PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Sara Davey - Academy Principal

Welcome once again to the Academy newsletter for this week. We are always looking at ways of making the Academy a better place to be and this week we have installed a new system to secure the Academy between 08:00 and 16:30. If you are a regular visitor you will have noticed that entry can now only be gained by using the intercom system and remote locking mechanism. Students can still enter the building using their normal entrances and we would ask all visitors to use the call system and wait to be admitted by reception staff.

It’s all about you...

It’s been a busy week for our Music Department this week with our students attending the Youth Music Festival at Truro College followed by Years 7 and 8 students taking part in a Cornish Singing event at Penwith College to celebrate St Piran’s Day. The week ended with our musicians and dancers taking part in the annual procession which gets better every year.

We’ve also been busy continuing our ongoing commitment to making sure that our classrooms are suitable for 21st Century learning. This week Mr Lees and Mr Jones completed the refit of one of our computer suites with new networking, desks, chairs and two amazing light boxes, which were designed and built by our own Mr Glenville.

Both my Year 8 classes have been creating Macbeth collages this week in order to showcase their understanding of the play’s characters and themes. It has been great to hear students discussing which words and images to choose from a selection of magazines and newspapers and justifying their choices with reference to the play. The collages are looking really good, will brighten up the classroom and will be an excellent reference point for revision when it comes to their assessment in week nine.

Road Safety Photoshoot

On Wednesday 1st March four Year 9 students visited Penzance Fire Station to collaborate with the Fire Service and Cornwall County Council on a local road safety campaign. Arianna Caddy, Kate Matthew,Rhys Brown and I had to travel to Long Rock Industrial Estate where we had to act out walking home from school while using our mobiles and chatting. The photographer asked us to walk along the path as we would normally do when walking home from school while he snapped away! It was very exciting! Other people took on different roles: a cyclist, an older pedestrian, a motorcyclist, two firemen with a hose as well as us students. The photographs looked very professional and I think they will help raise awareness of road safety and show that we are all as vulnerable as each other. It was a great opportunity and was a very interesting new experience.

Finally, we were also given a guided tour of the fire engines at the fire station and were even able to sit in one and find out about each of the firefighter’s roles depending on where they sit in the truck. Overall, it was a really great trip that we would happily all do again!

The Campaign picture: The 60m fire hose illustrates the distance travelled while a text is read by a driver. Other road users in the picture could be at risk.

The campaign highlights the dangers of using a moblie phone while driving. On average it takes 4.6 seconds to read a text and this equates to 60 metres of driving without watching the road. The Government has introduced harsher penalties for people caught driving while using mobile devices. This includes: drivers who have had their license for less than two years losing their licence, fines doubling to £200 and drivers incurring six penalty points on their licence.

Year 9 Child Development

This semester the Year 9 Child Development class are focusing on children's diet and health as well as gaining an understanding and appreciation for childcare provisions and the care of those children with additional needs.

During the course of the semester they will be focusing on the two essential questions dividing the topics firstly; "Can a good diet cure more than the doctor?” and "Can we world proof the child or child proof the world?". Students will begin to analyse the effects diet can have on health and the implications of parental and carers support.

To complete the semester the class will be attending the Little Harbour Children’s Hospice in St Austell. While visiting, students will have the opportunity to see and experience different types of care available for children with additional needs. Leading up to the visit the class will complete a project designing factual leaflets or booklets to be presented within the Hospice. Students will also develop fundraising opportunities to present money raised to the Hospice Manager in April.

Moving into the Summer Semester the students will be finalising their controlled assessments. These are individual Child Studies comprised of four observations and planned activities with a child of their choice aged from newborn to five years old. As a fresh pair of eyes to look over their studies, a local Early Years Nursery and Day Care Manager will be coming into the Academy to help deliver coursework workshops alongside Miss Walters.

Exploring St Piran’s DayAs it was St Piran’s Day today the Year 7 English group have learnt in class the story of St Piran and have looked at what makes Cornwall unique. We looked at myths and legends as well as the industries that were once abundant in Cornwall such as fishing, farming and, of course, mining. The students worked in small groups to create a short improvisation about the areas discussed in class.

Well done to 7 Red who have wrestled The Accelerated Reader Cup from the grasp of 7 Blue, who did a sterling job of trying to retain it for a second month.

Twenty two students from 7 Red took at least one quiz in February, which is a fantastic team effort. A total of 35 books were enjoyed by these 22 students, culminating in a total of an amazing 1,841,267 words being read.

