G25A – 3U CompactPCI Serial Intel Xeon D CPU Board

The G25A is a high-performance multicore CPU platform based on Intel’s Xeon D-1500System-on-a-Chip (SoC). The G25A is the first member of a new family of CPU boards forCompactPCI Serial specifically designed for high data bandwidth based on PCIe 3.0, PCIe2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet via the backplane. The G25A provides high data bandwidth onthe front panel via two 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces on RJ45 or M12 connectors. TheG25A paired with I/O cards can be ideally used for transferring data from and to storagemedia, the Internet via LTE, WiFi, copper or optical Ethernet. Its up to 16 processor coresand built in Intel VT-d and VT-x support make the board ideally suited for virtualizationapplications.

Serial interfaces at the rear I/O connectors are 2 USB 3.0, 6 SATA interfaces, four PCIExpress x1 links, two PCI Express x4 links and two PCI Express x8 links and four GigabitEthernet interfaces.

The memory configuration of the G25A includes a state-of-the-art fast DDR4 DRAM withECC which is soldered to the board to guarantee optimum shock and vibrationresistance. A microSD card device which is connected via a USB interface offers space foruser applications or as a local boot medium.

For system security, a Trusted Platform Module is assembled on the board.

A board management controller provides thermal supervision of the processor and awatchdog for the operating system.

The G25A operates in Windows and Linux environments as well as under real-timeoperating systems that support Intel's multi-core architecture.

The AMI Aptio BIOS was specially designed for embedded system applications.

The G25A comes with a tailored heat sink within 4 HP height. All components aresoldered for protection against shock and vibration according to applicable DIN, EN orIEC industry standards. The G25A is also ready for coating so that it can be used in humidand dusty environments and has a guaranteed minimum standard availability of 7 years. These features make the G25A perfectly suited for harsh environments.

2.3 Supervision and ManagementThe G25A provides an intelligent board management controller (BMC) with the followingmain features:

System watchdog

Operating hour counter

Power cycle counter

Temperature measurement

Voltage supervision

Error state logging

The watchdog device monitors the board on operating system level. If enabled, thewatchdog must be triggered by application software. If the trigger is overdue, thewatchdog initiates a board reset and in this way can put the system back into operationwhen the software hangs.

The watchdog uses a configurable time interval or is disabled. Settings are made via aMEN software driver.

The G25A uses a temperature device to measure the local board temperature. Thetemperature device is connected to the BMC via I2C, and is supported by the firmware.

MEN provides the following dedicated software tools for the board controller and thetemperature device:

Board Controller: xm01bc_ctrl

Temperature measurement: smb2_eetempBoth tools are included in the MDIS system package for Linux as well as in the 13y021-70SMBus driver for Windows

2.3.1 Status LEDsThe G25A has two general status LEDs at the front panel which are controlled by theboard controller using SMBus commands.

2.3.1.1 Board Status LEDThe yellow status LED shows board status messages. The LED is controlled by a GPIO pinof the board controller. It is switched on when the BIOS starts, switched off when theboard is switched off and flashing when the board is in stand-by (S3) status.

In case of a board failure, the LED displays the following error messages:

Table 3. Error codes signaled by board management controller via LED flashes

2.3.1.2 Hot-Swap LEDAfter system shutdown or if the system is in S4 or in S5 state, the hot swap LED lightscontinuously.

If the system is plugged into the system slot and in S0 state or in S3 state, the boardcontroller ignores the hot swap switch.

If the hot swap switch is closed while the hot swap sequence is in progress, the boardcontroller stops flashing the hot swap LED and no longer waits for system shutdown. Ifthe hot swap switch is closed after system shutdown, the board controller initiatesPower Resume.

If the hot swap switch is open during power-up, the board controller delays the power-up sequence and lights the hot swap LED until the hot swap switch is closed.

2.4 Reset Events and Reset BehaviorThe G25A is equipped with a reset button which is recessed within the front panel andrequires a tool, e.g. paper clip to be pressed, preventing the button from beinginadvertently activated.

