Make a 3D Layered DrawingDefy the flatness of paper
and make a drawing that is truly 3D!
STEP 1PREPARATION & TOOLS
•Plastic box or Picture Frame•Ruler•Pencil•X-ACTO Knife•Foam Board•Spare Cardboard•Tape, Glue•Ink, Pencils, Markers, Spraypaint or preferred art materials
STEP 21.Trace your box or frame to determine the dimensions of your work2.Start Drawing inside the box3.For added depth and foreground, choose something like a cityscape.
DESIGN TIPS•Your background should be a piece of paper the size of the box or frame
•While drawing your background, keep in mind what you're going to place in the front.
•Pay attention to detail and draw each layer separately so that you're not cutting into your backdrops or props
STEP 3•Using your preferred art materials, actually finish the work•Keep in mind that you're going to cut these out, try to maintain a clear outline
STEP 4Cut out Your Props and
Background
•Trace your knife slowly and carefully around the edges of your drawings
STEP 5Review & Arrange Your Scene
After you have all of your pieces cut out, arrange them in layers to get an idea of what the finished
work will look like
STEP 6Cut a cardboard frame...cardboard is optional, but you need a frame to support your work..
REMEMBER TO USE MEASUREMENTS!!
STEP 7
Glue, or attach your backdrop to the cardboard or frame
STEP 8Using your X-ACTO knife, cut the foamboard into little bricks to support the props in your work.
You might want to glue the foam for your props first!
STEP 9
Attach your props to the foreground.
STEP 10Place the plastic box over your backdrop.
There should be a sense of depth.
It is up to you on how you want to attach the frame..
STEP 11Finishing Touches!
You can decide whether or not
you want to add anything to your frame, maybe paint it.
