PASTOR’S CORNER

Everyone is Welcome

For people who believe in Jesus, death is indeed an ending, a time for

grief. But it is also a beginning, bringing the one we love into hope

and lasting peace, and freedom from pain and sorrow. In today’s

Gospel this is what Jesus was trying to tell the Saducees, who did not

believe in an afterlife. The Saducees refused to believe him, but as

Christians we take his words to heart. Our Book of Remembrance

is like the empty tomb of Jesus: a reminder that the one we love has

gone before us into new life, a life we can only imagine until we, too,

see it face to face.

This is what we celebrate at every wake and funeral at this church.

Even though there are tears, we believe that for those who have died,

death is not the end. We believe that this life has prepared them to

see the Risen Lord. Indeed, it is our hope that all our loved ones who

have died have risen with Jesus into new life.

Listen again to that last statement: it is our hope that all our loved

ones who have died have risen with Jesus into new ife. Sadly,

misconceptions at the time of a death can get in the way of

celebrating this truth. It breaks my heart when I hear about families

who never contacted us when a loved one died, afraid that we would

turn them away. Please listen carefully: here at Prince of Peace, we do

not turn anyone away who is dying, or anyone who wants to celebrate

the funeral of a loved one in this church. If anyone has told you

otherwise, they are very, very wrong.

Some people think that at the time of death, the church will pass

some kind of judgment on a person and declare that the person is

not worthy of a church funeral or burial. This is not true. We have no

way of looking into a person’s heart and soul and making any such

judgment, and we have no desire to try such a thing. Only God can

see into the human heart.

Let me make myself clear. People have been afraid to call us when the

person who has died was married outside the Church, or the person

died because of suicide, or had AIDS, or the person was a family

member who was not Catholic, or perhaps some other complicated

situation. None of these are reasons to turn anyone away. Those who

have died are in the hands of God. No human person and no

institution can judge their status in relationship to the Creator.

3rd Sunday of Lentwww.catholicsteward.com

In today’s Gospel Reading from John, we hear the story of

the Samaritan woman whom Jesus confronts at the well.

Jesus and His Apostles are traveling from Jerusalem in the

south to Galilee in the north. The quickest route, although

inconvenient in some ways, was through Samaria. Jesus’

followers went to the nearby village of Sychar to

procure food while He sat tired and thirsty by what is

called Jacob’s Well.

It was about noon, the hottest part of the day, and a

Samaritan woman came to the well to draw water. Jesus

breaks three Jewish customs in His exchange with the

woman. First, He spoke to a woman, something forbidden

to men with strange women; second, she was a

Samaritan woman, a group with whom Jews did not

normally mix; third, He asked her to give Him a cup of

water which would have made Him ceremonially unclean

from using her cup or jar. The woman was rightfully

shocked.

However, Jesus told her that He could give her “living

water.” At that time some spring water was carbonated

and it seemed “alive” as it bubbled up from the ground, so

it was called “living water.” Jesus meant that the water He

!"#$#%&'()&(*+,#&+-&(&%+"#$#-.&'(/&0#1(2)#&+.&1!2*%&0!.3&

give life and quench spiritual thirst.

Although the whole situation is amazing to the

woman, she is particularly struck by how much Jesus

knows about her. She reports to her fellow Samaritans

“He told me everything I ever did.” That is not what she

found so surprising though. What truly astonished her

was that in spite of that knowledge, Jesus still loved her.

Jesus loves us as well, despite our may shortcomings and

sins.

4 Prince of Peace

We have two children: Tanner, 5, who attends preschool at

POP, and Clara who will be 3 in April and attends The Bell

Center. In August of 2016, we received terrifying news

regarding our daughter Clara. After searching for answers

to many puzzling symptoms, we were told that Clara was

slowly dying of a brain disease for which there is no current

cure. We were devastated and heartbroken at the thought of

watching her slowly fade away and likely losing her before

she reached the age of ten. However, no sooner than we

received this news we were given solid reason for hope.

Shortly after Clara was diagnosed with GM1, we discovered

that the world’s leading researchers of this disease happen to

be here in Alabama at Auburn University and have

successfully CURED the disease in animals. The only piece

missing to making this treatment available to go to human

trial, and potentially save Clara’s life, is funding. Since this

discovery of a promising cure, we have worked tirelessly to

raise funds for the Cure GM1 Foundation in hopes to save

Clara’s life before time runs out. This treatment could be the

end to this devastating disease and prevent any parent from

ever having to receive the news that their child is dying of

GM1. For more information on Clara’s story and GM1, please

visit www.ACureforClara.com. Look for the Bragg Family

next weekend, March 25 & 26, as they speak after all the

Masses.

steal our attention away from the idea of working out.

Over time what I realized was that the spirit was trying to help me develop habits of the inner life. We all have habits of the

outer life, good and bad. And we all have habits of the inner life, good and bad. Negative habits of mind, body, and spirit are

easily formed. Positive habits of the mind, body, and soul require great intentionality and persistence. But once gained they

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering

God’s Call in Prayer

A group of parishioners, members in one of our many ministries, decided to work through

the Matthew Kelly book, “Resisting Hapiness,” together during the weeks of Lent. They

developed a schedule to cover certain chapters each week. They meet and share thoughts

on each week’s reading. This helps to facilitate reading the book and to engage in

meaningful discussion with others about it’s content.

Please submit your stewardship story examples to

[email protected]. They may be edited

for space consideration.

Ministry to the Sick:

Volunteers Needed

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states the

residentes a lavarse y a comer.

Aunque no existe ningún número requerido

requieren persistencia y gran voluntad.

nuestros defectos y pecados. !"#$%&'()*+,-./00$#+1-2$3$4#+51)6
