AUDUBON PRESENTATION -MOTE LABORATORY ©N SHARKS

by Sheri Smock

January 2, the Audubon Societypresented a film of the, *is|arcBperformed on sharks at the Mote MarineLaboratory in Sarasota. They have foundthat man's pulse and scent are whatattracts the shark. To protect oneselffrom attack several devices have beenimplemented - successful and un.

Electrodes attached to the diving suitseem to help somewhat. •

There is an ink repellent whichseems to give nothing but courageperhaps. Mote says it would take aboutONE HUNDRED of the packets to beeffective.

Many different types of repellentshave been tested. There was one thatworked-well. While it was effective with 1specie, it attracted other types of shark!

Qas has also become available. When injected, the shark looks somewhatlike a balloon deflating. Evidently it'sharmless to the shark, while it providestime to escape.

The Audubon Society will bepresenting several other.films at theSanibei Community house.

The Great Lipizzan Stallions

HELLO, DOWN THEEE1 TheLipizzan stallion, Flying Falcon, towersover Ms trainer, Harry Herrman, as hedoes a graceful pirouette, like & balletdancer. Lipizzans are called the balletdancers of the horse world.

The battle plunges of the greatLipfzzan stallions, called "airs above theground," are the featured attraction ofthe Royal Lipizzan stallions of Austria. They will give one performance ia theEdison Stadium in Fort Myers onJanuary 19, Sunday, at 2 p.m. Ticketsare on safe in Fort liyers Beach at Garf'sDrug Store and in Sanibel at Bailey'sGeneral Store. The show will be iaNaples the following weekend, Sunday,January 26, at 2 p.m. Tickets for thatshow are on sale at the Barnett Bank ofNaples. Tickets for either show can beordered by mail by sending payment aadself-addressed stamped envelope tolipizzan, P. 0. Box 488, Punta Gorda,FL 33950.

Colonel Herrmann, director of theshow and brilliant trainer, is one of themen who smuggled out the rare breedfrom under the verv noses of the

Kussians in World War II. Col. AloisPodhajsky took out the Spanish RidingSchool horses. But Col. Hen-man'sLipizzans were probably the mostendangered, being about 80 miles behindenemy lines when he started the epicjourne}', riding at night and hiding byday.

Walt Disney made a movie aboutthe incredible story of how the rarebreed was saved, "Miracle of the WhiteStallions." Every performance ColonelHerrmann tells of his experiences in avoice thick with emotion, and gives astirring tribute to General GeorgePatton, who gave them protection.

The rarest, most aristocraticbreed of horse in the world, theLipizzans were the prized possession ofthe royal Hapsburg family of Austria.Only the royalty and nobility wereallowed to own them, and the Hapsburgsgave Lipizzans to the nobles leadingtheir armies.

For centuries the "airs" struckterror into the hearts of fighting men allover Europe. A 1200 pound whiteLipizzan stallion advancing on the enemywas an unforgettable sight, and onementioned in many memoires of thetimes.

The capriole, where the stallionleaps straight up into the air and lashesout with a violent kick was used to clearthe way when the nobel found himselfsurrounded in battle.

In the courbette, the stallions aretaught to leap oa their hind legs likekangaroos. The courbette was used toshelter the rider with the horse's body,to elevate the rider, and to advance onthe enemy.

Each of the "airs," the langsade, the eroupade, the 'evade, the baikrtadeand others all had their special purpose. But gum powder made ibeis obsolete asweapons, asd horses are ao longer asedas battle machines.

The "airs" have been kept alive, however, by a few dedicated men.

A Grain Ofby

Sea Saltbetzi aforam

r— Reel Eel Tips by Skip Purdy

They say that the two happiesttimes in a man's life is when he buys hisfirst boat and when he gets rid of it. Butthat is not true. I'll go along with thefirst part, but now that I've decided tosell my beautiful little 24" Venture, NoSweat, I can tell you I have a sad, sadfeeling.

Poor little No Sweat - Iin reallyonly letting her go for her own sakebecause she has sat at the dock for thelast year and only been out once, andthat is no life at all for a slim, jauntyyoung sailboat with five sails, a coat ofnew bottom paint and a spinnaker she'snever even used yet. She's a love of aboat, with an endearing way of rompingthrough the waves like a playful cork, orof buckling down at serious moments, asin a CMCS race, like a thoroughbred

• horse in the Kentucky Derby. And there she sits, without even

an exercise boy to sail her up and downthe back bay once a week, even thoughshe's rattling her stays in eagerness totake off for the Keys, or snoop aroundthe inlets up by Cayo Costa. You cin betyour bottom dollar, however, I'm onlygoing to let her go to some one who lovessailing with a passion and who will treather with respect and affection.

