Tooling Applications
37
Silicone Molding
• Also known as:
RTV Molding, Vacuum Casting, Urethane Casting, Soft Tooling
• Used for short series production
• Stratasys part is used as a master pattern
• Why PolyJet:
• Smooth surface (critical)
• Fine details
• Good HDT for silicone molding

FDM **
38
Injection Molding
• Using the 3D Printed mold to inject plastic
• Done using Digital ABS material (Connex)
• Enables fast and inexpensive spec material prototyping
and short series production
• Consult HQ applications team for further details and
support

39
Rapid Tooling
• Create a mold used for tooling
• Print the tool, not the part
• By creating the negative of your design
• Typically, material injected is Silicone or Wax
• Why PolyJet:
• Fine details
• Smooth Surfacing (Glossy best)
• Good HDT for silicone

40
Sand Casting
• Using the PolyJet model as a master
to generate sand mold
• The sand mold is then held in place
using chemical binder or pressure
• Metal is then cast into the sand mold
• Also a good fit for creating Sand Core Boxes
• Best fit for small- medium size parts with high details

41
Blow Molding
• Manufacturing process using air to inflate
plastic inside a mold cavity
• Stratasys technology can be used to create
molds for blow molding processes
• Best suited for pre-production, prototype tooling
• Create entire mold or mold insert
• Can be used in Injection blow molding and
Extrusion blow molding processes

• Living Hinges
• Gaskets Plugs & Seals
• Shock Absorption
• Impact Resistance
• Over Molding
• Digital ABS Functional Testing
• Soft Touch Parts
• Labeling & Texturing
Connex Applications
43
Over Molding
• Process of 2 materials combined, producing a single part
• Typically a rigid plastic with a rubber-like
• Traditional method required silicone molding & gluing
• Why Objet:
• We are the only ones that can print multiple materials
• Connex rigid & rubber-like combination - perfect for over molding
44
Digital ABS
Functional Testing
• Digital ABS material allows for simulation of ABS
• Only on Connex (Digital Material)
• Material allows for further Functional Testing
• Why is this important:
• Customer wans to fully evaluate the prototype
• Have better understanding of end-product
• The more they can do with the model, the better!
45
Soft Touch Parts
• The ability to generate soft touch parts
• Idea is less for functional testing
• Simulating rubber-like parts
• DM selection allow pinpointing Shore desired
• Typically used for visual appreciation
46
Labeling & Texturing
• Ability to label and create texture on a given Connex parts
• Advantage in Concept Modeling (Form Testing)
• Advantage in Design Validation (Qualification / Categorization)
• You can label and monitor different versions in print
• Texturing is more important than people initially think…
47
Living Hinges
• Thin flexible hinge joining two rigid parts together
• (Allowing bending along the line of the hinge)
• DM excellent elongation-to-break & tear resistance
• Allows for living hinges to be generated on Connex
• Living hinges can be used for:
• Caps and packaging
• Clips
• Left and right clamp shells
48
Gaskets, Plugs &
Seals
• You can use DMs to determine seals material
• Critical in product design
• With Objet you can just select the part…
• And print that area in a certain DM desired
• Remember: Our materials are air/water tight
• Top is a prototype printed by Objet (lid)
• Bottom is the final product…amazing no?!
49
Impact Resistance
• Parts can be coated using a DM to generate impact resistance:
• Simulates behavior of part on strong impact
• (i.e. drop tests are used to determine impact resistance)
• Various coating determinations different resistance levels
