he sun is shining and the temperature is rising and we welcome both of these changes with open arms and hope for

many more days of this. As you know, if you were able to attend our Flag

Raising Ceremony it was a fine evening highlighted by four of our new members raising the flags and Tom Robinson playing “To the Colors” on his historic reconstructed Civil War bugle.

Congrats go to our volunteer Work Day crews who all worked hard to beautify all areas of the Club inside and out. Check the Vice Commodore’s article for more info about the day since he was the “leader of the pack” and coordinated the work. I would like you to take notice of the improvement of our burgee display in the bar area. Be sure to thank Gil Paradies who stepped up and volunteered to improve the area. Good job Gil!

It did not work out the first year and the following year the date was already booked for another event but Doug persevered and this year we grabbed the date and scheduled it. Then began the television and antenna placements and try-outs, and more placements and more try-outs which

ummer is finally here, our flags have been raised and the pool has been opened.

The Summer Water Aerobics will begin this year on June 20th. Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 11:00am, with Friday as a weather make-up day. The fee is $25.00. The classes are already booked solid. If you did not register in time, you can ask Cindy Butterworth to put you on the waiting list. She is trying to find another aerobic instructor so that she can have additional classes. If you know an aerobics instructor who may be interested, please let Cindy know at [email protected].

Work has begun to repair the finger piers and pilings that were damaged in the big windstorm. Pedestals to replace the electric on C Dock are on order and we expect them to arrive soon. Also, look for the new kayak racks.

Right now we are experiencing some kitchen issues that we are working on. The large freezer/ice box is not working and possibly needs a new motor or compressor. This has caused some electrical problems, which are also being addressed. Our facility and equipment are aging and invariably there is always something that needs to be fixed!

I want to thank the following volunteers for their services:

• Gil Paradies for making flag poles to display the flags that were strung on the wall to match the ones over the bar.

• Ted Kranz, Henry Krage, Don Connolly, and Ken Lee for refurbishing the top of the bar; it was sanded, cleaned, and re-varnished.

• Betty Kranz corrected the emergency contact number on the front door.

• Chuck Dawson made a screen door for the kitchen entrance, made benches for the pool area, repaired the pool gates, and designed the suggestion box which sits on the left of the entranceway.

• Henry Krage repaired the irrigation system. • Lisa Krose-Krage repotted the various

flowerpots around the club and heads the volunteers of the garden club. She will be looking for volunteers to help with the maintenance of the grounds during the year.

These wonderful volunteers are who make our club so successful. Thank you!

The Shipmates Table continues to be a success. Martha and I always enjoy sitting with different members when we host. All the events of May were a resounding success.

Have a wonderful June. Enjoy the summer weather.

s we enter the month of June, 2018, here’s hoping we can continue the momentum we

enjoyed in May. Perhaps the highlight of May was our

first annual Derby Day which turned out to be an absolute blast. Many thanks to the members and staff who worked so hard to make this event a reality and a special thanks to all those who participated in the event. The hat contest was one of the highlights of the evening.

Beginning in June, we will ramp up the activities at our club on Saturdays. Lunches will be served every Saturday from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. So come by the club, take a dip in the pool and stay for lunch. Or just come on by and have lunch while enjoying the great atmosphere offered by our club.

Saturday evenings will also provide our members with an opportunity to take advantage of their club membership. We will be having different types of meals and activities each Saturday of the month:

• June 2 – features Dinners from the Grill• June 9 – an elegant Candle Light Dinner• June 16 – fun with Saturday Trivia• June 23 – more Dinners from the Grill• June 30 – another Candle Light Dinner Dinners from the Grill will be a more

informal meal with the main courses cooked on the grill. The Candle Light Dinners will be a more formal dinner ordered off a menu with full table service. Saturday Trivia is intended to offer our members, including those not able to attend our monthly Thursday Trivia, a chance to test their knowledge skills. For further information on each of these events keep an eye out for weekly e-minders that will provide menus and additional details.

Derby Day Debut —In the first, of what many hope to be an annual event, the packed house turned out in timely Derby attire, to view the race, root for their favorite horse, and sip their mint juleps. All had

a grand time, as the “Hat Ladies” (above) attest. Even Commodore Reno couldn’t resist donning a Derby Day chapeau.

oating season is in full swing. Many club members are getting their boats in the water and seem

to be ready to have some summer fun. Sixteen members recently completed the

“Suddenly in Command” USCG class at the club on May 12. Ron Payne volunteered to show how quickly inflatable life vests expand

and his wife, Wendy was lucky to ignite and handle a flare on the dock. Our next class will be a CPR class in July. If you see auxiliary members, please give

them a big thank you for conducting classes at the club.

The first cruise of the year was the Shakedown Cruise, planned for the weekend of May 18–20. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate, so, following the pre-cruise dinner at the Shipmates’ Table Friday evening, cruise leader Ron Payne was forced to cancel the planned sail to the Severn River off Mobjack Bay the next day.

Our second cruise is the Norfolk Harbor- fest cruise (Tall Ships festival) on June 7, 8, 9 and 10. We have 8 boats signed up for this cruise. Godwin Jones is the cruise leader for this event. Club boats will escort one of the

tall ships and raft up at the event for the weekend. Our club has one of the largest fleets.

The third cruise is the “Summer Solstice” cruise June 15-24. The cruise will take boats south to Elizabeth City through the ICW (in a loop). Jim Coling is the cruise leader. Jim will provide details concerning the event soon.

My wife, Betty is starting up a series of Kayaking activities for the club. She reports that she is getting a lot of interest and support. The initial event is targeted for Saturday June 2 in Stutts

Creek. Please let her know, [email protected], if you are interested, and want to participate.

Finally, please welcome a new member, Nathan Beck and his family with their classic sailboat, Millie Joe, a 1961, 36' Alden Zephyr, now berthed at the B dock, slip 35.

Hopeful Cruisers at the Shipmates Table — Hopeful, that is, the weather would break and the Shakedown Cruise could go forward, the cruisers

enjoyed dinner at the Shipmates Table Friday evening. Alas the rains continued to threaten and the cruise was abandoned. But, hey, good food with good friends — what’s not to like?