‘Read Me Like A Book’, by local author Liz Kessler was a popular read in 7 Red during February, as was ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy and the ‘Divergent’ series. Amy Jackson read all four of Malorie Blackman's ‘Noughts and Crosses’ series in February, which were recommended to her by fellow classmate Faith Medley. Ziji Lee enjoyed three of Michael Scott's 'The Secrets of Nicholas Flamel' series: ‘The Magician’, ‘The Invaders’ and ‘The Sorceress’ while Hanul McCowan has just finished ‘Lies’, the third novel in Michael Grant's epic ‘Gone’ series.

I am thrilled to announce that during February alone, students from across all eight tutor groups successfully passed 313 Accelerated Reader quizzes on the books they had enjoyed reading. Well done to all of you who are reading regularly and getting involved. Who will take The Accelerated Reader Tutor Cup next month?

Sailing Adventure

Iris Rainbow has been selected, from applicants from all over the country, to have a place aboard a sail training yacht that is to circumnavigate Great Britain. Iris got her first taste of yacht sailing last year when she sailed on the annual school sailing trip. She had a fantastic week then and was a very strong member of the crew. This put her in good stead for her selection on this new, amazing adventure.

The Morvagh Sailing Project runs a 60ft yacht out of Plymouth and is starting its 2017 season with the Aspire 360 project, a five week, 1700 mile journey. Iris and seven other young people will sail clockwise around Great Britain on this adventure of a lifetime. They will be visiting 16 ports around the country and will visit iconic maritime locations in three countries, including Dublin in Ireland.

This is no easy undertaking. Iris will be spending days and days on end at sea. She will have to help operate the ship in all weathers and at night - regardless of how tired, cold or seasick she may be feeling herself. However she will come back with more sailing experience than many skippers and yacht owners four times her age. She will have made new friends and have memories that few others will be able to relate to.

Iris will be writing a blog whilst she is away and this will be accessible through the school website. We are really looking forward to seeing her photos and hearing how she is getting on. Congratulations Iris and 'fair winds!'

BEADVENTUROUS

“I am really lucky and honoured to be picked for this life-changing voyage. I sailed last year for the first time with the Rona Sailing Trust and really enjoyed it, so when this opportunity popped up I jumped at it.

When I applied I had no expectation of actually getting through to the trip because so many other people had applied too. This trip will be a test of my endurance and teamwork and will hugely boost my self-confidence.

I can’t wait to see all the wildlife and some amazing landmarks like the white cliffs of Dover. We’re even going up the Thames a bit to visit the National Maritime Museum. It’ll be interesting to experience the variations in the weather as we sail around the coast of Britain. I’ve got to be prepared for virtually any conditions in April.” - Iris Rainbow

Report by Mr Fish

Mr Kent, Deputy Director of Maths at MBA and a crew member on the Penlee Lifeboat is one of the few people to have sailed a similar course around the coast of Great Britain.

“Sailing around the British coast is a great way to see the varied and spectacular country we live in. It is a very challenging, but highly rewarding experience.

I sailed around Britain in 2004 in a small racing yacht in the year before I trained as a teacher. It is an experience I will always remember.

I think Iris will have an amazing adventure, learn many new skills, make lifelong friends and make lasting memories.”

Year 7 students have been working with local artist Belinda Landini, alongside Pol Hodge and Joe Lewis from Golden Tree Productions, to learn Cornish as part of 'Treasure Quest', a project bringing Cornish language into schools in West Penwith.

Students created this series of paintings in response to the question 'Pandra' Vynn ta bos' which translates as 'What do you want to be?'

Festival Kernewek - Penzance Cornish Language Festival

BECREATIVE

In response to this theme, students produced a collection of paintings that are personal and reflective, capturing imagery that connected to them as individuals in their local environment. They then applied this to their hopes and aspirations- linking their past, present and future together.

The students worked in a professional way to create artworks that are now hung in the Exchange Gallery. They had just a day to work in a group to make a large-scale painting that they knew would be exhibited. It was a productive and creative process! Well done to all involved.

Huck New, Konnah Sanson and Logan Benson were selected to join 15 other talented male dancers from Devon and Cornwall to produce a curtain raiser for Panta Rei. They have committed to workshops over half term, and at weekends to get the piece and their dance training ready in time. When the day arrived All Boys Dance trained as company and worked on the stage with Panta Rei and Rob Mennear to prepare for the show. ABD also performed some of their material in the Ship Yard to members of the public and got to watch and talk to the professional dancers in rehearsal. This professional 'day in the life of' experience really focused their skills and the performance was a huge success. Suzie West and Rob Mennear have received endless amounts of positive feedback from the audience and the professional dancers on the quality, professionalism and talent of the boys.

