Echolocation Experiment
Sound Waves Tray: This tray lets you see how objects can interrupt waves,
including sound waves! Bats use echolocation by sending sounds out through their
mouth and nose. The sound waves hit objects and bounce back to their ears. They
can use the information from the sound waves to tell where objects are, even in
complete darkness!
The Sound Waves Tray lets you watch how objects can interrupt waves. Sound
waves travel through air the same way that the waves are traveling through the
water.
To set up your Sound Waves Tray, simply fill a bowl about half full of water. Set a few floating
objects on top of the water. When the water is still, drop a sinking object (like a rock or coin)
into the water and watch the waves spread. Or, use your finger to "poke" the water. Pay
attention to what happens when a wave hits one of the floating objects!
1. What happens when you drop a sinking object or poke your finger into the water?

A Bat Mystery
Some bats are in trouble. They have an illness. Thousands of bats have died from it.
The bats get a white fungus on their noses, ears, and wings. A fungus is a type of plant life that can make
animals sick.
Scientists do not know why the bats are getting sick. They have been trying to solve the mystery for more than a
year.
“We’re trying to nd out what this fungus is and where it came from, ” says scientist Susi von Oettingen. She
works for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “We’re trying to figure out if we can make the bats healthy again, ”
she says.

The Science behind Rabies and Bats
Rabies is a disease that affects the brain. It's usually passed from animal
to animal but it can be passed from animals to people. It´s caused by a
virus. A virus is a very tiny germ, and you can only see that germ if you
have a special microscope.
Any mammal can get rabies. Do you remember what a mammal is? Mammals
are warm-blooded animals with fur. We´re mammals, and so are most of
our pets like cats and dogs. Lots of farm animals like cows and horses are
mammals, and so are wild animals like foxes and skunks. We can all get
rabies. Even bats can get rabies!
In the United States, raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats are the main
animals that get rabies.
Rabies is a big problem in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Medicines and
vaccines are sometimes not available there, so if someone is bitten by an
animal with rabies, they might not be able to get help right away.
Rabies is a serious disease. This year, over 59,000 people around the world
will die from rabies. That's one person every 9 minutes. Half of the people
who die from rabies are under the age of 15.

Bats – Introduction
Bats are the only mammals that can fly! They are most active at night or during the
twilight of dawn and dusk. When the sun comes up, bats return to their homes, hang themselves upside down with their clawed toes, and take a long nap!
When bats fly, they use their mouths or noses to send out high-pitched sounds. Then, bats rely on their hearing to pick up echoes of these sounds. This process is called echolocation (echo-location). Echolocation helps bats to find their way in the dark and spot prey like moths.
Surprisingly, not all bats feed on blood. Some bats eat insects, lizards, or other small animals. Some love fruit, nectar, or pollen. The vampire bat is one of the three types of bats that drink blood. When a vampire bat finds its sleeping victim, it uses its sharp teeth to cut out a piece of skin and licks the wound. Its victim does not wake up, because the bite is so small and hardly noticeable. Vampire bats usually attack cattle and horses, but not people.

Can Bats give you rabies?
Yes, a bat can give you rabies.
Bats are mammals -warm-blooded animals with fur - so they can get rabies.
The only way they can give YOU rabies is if you are bitten by one.
Most bats don't have rabies, but you can't tell just by looking. If you see a
bat, the best thing to do is to leave it alone. Or if you wake up in a room
with a bat, tell your parents or an adult.
Bats only come out when the sun is down. If you see a bat that can't fly, or
see a bat during the day, there might be something wrong. The bat may be
sick, and you should be sure to stay away.
Even after being careful, if you still get bitten, wash the bite really well
with soap and water. Tell an adult and go right away to a doctor. If an
adult can safely catch the bat, take it with you so the doctors can send it
to be tested to see if it has rabies. If the bat doesn't have rabies, then
you're all clear.
If no one can catch the bat, or if the tests say the bat has rabies, your
doctor will give you a series of shots to make sure YOU don't get rabies.
But don't worry; they don't hurt any worse than a regular shot!

Bat News
A bat hangs upside down while it sleeps. Read about someone who hangs with bats.
To the Bat Cave!
Meet Joseph D’Angeli, New Jersey’s very own bat man. D’Angeli is a chiroptologist (kigh-rop-TAH-luh-jist), or
a person who studies bats. He keeps about 19 bats as pets in his home. He learns about the bats by watching
them.
D’Angeli wanted to be a bat scientist when he was young. "When I was a teen, I loved watching bats
everywhere—at zoos, out in the wild, on TV, everywhere, " says D’Angeli.
Bats are nocturnal animals. They are active at night. Many people are afraid of these night creatures. D’Angeli
teaches people that some bats are shy, loving, and even helpful!
Bat Facts
Bats are mammals. Mammals are warm-blooded animals that have hair on their bodies.
Some people put bat houses in their yards. Bats eat pesky insects.
Some bats eat fruits. They help plants grow by dropping the seeds in dierent places.
Bats sleep upside down. Their home is called a roost.
Bat babies are called pups. Female bats feed their babies milk from their bodies.

How do you know if a Bat has Rabies?
You can't tell if an animal has rabies by just looking at it. A clue though is
if the animal is acting strangely.
Some animals may act mad when they have rabies. They will be hostile and
may try to bite you or other animals. In movies, animals with rabies look
like they are foaming at the mouth. What's really happening is that the
rabies makes them have more saliva and that makes them drool.
Other animals may act timid or shy when they have rabies. This is the most
common kind. A wild animal might move slowly or act tame. You might be
able to easily get close to it. Since that´s not the way wild animals usually
act, you should remember that something could be wrong.
The only way doctors can know for sure if an animal or a person has rabies
is to do a laboratory test.
The best thing to do is to never feed or approach a wild animal. Be careful
of pets that you do not know. If you see a stray dog or cat, don't pet it.
And if any animal is acting strangely, call your local animal control officer
for help.

Here’s a poem about Bats by Robert Ford
The Bat Poem
Bats are big
bats are small have a good time
with them all
Bats may be scary OH MY, but they will never make you die
No one knows when they came about, but they use echolocation to find their route.
Tonight they'll eat 6000 mosquitoes. They must be very hungry! Right?
One day all the bats will be gone, but if respect them, they will never go wrong.
What are lines of a poem? Remember, they are what we normally would call a sentence when we write.
In a poem they are called lines. These lines don’t always need to have a punctuation mark at the end
either.
What are the stanzas of a poem? Stanzas are groups of lines in a poem. When you are finished with
several lines that look like a paragraph, you move onto writing another group of lines to create a new
stanza with a new idea about the poem.
How many lines are in the poem above? ___ How many stanzas are in the poem above? ___
How does the author of the poem describe bats? ______________________
________________________________________________________
How do bats find their route/location? _____________________________
What do the bats eat in the poem? _________ About how many of those insects do the bats
eat? ________________
Now it’s your turn to write a poem about Bats. It does not have to rhyme, it can be as
many lines and stanzas as you wish. Make sure to add a title.
