How is the atmosphere as the stage is set for the third edition of NSFA & SFFI?

NSFA & SFFI is a prestigious event that provides an opportunity for students of film making to explore various avenues of the art form. We are glad to host such a huge and prestigious event. It is a pleasure to know that the festival is receiving an audience from

across the nation, including participants coming from smaller cities. We are working to make it a huge success.

What is the importance of NSFA & SFFI?

This is an esteemed festival featuring best student film makers of the country. It is a medium of cultural exchange through cinema. It is a national platform to showcase our films and view films of fellow artists. The stage at SFFI is set for panel discussions and masterclasses of experts from various fields of film making. There is a free flow of knowledge as experts and amateurs interact and share their opinions about their craft.

How is the 3rd NSFA & SFFI different from the previous years?

The expanse of the festival has increased. This year we are screening films from Sri Lanka, China, Auckland, New Zealand, Australia and America. This year we intend to carry out

interactions with people from the national as well as international film making circle.

How does the festival facilitate the understanding of cinema?

The festival is a ground to improve students’ understanding of cinema. I believe it provides an opportunity to students to explore the realms of cinema.

Exploring the Realms of CinemaAs the 3rd edition

of NSFA & SFFI commences, Harishankar Nachimuthu, President of the Students’ Association, FTII shares his experiences and perspective about the Festival.

Megha

A masterclass by director and screenwriter Sriram Raghavan will be held at the 3rd NSFA & SFFI. He will address student participants on 'Film Sound from a Director's Perspective' in the Class Room Theatre at 4.30 pm today.

Raghavan is an alumnus of FTII, and is known for films like Ek Hasina Thi (2004), Johnny Gaddaar (2007), Agent Vinod (2012). His latest film 'Badlapur' was released in theatres last week.

Raghavan has made

exceptional films with unconventional themes. The sound design in his films has been crucial in setting the mood of his films.

His love for noir, tales of wickedness and dark themes is not alien to his audience. This makes it all the more neccessary for the sound design of his films to be as powerful and effective as the script and execution.

For a director, script and sound are complementary elements. The masterclass is directed towards conveying how effective sound goes hand in hand with visuals.

Tell us about your film Sadabahar Brass Band

Sadabahar Brass Band is my diploma film. It explores the experiences of members of a brass band living in an office that is about to be demolished. It talks about the attachment people can have with a building that they have been residing in for several years. Sadabahar Brass Band is about cherishing old memories and nostalgia. I feel honoured that it has been selected as an opening film of

this prestigious festival.

Your earlier film Firdous tells the story of Kashmiris why did you choose such a sensitive subject?

Firdous was my 2nd year studio project. It was based on the abandoned house of Kashmiris. I wanted to show pain and suffering of the Kashmiri people. Also, back in my hometown I had met an old man whose life and experiences inspired me to make this film and I adapted them in the context of Kashmir.

You joined FTII after completing your masters, what drew you towards films and the Institute?

I have always been a fan of Indian Cinema but then I didn’t come to Pune to become a film director. I came here to pursue masters degree in literature but my passion for films and my brother’s motivation made me join the Institute. After I entered the Institute, I felt as if a new window to the world cinema is opened for me. The experience at FTII completely changed my life.

‘My film is about Nostalgia’Ankita Mhasalkar & Minal Metkari

Tushar More is a budding filmmaker with a passion to express human emotions through compelling visuals. After completing M. A. in English Literature, his interest in filmmaking made him to take a career shift. As an FTII student his first film Firdous won many accolades while his diploma film Sadabahar Brass Band was screened as an opening film for 3rd NSFA & SFFI. He shares his experiences about making films.

Chaar YaarThe festival will host a

soulful evening with the innovative music band Chaar Yaar. The theme will the ever enchanting Sufi music. Members of the band – Madan

Gopal Singh (poet and vocalist), Deepak Castelino (guitarist and banjo player), Pritam Ghosal (sarod player) Gurmeet Singh and (multiple percussionist) – have been experimenting with various genres of music since 2004, when the group was formed.

Gerhard GruberA living legend, Gerhard

Gruber is a renowned musician who has been composing music for silent films since 1983. The Austrian artist will be delivering a Master Class on Improvising Music. Students will get to interact with Gruber through the valuable platform of NSFA and SFFI.

3rd NSFA & SFFI Bulletin Editor: Chandrashekhar Joshi. Festival Director: D. J. Narain, Director, Film and Television Institute of India. Content managed by Vedh Content and Communication.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan“Back in the years when I started studying about

cinema, FTII was the first ever Institute that trained film makers. The scenario has drastically changed now, with an explosion of institutions all over the country. Over 34 film institutions are taking part in this festival alone. FTII gives the students of cinema the opportunity to watch, interact and discuss films. National Students Film Awards is a huge opportunity for students of cinema to win awards. It is indeed a great initiative."

“The medium and technology of cinema has changed over the years. Everything is in digital format now, which makes it easier for anybody and everybody to be a filmmaker. You would see young people of today with a smart phone in their hand, shooting and making films out of it. It is digital technology which has made this possible. Technology has immensely contributed to the quality of films”.

Shatrughan Sinha“I feel I am amongst my people when I am

at FTII. I owe my success to Pune, the first love of my life. I would not have won any awards or achieved anything if I had not been trained here. I have tremendous love, respect and regard for the institute. FTII is the pride of the nation; an Institute that produces the best filmmakers FTII can consider me bankable and trustworthy for any assistance in the future. I am a member of this family. I want to carry the baton of the culture forward.”

“Be your best and original in whatever work you do. Try to be better than the best and different from the rest. I urge the young generation to be creators and not imitators. A man is recognised by his work and not his name.”
