How to write a good CV – step by step

If you are a foreign student and you want to get an internship, a student job or work in Denmark

after graduation, it is important that you learn how to write a good CV. The competition on the job

market is high, and you need to stand out in order to get a job interview.

The classic chronological CV

When you start writing a chronological CV, you start listing your competences in a reverse

chronological order. You put the newest up front because your future employer is most interested

in those. Keep in mind that the CV should be interesting to read in order to catch the employer’s

attention. Therefore, it is a good idea to mention the experiences, both academic and personal,

you have gained at each place you have been – for example:

My master’s degree in Denmark gave me competences in the field of economics, and insight in

Danish work culture from having written various projects in corporations with Danish companies.

In group work I often take the role of being the analyst as well as being thorough and ambitious.

General tips:

Call the firm regarding questions to the job advert, what are their priorities.

A CV faces backward (an application faces forward).

A CV can be between 2-3 pages. Usually a student does not have much work experience to

fill up the space.

  Put a letterhead in CV.

Personalize a CV to the specific job. Some only read the CV!

  Use bullet points

Read your CV afterwards with the eyes of an employer  – is the information relevant to

them, do they understand everything if they don’t have the same academic background?

Your CV can be 2-3 pages  – think of a nice layout, maybe nice background, colors etc.

However, the layout should not take all the focus.

Don’t exaggerate; be believable in your description.

  Check your spelling and grammar.

How to write a good CV – step by step

Explanation of the following example

1.

Make an interesting headline that catches the employer’s attention.

2.  In the resume describe short and precise your competences, what you have worked with  –

both education and work experience. Think relevance in terms of the job advert. The

resume has to be personal and describe you as a person.

3.  Education

-  If you have a good average, it is a good idea to list it.

-  Describe your general competences, your role in project writing, elaborate the most

relevant projects and courses. Start with the latest education.-  If you have an articles published, it is also a good idea to list them here.

-  Also a good idea to put reference in where it might be relevant. Only put a reference

down, if you feel that the person knows your qualifications and will put in a good word

for you. Also be sure that your reference speak or write English if they are contacted by

the employer.

4.  Study or work abroad is always good to mention – it shows that you are independent and

outgoing. Write what you have learned from being abroad.

5.  Some  jobs are more relevant than other; however, in most jobs it is possible to highlight

some aspects that is relevant for your future employer, such as responsible, structured,

managing skills etc. Describe your job, what have you learned – not only the titles.

6.  Describe volunteer work, what have you learned and why it is important for you.

7.  List your language competences and level.

8.  List your computer skills and levels. If you only have basic skills, list them anyway  – it will

be easier for you to use that program if you have some knowledge.

9.  The employer wants to know what you do in your spare time  – they not only hire a

qualified academic person but also a person who is so much more!
