Metropolis GZM. The first Metropolis in Poland
The 41 cities and municipalities, approx. 2.3 million inhabitants, and about 240 thousand companies and enterprises that make up GZM produce 12.4% of Polish GDP and 14% of exports.
The Metropolis sees its role primarily as that of an inte-
grator, inspirer and coordinator. It is an active participant
in the process of building a knowledge-based economy;
coordinating the cooperation of entities operating
in the Metropolis; and facilitating development of the
key industries in the region.
In terms of economic potential, human capital, lifestyle, cost effectiveness and connectivity Katowice is currently ranked #1 in the prestigious „Polish Cities of the Future 2019/20” ranking published by the Financial Times.
A symbol of Polish economic success and
development, Katowice has the 16th highest
GDP among cities in the entire European Union.
It is home to over 47,000 business and allocates
as much as 27% of the city’s budget is allocated
to infrastructure investments. It is also home to
the Katowice Special Economic Zone - a 2,614 ha
area that’s drawn more than 7.5 billion Euro
in investments and created over 75,000 jobs.
The city is looking to provide a sustainable
development for its citizens – in a technological,
cultural, social and economic sense. It is focused
on utilizing the potential of its residents in carrying
out the “Katowice 2030 strategy”. The four main
pillars of the of the aforementioned approach
include: intelligence, innovation, integration
and internationalism.
Katowice - a city for the future!
It was one of 30 European metropoles to sign
the Rome Declaration at the European Metropolitan
Authorities (EMA) Forum. The declaration emphasized
emphasised that key role played by metropolises in
supporting European cities as they fight against the
issues related to spacial planning, low-stack emissions
and public transport.
