something that we did in the past and don’t do anymore.

I didn’t use to ride my bike.

Did you use to cry?

GRAMMAR

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

Use

We use the “present perfect simple” to:

1. Talk about experiences that we had in our life until today. We can use

“never” (affirmative) and “ever” (question).

Ex.: I’ve never eaten frogs’ legs.

I’ve never eaten smelly cheese.

Have you ever seen the rain?

2. Talk about something that happening recently

and that has consequences in the present.

Ex.:

I’ve broken my leg. (Ainda estou de gesso, liga o passado com o

presente).

COMPARE WITH:

I broke my leg. (Aconteceu no passado, não mais de gesso).

I’ve lived in S.P. for 10 years. (Ainda moro, liga o passado com o

presente).

COMPARE WITH:

I lived in S.P. for 10 years. (Eu morava, não moro mais).

-In the “present perfect simple”, we don’t know (or it doesn’t really

matter) when something happened exactly. Time is indefinite. We don’t

use expressions like last year, yesterday, in 2012 that define time.

Ex.: I’ve been to Japan last year. I went to Japan last year.

GRAMMAR

PRESENT PERFECT X PAST SIMPLE

-We use the “present perfect simple” to talk about

experiences. It doesn’t matter when they happened.

experience. We can put an expression of definite time.

Example:

Q: Have you ridden an elephant?

A: Yes, I have. I rode an elephant in India in 1948.
