A Servant and a Friend Jesus has an incredible way of elevating people. In John 15:15, He told His disciples: “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; for I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.” Jesus is still calling us to the dutifulness of a servant and the intimacy of a friend. In our superficial world, we tend to call any acquaintance “a friend.” I am grateful to be on a team which requires true servant-friends to work together in ministry. C.S. Lewis wrote: “Romantic lovers characteristically look into each other’s eyes, while friends stand side-by-side and look at something that is important to both of them.” I am grateful to have worked these last 20 years with a true servant of the Master and a loyal friend who has stood beside me, as well as covered my back – Pastor Jimmy Hill. Furthering Christ’s kingdom has been our focus. Jimmy has felt led to retire, having served in various capacities on our church staff for 20 years. This is his last weekend in his official capacity as Pastor of Single Adults and Single Parents. With hard work and compassion, he has provided biblical help for the hurting. Jimmy is a humble man of godly character. Jimmy first came to us to take care of our accounting and finances, then quickly discovered that we had technology and information system needs. He moved us down the road to a place where we could add more staff, administer the gifts of God’s people in a more effective way, provide medical benefits for our staff, and be updated in an increasingly technological world. Jimmy also pioneered our work with Single Parents, Benevolence Ministry, Disaster Relief, Car Care, financial planning and management. He has freed all of the pastors and me as Senior Pastor to concentrate on our giftedness and callings. I trust that you will come to the reception this weekend, send an email or drop a note of appreciation to the Hills. They “are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation” (Acts 16:17). In 2010, I preached a message entitled, “Get’er Done.” I pray that we will all be willing to do whatever God tells us, remembering that it is the handy tool that gets used the most. We love you, Jimmy and Deborah, and are grateful that you will still be in our church and serving as health and the Lord’s leadership allow. Like C.S. Lewis’ analogy, let’s keep looking to the Lord and His direction for new staff. That’s really important!