If you would like to see what Huck, Logan and Konnah achieved, the piece 'Hush' will be performed again on 1st May at The Minack for a Dance Platform 'Mergecology' .

Well done to the boys and we can't wait to work with more boys for the next project over Easter. If you're interested in joining the boys dance group at Mounts Bay email: [email protected].

On 28th February 2017, nine students (Gage Ivey, Year 11, Frank Davies, Jenny Dash and Lucy Rendle,Year 10, Ellie Dash, Lily Hardy and Katie Trahair-Davies,Year 8 and Oscar Beckerleg and Thomas Rogers, Year 7) competed in a Regional indoor rowing competition that took place in Plymouth, at Marjon Sport Centre.

Competitors came from Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. The day started with an early start, leaving at 8:00am, and a two hour long journey to the Plymouth Sports University. Races took place throughout the day. Oscar and Thomas were the first from Mount Bay to race, and had to row for two minutes. Next was Gage who rowed for six minutes. Frank, Jenny and Lucy followed and they powered through five minutes. Last up were Ellie, Katie and Lily who raced for three minutes.

Report by Ellie Dash

Ellie rowed really well and achieved a first place overall for Year 8 girls and was awarded a gold medal. Everybody else were in very close heats and the scores and races were really close. We left at about 4:00pm for the two hour long journey back.

The day was enjoyed by everyone and everyone said that they would like to do it again if given the chance. Frank said: "It was top notch, felt like I was dying at the end, but we all tried our best (especially Ellie, that absolute legend) and I'm proud of us."

Mounts Bay’s Theo Simpson has just signed a two year Pro Scholarship deal with Exeter City FC. Theo is one of nine players from the current U16 squad to be signed. The number of signings reflects the recent success of the squad who, under the guidance of Academy coach Chad Gribble, got to the final of the South West midweek floodlit cup, the final of the national Football League competition for their age group and went the whole of their league campaign undefeated. Chad said, “It’s not often that we offer as many as nine U16s a scholarship deal, but I feel that this is a really good group with plenty of strength in depth,” he said. “This is one of our most successful groups.”

Academy manager, Simon Hayward, congratulated the players on earning the deals saying it was recognition for the hard work they have put in over the years.

Kevin Lawrence said, “I first came across Theo when he trialled for the Mounts Bay Football Development Centre way back in the 2011/2012 season. I was the Year 6 (U11) coach and Theo stood out way back then. He had clear ability to beat players and found scoring goals easy. He would score all types of goals be it from distance or slotting it past the goal keeper with a nurtured finish.

“What has always made Theo stand out for me is his winning mentality, he is very strong psychologically and has always been very confident on the pitch. Theo would chase every ball, run hard and be unbreakable in the tackle...a clear winner. Being competitive is the base line ingredient any player needs to perform at the highest level within football and Theo has this in abundance.

“Theo is a Mounts Bay FDC graduate, a national champion with West Cornwall schoolboys and has now been given his dream of becoming a professional footballer. I wish Theo all the best, he has achieved everything within our county player pathway, it has been a pleasure watching him develop over the years. I hope he can break into the senior first team at Exeter or even bigger things!”

Six MBA students were part of the U15 Cornwall County team that won against Coventry Schools at Topsham RFC in Devon at the weekend. Tyler Kearey, Thomas Ellery, Harris Eddy, Eli Williams, Toby Osborne and Ben Durrant (pictured along with other Pirates players in the team) all played really well, with Toby captaining the side and even scoring a try.

A few of the boys stayed on afterwards to watch the Exeter Chiefs play the Newcastle Falcons. They then were up early the next day to travel to Twickenham to watch the England Italy game!

The match itself was a bit one sided in favour of the Cornish team but all the boys played really well.

U15 County Rugby Players

Congratulations to former Mounts Bay student Tyler Gendall, 22, who made his Premiership rugby debut over half term for Harlequins in their victory over Bristol.

Harlequins signed the former Cornish Pirates prop in January this year on a deal that lasts until the end of the season. Tyler had played over 50 games for the Pirates since signing for them in July 2014, as a member of the Player Development Foundation.

He was a member of the Mounts Bay Academy Rugby team, the Cornwall squad from under 15s to under 20s and was a member of the South West England under 20s squad. He also played for Exeter Chiefs Academy and whilst at Truro College competed in Dubai and Japan.
