1. GENERAL. Although there was, an increase in VC terroriet activities, items of a counterintelligence interest contiDued at a low level. Significant reports received during the periOd revealed that the VC are continuing to train male and teinale lOw level espionage agents, villages and hamlets are being reorganized in order to aline the pop­ulace' with the VO gOal, and an incident of VC wire tapping was reported by a U ~S. unit located in II CTZ.

2. ESPIONAGi;

QUANG NAM. An 18 January report tram a usually reliable source related that the VC are attempting to establish a system to increase their milit&r7 intelligence collection ettort. Atter an intensive study, the QUANG DALiberation Front concluded that 'WOmen were the only sex that could collect such information. and ordered their dis­trict agents to recruit a.number of attractive females to attend a training course. Women were selected trom the villages ot HOA IiA tBT 035720), HO! f a. QUANG TRI (P) -. DMZ'. Aerial photography"flown on 23 January over the

farnortheaatern portion of the ,00. and immediately north of. the ar.ea. revealed no significant increase. in enemy ground:activity when compared to missions covering the· same area flown on' 21 December. Enemy initiated ground activity consisting of. a series of short, probing ani. harassing actions, including mortar fire; was centered in the' northeastern portion. of" the province south of and just within the DMZ. Light to moder~te casualties also resulted in the deaths of two village chiefs;. Southeast QUANG TRI (P) saw a drop in enemy: initiated. activity when. compared to the prior reporting Period. on· 21 and 22 January, at (YD 420.514) and (In 431530), contacts were reported with enemy-elements estimated in company strength. ARVN and PF' units' were involved, casualties were negligible <

and the enemy driven off. An incident of terrorism occurred on 22' Januaq-.' at (YD' 185590) when an unknown number of VC entered MOe Due (H) and assassinated the assis'tant to the local Catholic . priest.

Substantial ground reconnaissance north and. west of.THON SCNLAM reported total sightings of the. eneDlJ' nUIllbering approximately 100 ve/NVA.· The ene~ was observed in small groups numbering 10. to 20 men per group. Five sharp contacts were made along·the'reconnaissanceline with substantial' casualties inf'licted on the, enemy. On 26 January a reconnaissance- insert in. the vicinity of (XD 672529) gained contact with an estimated J5.to 40 VC northeast of KHE SANH. Fighting,' ensued and, during subsequent. reinforce-· J11ent of. the initial element, three CH-46Als~·..1ere .downed. All personnel. were·' successfully extracted early the next day.' ..

One group numbered approximatel3' 200. Elsewhere in QUANG TRI (p) enemy activity was limited to isolated and small scale harassing actions.

b. THUA THIEN (p) - PHU BAl TAOR. !here was a slight increase in the, tem~o of enemy ac ti vi ty in nO:l;theastern THUA THIEN (p). ali 23 January, the 224th RF Co, approx:Lmately three kilometers. northwest of HUONGDIEN (V), was attacked by an estimated two companies of 1C. Although casualties were light and the VC subsequently driven off, there was a loss of seven individ­ual weapons. Other enemy activity. in this northeast sector included ,short mortar attacks against isolated RF and PF elements.

On 22 January, at (YD 565346), two platoons of the ARVN Black Panther Co successfully ambushed an estimated 50 VC. Enemy casualties were 19 KIA (Confirmed), one VCC and 12 individual weapons captured. Intelligence infor­mation which led up to this ambush had been obtained from a returnee who was formerly a member of the 802nd Bn.

Additional information acquired from two other returnees and a captiVe placed the Headquarters of the '6th Regt at (YD 5521) and the 802nd Bn at (YO 5723). Operation CHINOOK continued in the same general area with light contact and an increase in enemy use of mines and booby traps. On 24 J~uary M Co, Jrd Bn, 26th Marines observed 45 VC in the vicinity of • (YD 545291). Artillery fire was called with undetermined results.

Ground reconnaissance deployed west'll'd south of the CHL~OOK Operation area ,reported a total 'of approximately 120 VC; the majority were con­centrated within the area (YD 5323). Several contacts were made with moderate to heavy casualties inflicted on the enemy •. For the: past three weells enemy activity in the CHINOOK area has proceeded at a constant rate and' a good portion of the intelligence information avaiUtble regarding the area continues to indicate an enemy apparently concerned over the procUre­ment of requisite rice supplies. .

Within the western portion of the ~NANG TAOR and immediately west of it, in the vicinity of (AT 7955), the' enemy maintained a moderately strong Bround effort for the second consec- . utive week. On 22 January, at (AT 833554), H Co, 2nd Bn, 4th Marines made contact with an enemy ,force of undetermined size. Fire was exchanged; artillery and air brought in on the enemy with 15 VC KIA (Confirmed) and five KIA (Probable).
