 29th. An orderly crowd ofbetween 7 and 12 thousand assembled inGage Park, after only a little over two daysof publicity, and a good time was had by all.

CKFM'S BANAS EMCEESVICKY LEANDROS SHOWA capacity crowd gathered in Massey Hall,Toronto (25) to watch a diminutive Greekbundle of dynamite, by name Vicky Lean-dros, do her thing. From her arrival onstageto her departure, the audience was com-pletely hers. No invitation was needed forthem to join her in song and hand -clapping.Her repertoire, comprised of Greek, Ger-

man, French and English numbers, includ-ed such hits as "When Bouzoukis Played","The Love In Your Eyes", "Hey, JoeMcKenzie", and her latest single, "Henry,Let's Go To Town".The show was scheduled to coincide withher "Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chan-

son" winner, of two years ago, "ApresToi", but the audience thought other-wise. Two thunderous standing ovationsbrought Ms. Leandros back on stage, thefirst time to perform "Those Were The Days",initially in German, then English and finallyFrench., the second to do a bilingual versionof "Amazing Grace". After this rendition, emcee for the evening, Carl Banas of CKFM/Toronto, presented the star with a basketof flowers, and she bid the audience goodnight. Backing her for this concert, herfirst ever in Ontario, were Frazer and hismusicians, the Kennedy Choir, and herpianist/arranger/composer, Nick Monroe, whoshe insisted share the applause and spotlightwith her several times during the course ofthe evening.
