Matt’s Friends Bring Him to Jesus

We can ask Jesus to help us!

SCHEDULE for all sites: First 10 minutes of the service hour: Relationship-building time (kids get to know each other and the volunteers) Next 25 minutes: Large group teaching and worship Last 30 minutes: Story review, snack and small groups, activities/crafts If you finish early, have kids engage group games as parents arrive. Check out the end of the activities section to find an idea for this week.

When you're doing a craft/activity that kids will do individually, write their names on the back of the item as they come into the room. That will save you some time later and allow you to spend more time helping them with the activity. Plus it is easier to distinguish which craft is theirs at check-out time.

As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents to check out the parent page to see where they can watch today’s video as a family.

Today is about how a man who asked Jesus for healing—and Jesus healed him! Next week, we’ll talk about how Jesus can heal. Today, we’re focusing on the fact that Jesus helps us anytime we ask!

So God sent his own son, Jesus, to

Goal: To help kids remember they can ask Jesus for help in any situation, just like the man in the story. Why? Jesus can do miracles—and he loves it when we trust him enough to ask him for help.

1

*Discuss during snack so you have time to play the ACTIVITY together! REVIEW

1. What was wrong with the man in the story? (he couldn’t walk)

2. Who did he want to ask for help? (Jesus)

3. When he got to the house Jesus was at, there were TONS of people. What did this guy’s friends do to get to Jesus? (they cut a hole in the roof)

4. When Jesus saw the guy coming down from a hole in the roof, did he help him? (Yes!)

5. What did Jesus help Matt do? (Walk!)

RELATE 6. When can we ask Jesus for

help? (anytime) 7. What will Jesus help us with?

(Anything! If your group is older, brainstorm ways Jesus helps you)

SAY: Jesus wants to help us ANYTIME! Let’s play a game to remind us that we can ask Jesus for help no matter how we feel. DO: Have kids gather around a parachute. Follow the steps below to help kids understand that they can ask Jesus for help anytime. Bounce a different ball separately for each of the first 4 steps. Then put them all together! Help the kids make the balls bounce up and down in the parachute. Try these variations:

• “Happy” (1st ball)--Jesus helps me when I’m happy! (cheer and laugh as you bounce the ball around)

• “Sad” (2nd ball)--Jesus helps me when I’m sad… (pretend to cry “boohoo” or “waaah” while you bounce balls)

• “Scared” (3rd ball)--Jesus helps me when I’m…scared! (Say “Aaaaah” or “oh no!” as you bounce balls) CONTINUED:

QUESTIONS ACTIVITY

Tip: If you like to review the story while kids eat a snack, do the ACTIVITY first today. That way, if kids take awhile to finish, everybody will get a chance to participate in an important part of today’s lesson.

So God sent his own son, Jesus, to

22

• “Angry” ball (4th ball)--Jesus helps me when I’m mad (say “grrrrrr” as you bounce balls around)

• ALL 4--Jesus helps me….ANYTIME! (Throw all the balls in the center and make it a free-for-all. See how long you can keep them bouncing)

• Put the happy ball in the center and roll toward the kids, one by one. When it reaches a child, call out “Jesus helps ________! (name)”

*Extra time? Try out this game to keep kids engaged until their parents arrive:

Animal Party (OPTIONAL IF TIME PERMITS)

Make a circle. Choose one person to be the leader (be the leader first to show kids how it’s done).

The leader names an animal and then everybody imitates that animal! Be as loud and crazy as you want. Do sounds, movements, or both!

To mix things up, limit animal choices per round. Ask kids to choose specific animals such as jungle animals, farm animals, birds, bugs, fish, etc.

So God sent his own son, Jesus, to

We have a video for today’s story, but we’re relying on you to set it up. Be really dramatic when you describe the guy who can’t walk. It’ll help kids see just how amazing it was that Jesus was able to help him.

Find ways to keep kids engaged by having them repeat a word or phrase, act something out, or make a face or a motion... every couple of minutes give them a way to engage verbally or kinesthetically. Double bonus - It will actually help them remember what you're saying, too!

Presenter: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kid’s Club. I'm _______________ and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend, HOPS. She’s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today Kids’ Club. Video: HOPS 2 Obey Your Leaders! (About 1 minute) REVIEW Presenter: (holding up the Bible for kids to see) …This is God’s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. It’s God’s Rescue plan. Remember how God made the whole world and everything was good? But then something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sadness and death came into the world. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) So God sent his own son, Jesus, to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world. And Jesus came and lived on the earth to rescue us! He also showed us how to follow God and chose friends to follow him. His friends started following him right away! When Jesus said, “Come with me!” his friends said… (Look at kids to see if they remember. Give a “thumbs up” and say): “Let’s go!” INTRO: A MAN NEEDED HELP Well, lots of people wanted to follow Jesus. Today, we’re going to hear a story about somebody who asked Jesus for help. He was a guy who couldn’t walk. (Spread the mat on the floor and sit on it.) Because he couldn’t walk, he sat on a mat all day. He couldn’t go anywhere because his legs weren’t strong enough. (Pretend to be struggling to make your legs work.)

So God sent his own son, Jesus, to

(Stand up and hold the mat.) This man needed help. And he decided to ask Jesus to help him walk. He knew that Jesus could do anything! Let’s say that together: Jesus can do anything! “Jesus can do anything!” But he couldn’t even walk to see Jesus. And he didn’t have a wheelchair or any way to move. So some of his friends actually came and picked up the mat….while HE was on it! They carried him all the way to find Jesus. He was going to say “Jesus, help me!” Because he knew that Jesus can do… (Motion for kids to join you): anything! JESUS HEALS THE MAN Now we’re going to watch a video about what happened when this guy went to find Jesus. As you watch, try to figure out if Jesus was able to help him. Video: God’s Story / Jesus Heals “Matt” So did Jesus help this guy? (Let kids respond.) YES, he sure did! That’s because Jesus can do anything and he wants us to ask him for help. JESUS WANTS TO HELP US Since Jesus can do ANYTHING, he wants to help us, too! Today in small group, we’re going to talk about all the times Jesus can help us. But first, let’s sing and thank him for helping us! Song: Be Strong Song: Thank You, Lord PRAY Before we go, let’s pray. (Pray, breaking it into small, repeatable phrases): Hi God! Thanks for helping us! We love you! Aaaaaaaa-MEN. Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five, or maybe tiptoe or hop--like Hops--to their groups.)

Tell me about the man who couldn’t walk. When can Jesus help you?

2

Today we talked about how Jesus helped a man who couldn’t walk. Read Luke 5:17-26 together to hear the whole story. Or watch a video of the story together at www.crossroadskidsclub.net. The best part is, Jesus can help US, too. We can ask him for help with anything, anytime!
