What’s new: Walt Disney's classic, Mary Poppins, is 54 years old this year and the sequel

is eagerly anticipated this Christmas. This week – we have our own

interpretation of the P.L. Travers novel which is delighting audiences on

three nights this week. In honour of its debut on our Anglo stage, I thought

we should remember the key life lessons which, arguably, remain just as

relevant five decades on:

"In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the

fun, and - SNAP - the job's a game!"

A positive attitude to learning and work works wonders! Teachers work

tirelessly to find engaging hooks to capture a love of learning in lessons and

students who come to lessons with a “can do” attitude, will always take

away more from the lesson than those who approach learning negatively.

"First of all, I would like to make one thing quite clear… I never

explain anything." Be proud of who you are and what you stand for. Mary Poppins was a

formidable character and in many ways Disney's first feminist icon. She was

a woman with a clear mission and didn’t let those who criticised her

methods prevent her from achieving her aims. Be self-aware!

"Practically perfect people never permit sentiment to muddle their

thinking."

Think with your head! Mary Poppins thought with reason, not emotion,

which was also unusual, given the portrayal of women of her time; For

every problem, there was a logical solution. Don’t bring problems without

having thought of possible solutions. Be resilient.

"People who get their feet wet must learn to take their medicine." Every action has a consequence. Mary Poppins was clear when it came to

accepting responsibility; she had a clear moral compass and made principled

decisions. When you make errors of judgement, face up to the

responsibilities and the consequences. The word “sorry” goes a long way to

putting things right. Communicate.

"That's a piecrust promise. Easily made, easily broken." Mary Poppins knew that not everyone was reliable; Being reliable,

trustworthy and honouring your word is a value we all appreciate. Team

work!

information including the module/

unit number. The form needs to

head of department. Payment

Thank you to Bonnetts

Garden Village in Mascalls

Lane, Brentwood for donating this lovely tree which stands proudly in our foyer.

We are pleased to be able to share with you that we have added

Twitter to our social media presence. Our Twitter name is

@angloeuropean73. Please feel free to follow us on Twitter as

well as Facebook www.facebook.com/angloeuropeanschool .

Thank you for all your donations

to the Royal British Legion Poppy

Appeal which we have been

informed have amounted to a

record-breaking £443.88.

Meet some of our new Year 10 Student Councillors:

Emma Mlunjwana said that she wanted to join the

Anglo Council so that she could be the voice of the

students who are not heard. Amber Smurthwaite

wanted “to bring back ethics and learn different ways

to signify internationalism within school”. Bridget

Phillips said that she was enjoying being part of the

Anglo Council and was keen to look further into

students’ issues, in particular, with whether the uniform

could be improved during the cold weather. Marlene

Tamtik said that she enjoyed talking on behalf of the

school community. She said that she has already

received suggestions from other students.

Show My Homework:

If you have a question or comment about your homework, please remember

that it is always best to email your teacher using the school’s email account

[email protected] and put in the subject line FAO your

teacher. There is a facility on Show My Homework for students to leave

comments or questions for their teacher; however, your teacher has to log-in to Show My

Homework to see if there is a comment and, therefore, they may not see this in good

time. Leaving a comment here does not generate a notification for your teacher and so it is

best to email.

Some teachers do use the comments facility on Show My Homework to send messages to

you and, in this case, it is sensible to reply to them on Show My Homework.

Mr Seager, Deputy Headteacher

Mr Knights (Subject Leader: Business Studies and

Economics) is looking to organise a new series of seminars in

the new year aimed at bringing current business and

economics topics to life. The seminars will be attended by

students from across the department (Year 10 – Upper Sixth)

and will enhance the theory taught in the classroom.

Mr Knights is looking for guest speakers to debate / present

their viewpoints at the events. The first seminar will be

considering the topic of “Brexit: Impacts and Opportunities”

and a second will address “Crypto currencies: A banking revolution?”

Such events are extremely valuable to students and work best when a diverse panel of speakers attend. Therefore,

Mr Knights is interested to hear from parents who work in relevant industries and would be able to give up their

afternoon to speak at the seminars.

Please could anyone interested send a message addressed to Mr Knights via [email protected]

We believe this is a real opportunity to get into the

Christmas spirit and show that we are a caring,

generous and friendly community, please feel free to

SIXTH FORM FOCUS

A word from the Sixth Form: I'd like to wish the Upper Sixth a happy holiday season

and all the best with their preparation for their Prelims

in January. Please make sure that you have a relaxing

break but also prepare sufficiently to allow you to test

how effective your knowledge retention and

examination technique are. Make sure that you recap

the lessons you have learnt from your Lower Sixth

prelims and heed the advice given by your teachers

throughout the year in their feedback. Good luck!

For the Lower Sixth students, firstly, I also wish you a

relaxing holiday period, but would also urge you

to take the time to consolidate your knowledge so far

in each of your subjects, prepare for your next topics

and start to think about some self-reflection on your

first Term in time for Parents’ Evening on the 10th

January.

Mr Newton, Director of Sixth Form

Why I chose to study the International

Baccalaureate…

I chose to study the IB because I felt like I

had more freedom with the subjects that I

could study, as the IB requires six subjects.

I liked the idea of being able to carry on

the study of English, Maths, Science and a

language at different levels of difficulty

along with my personal choices. The IB

would set me up to be a more well-rounded

student which would hugely benefit me

during university, especially with all of my

subjects requiring internal assessments. I

also understood that by doing the IB, and since a minority of

people do the IB, it would set me apart in the future when it

comes to applying for a competitive law degree and then a

competitive career in the law industry and give me a certain

‘edge’ over others. Overall, I believed that the IB would better

equip me for the university and career life that I have chosen.

Although many people are hesitant about doing the IB, if you are

driven from the start, it comes naturally and also hugely benefits

you in the future.