I'm going to miss her freshlypainted little cabin where we've snoozedso comfortably on her foam cushions, ordrunk many a companionable cup ofcoffee at the little drop table. And Iguess I'll leave aboard the brand-newunopened Coleman stove we bought tofit her galley with the little portablesink, the ice cooler and two lonelypot-holders --- because it would seemlike Indian-giving to take it away fromher.

Ill not be able to boast that I havewall-'to-wall, carpeting anymore either, because I don't have it in my house. Ionly had it in her cabin. However, she'snot one to put on airs about that luxurysince she's lost her pretty stripedcurtains even though they can easily bereplaced and she still has the neatwooden curtain holder with slidingfasteners, not to mention all kinds ofhooks and cabin lights and two verysexy, see-through hammocks for holding ,things.

Of .curse, she has cushionsgalore, a compass, a gas tank and a great

'9V: hp Evinrude outboard motor and aboat hook - not to mention a built in headand ONE velcro screen for the hatchcover. It's in no way her fault that Inever finished the one for thecoiripanionway, but it shouldn't takelong for someone who's better withepoxy glue than I am.

Actually, the more I describe herthe worse I feel. It's like sending yourson to the Army or marrying off adaughter. I've scrubbed, and painted.

arid sewed and spent SO much money foranchors and chains and wind vanes forthe top of the mast, and bumpers (whichI think we lost overboard or lentsomeone) and rust remover for thewinch to raise and lower the swing keel(it worked like a charm, too), and fornylon lines to anchor the canvas awningthat shades the deck and for fiberglass tocoat her woodwork.

If you consider the cost on anannual basis, I'll bet I've spent more onNo Sweat than oh any one of my childrenunder the age of 10 and worked just ashard as when they were babies. But Idon't begrudge it. It was a labor of loveand if nothing else, the dreams I had!

The magical plans I made, thecharts I pored over, the courses I took inseamanship and navigation, the books Iread, the skills I learned, all so that sheand I could take off on some fantasticadventure! Alas, I am more earthboundthan I knew - at least right now. But sheis humming and rocking on the waves, waiting for someone to come along andset sail with her. They need not beperfect, nor highly experienced sailors;she's too easy-going for that. But she'srestless to be off, to elude the dull

^barnacles and the back-wash of theharbor, to tip her decks between sea andsky in a salute to living right now.

I can't say her nay.

With these past holiday weeks Ihave made a lot of new and wonderfulfriends while listening to their excitingtales of fishing.

A happy Sanibel resident, EdScott, told me of his beautiful 10 poundredfish and a 4 pound sheepshead caughtwhile bottom fishing off a private dock inSan Carlos Bay. He expects to see manysheepshead with cooler weather and islooking forward to catch some morereds.

Roman and Charlotte Stave fromSt. Louis Park, Minnesota, said they hada wonderful time trout fishing withCapt. Herb Purdy on the Blue Runner. They took along their two children whogot the biggest thrill out of seeing ablowfish blow up when Capt. Purdyrubbed its stomach.

Staying at the Reef Motel, Mr.Ganz, from New Jersey, tells me he andhis wife have been fishing around theSanibel Causeway with much success. He says a day doesn't go by when theydon't catch some fish. They are hookinginto nice size trout, whiting andsheepshead. Whiting are a grayish-silver fish with a white belly and haswhat looks like a whisker on the bottomof its chin. These fish are very oftencaught surf fishing off the Gulf sidebeaches.

I am hearing from some Islanders

and visitors a*, well, that redfish andtrout are being caught in the grass flatsoff the Sanibel Causeway. You'llrecognize a redfish by its reddish colorand the large black spot found at thebase of its tail. Redfish is mainly abottom feeder and are being caught nowwith live 'educated' shrimp. This fish is aslow striker so take enough time to allowhim to catch hold of your bait. Use aslight delay before setting the hook. They never jump so expect the fish tohead for the bottom with a steady fight.Redfish are very good eating andexcellent for chowder.

Our very young tourist friendscome in The Real Eel telling me of thegrand times catching some of our smallerfish. To a child hooking into a spade fishor even a catfish makes his day a dreamcome true. The spade fish is oval inshape with a white body and wtdevertical black bands. Many visitorsdescribe it as looking like an angelfish. Itstrikes fast, loves shrimp and is fair foreat ing. The catfish has an elongateddorsal fin thrusting upward from thefront part of the spine. The coloring isblue-grayishg shading off to a light belly. Some say the catfish is not edibile but itis an acceptable table fish.

Come see me at The Real Eel andtell me what you've been catching. Lotsof luck to all you fishermen.

A SMART BIRDby Vivian Hinternhoff

Charlie, the spirited Mynah bird, who converses with passers-by at theAccent Shop on Periwinkle Place isreally clever! Last week, a group ofteenagers were standing in front of his

.cage and one of them said, "Oh Charlie, Ilove you."

Whereupon Charlie opened hisbeak widely and yelled. "Help! Help!"And this is a true storv. I heard him.
