president of SOT (2008-2009) and has
a long history of service to the SOT
and the HOT.
HOT Mentoring Breakfast “A Path to
Success: Opportunities and
Challenges to Face in Your Career
Development” Wednesday 6:45-8
am. This event will provide strategies
to help the trainees of
underrepresented backgrounds on
how to obtain a desired fellowship,
succeed in the new position, and move
up in the professional trajectory. The
registration for this event is closed, but
if you want to be on waiting list send

7 HOT News
HOT would like to congratulate Betina Lew, PhD, HOT Past President (2011-2013) and
Councilor (2009-2011), for the significant accomplishment to be recently elected for the
Presidential Chain (2016-2020) of Women in Toxicology (WIT) and Councilor (2016-2018) of
the Risk Assessment Specialty Session (RASS), of the Society of Toxicology.
This is a great achievement for one of our HOT members and defines well how the involvement
in HOT board can contribute to successful leadership positions.
The Sociedad Mexicana de Toxicología (SOMTOX) in combination with IUTOX, is holding the XIV
International Congress of Toxicology in October 2016. This is the first time that an International
Congress of Toxicology will be held in México and in Latin America, so what a better way to celebrate
such event that having it in the beautiful city of Mérida, Yucatán, the gateway to the Mayan World. The
Congress will be a “green” event with the theme: “Toxicology and Global Sustainability”.

8 HOT Professional Tip
Tips to Get the Most Out of a Scientific Meeting
Welcome to the 55th SOT Annual Meeting! Scientific meetings give us the opportunity to meet people in our
field, get ideas for our projects, find collaborators or meet potential employers. Here you are tips to maximize
your experience on this or next events.
Before the meeting
Plan your Schedule
Depending on your career goals check the meeting’s
program for the talks, posters sessions or exhibitions
that interest you.
Write a list of speakers you want to meet
Learn as much as you can about them by researching
on the web, reading papers or LinkedIn. Ask your boss
for advice to identify people of interest.
Make sure you have a plenty of business cards
Your business card should have a simple design with
3.5”x2” dimensions. Be careful when using cards with
unconventional shapes, most of people have standard
business card holders. You should include on your
card your name, latest title, company logo, address,
phone number and e-mail.
Prepare an elevator speech
Plan your introduction. Prepare a 30s, 2 min or 10 min
speech for different audiences. You should mention
who you are, what do you do, what your research
interests are, what your career interests are.
During the meeting Build your network
Keep your badge visible so the people can learn your
name. Introduce yourself via your elevator speech. If
you are in a large group, ask to exchange business
cards. Sit with someone you do not know during
communal meals.
Do not be distracted, keep networking
The ToxExpo offers nice pens, cute cuddly monkeys,
T-shirts or bags, but do not lose focus. Invest that time
in making connections.
Take part of discussions in talks
Concentrate at least 80% of the speech’s time, if you
have scenic fright and you are likely to forget questions
in front of the microphone, write your questions before.
Always take notes
During the talks/posters, write down scientific
information you find interesting such as
background, exciting data or techniques that
may be useful for your projects. On a separate
place, write the names of people you meet and
their stories. This will be very helpful for
following up. Etiquette
Be respectful, do not interrupt an ongoing
conversation or ask questions/discuss before
the end of the talks. Do not criticize others work
even if you are in contradiction.
After the meeting
Follow up
Keep in touch with the people you met by
sending an email, use your notes to highlight a
point you enjoyed or found interesting during
the meeting. Connect with people using
LinkedIn or ResearchGate. If you promised to
send a document, send it.

HOT Sister Organizations
If your Hispanic Organization is planning a Toxicology meeting or if you are organizing a
Toxicology event intended for a primarily Hispanic audience and want to promote it, send an
email to Marcelo Wolansky (Councilor for Sister Organizations) at [email protected]
for more information for its inclusion in upcoming Toxenlaces issues.
2015-2016 HOT Sponsors and HOT Sister Organizations
Toxenlaces is the newsletter that informs Hispanic toxicologists in the United States and
the international Spanish and Portuguese-speaking scientific communities about important
toxicological events and issues occurring in our countries. It is electronically published and
distributed to our membership and Sister Organizations in Ibero-America. Toxenlaces
disseminates critical dates for events, health perspectives, and funding and training opportunities.
It serves as a toxicology forum for our members and other partner organizations, engages in
educational outreach to the Hispanic communities and provides the essential elements to support
networking among Hispanic toxicologists. Toxenlaces is open to receive collaborations from HOT
and SOT members, and Sister Organizations. You can collaborate with short scientific articles,
news or notes related with toxicology. Other ways to collaborate is by nominate your peers or
yourself for the sections Trainee Section and When I Grow Up. For more information about
collaborating with Toxenlaces send an email to Aline de Conti (Toxenlaces Editor) at
Follow us on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/hispanicorganizationoftoxicologists
Don’t forget to visit also the SOT Facebook page:

HOT wants you to be part of the organization! To make it available to everyone, HOT accepts
applications from non-SOT members to become HOT members. Yes, that is right!! You only
have to have the desire to collaborate with and be part of our great organization.
Your HOT membership provides you with valuable resources throughout your scientific career as
for networking through the largest Hispanic toxicologist community, giving you opportunity for
Travel Awards or serving as a mentor to the young Hispanic toxicologists; besides you receive
the Toxenlaces newsletter every two months.
Application and more information can be found at Non-SOT Member Application.