During normal operation the LED can be switched on and off using the MEN driver for the board controller. See MEN’s website for further information.

2.5 Real-Time Clock (RTC)The G25A includes a real-time clock inside the processor. The G25A includes a real-timeclock connected to the processor as a system RTC. The RTC has an accuracy ofapproximately 1.7 seconds/day (11 minutes/year) at 25°C. The real-time clock device isconnected to the CPU via SMBus.

For data retention during power off the RTC is backed up by a supercapacitor. Thesupercapacitor gives an autonomy of approx. 72 hours (+/-20%) when fully charged.Worst case derating is -30% after 1.67 years at +40°C board temperature.

For retention of time/date data after a power off of more than 8-10 hours the RTC canoptionally be backed by a battery.

Due to the RTC’s reduced current consumption, the data retention time supported by thesupercapacitor or battery can be increased considerably compared to the RTC integratedin the CPU.

Please note that the real-time clock integrated in the processor is not used. Configuringthe date and time through the means provided by the operating system does not setthe system RTC.

You can set the system date and time through the UEFI firmware.

If you use dedicated MEN driver software supporting the system RTC, you can use thefunctions provided there to set the system date and time also via software.

2.6 Trusted Platform Module (TPM)A trusted platform module for authenticating the hardware to ensure platform integrityis available on the G25A. The TPM module is compliant to the TPM v2.0 specification.

2.13 CompactPCI Serial

2.13.1 Backplane Filling OrderThe CompactPCI Serial architecture, a simple star combined with a complete mesh forEthernet, functions without switches and bridges. There is a system slot and up to eightperipheral slots with congruent pin assignments.

The CompactPCI Serial standard supports a maximum of 2 PCI Express x8 links (fat pipe),6 PCI Express x4, 8 SATA, 8 USB and 8 Ethernet interfaces.

To guarantee maximum compatibility between different board manufacturers and tooptimize the usability in CompactPCI Serial systems the order to implement theinterfaces is defined. PCI Express, USB and Ethernet are ascending; SATA/SAS isdescending. This means that the first PCI Express link and the first USB and Ethernetports from the system slot are led to the first peripheral slot, the second to the secondetc. and the first SATA interface to the eighth peripheral slot, the second to the seventhetc. See .Figure 3, CompactPCI Serial backplane with filling order on page 32

2.13.2 Implementation on the G25AThe G25A supports six SATA interfaces, two USB 3.0 ports, four PCI Express x1 links, twoPCI Express x4 links, two PCI Express x8 (PCI Express fat pipe) links and four GigabitEthernet ports on the backplane.

The interfaces are accessible at the following slots (see Figure 3, CompactPCI Serialbackplane with filling order on page 32):

Six SATA interfaces on slot 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9

Two USB 3.0 interfaces on slot 2 and 3

Two PCI Express 3.0 x8 links on slot 2 and 3

Two PCI Express 3.0 x4 links on slot 4 and 5

Four PCI Express 2.0 x1 links on slot 6, 7, 8 and 9

Four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces on slot 2, 3, 4 and 5

Please read the following paragraph carefully to make sure which interface is supported on which slot on the backplane.

Refer to the CompactPCI Serial standard PICMG CPCI-S.0 for detailed information regarding the rear I/O connectors.

2.13.3 Using the G25A as a Peripheral BoardThe G25A is designed to be a system or a peripheral slot CPU in a CompactPCI Serialsystem. Due to that it is possible to use more than one G25A board within a CPCI-S.0system to build a redundant system or a cluster with more processing power. Thecommunication between the boards is done via Ethernet in this case and the other high-speed interfaces cannot be used. The G25A cannot be booted via SATA in such aconfiguration.

In peripheral mode the following interfaces available on the CPCI-S.0 connector aredisabled by the BIOS automatically:

PCI Express

USB

SATA

SMBus

SGPIO

All control signals which are only available for system boards

The BIOS detects if the board is inserted in a peripheral slot by monitoring the SYS_EN#pin on CompactPCI Serial connector P1.
